30-Jul-07:
Corren Captures Levin Crown
Donna Wilson reports from Levin |
Australian
Mike Corren, ranked at #84 in the world, continued his
domination of the New Zealand Closed Satellite PSA tournaments, when
he defeated SquashGYM Palmerston North’s Josh Greenfield in
the 2007 Levin Squash Club PSA Open, over the weekend.
Although the Men’s Open final was won in three games, they were all
very tight matches, with both players producing some fantastic
shots. Playing to a packed gallery, Greenfield retrieved
relentlessly, but Corren’s domination and wide array of shots
finally took their toll on Greenfield, giving Mike the 2007 Levin
Open CS PSA title, and top ranking points for the PSA Closed
Satellite tournament.
Wellington’s Shane Johnston and Central’s Reece Williams fought out
the 3rd and 4th playoff, with Johnston finally winning in 5 very
long games. Palmerston North’s Tim Preston, Joseph Watts and Matt
Pickering won the Special, Plate and Consolation Plates
respectively.
In the women’s Open, Central's representative Alison Wilson defeated
Squash Palmerston North's Danielle Fourie in 3 sets, with Levin’s
Donna Wilson, Foxton’s Mihi Williams, and Rangitikei’s Di Tasker
taking out the Special, Plate and Consolation Plates.
Tournament Director Donna Wilson said the 2007 Levin Squash Open,
sponsored by RJ’s Licorice, Levin Cobb n Co, and Steinlager Pure,
was a fantastic event, with the Committee of Marilyn Dolan, Russell
Bacon, Brian Anderson, Graham Bennie, Barry Watkins, Greg Spicer,
Bev Evans and Murray and Lesley Forward doing a great job in
ensuring the tournament ran without a hitch.
Levin Squash Club would like to thank all those people who came down
to support and watch the fantastic matches throughout the weekend,
anyone interested in joining the club is welcome to phone the
Secretary, Marilyn Dolan, on 06 3687517 for details.
