Lincou's Connecticut Challenge
29-Jan-08, New Canaan

Kumail tests Thierry in Canaan
Lamont Preston reports

The match between Thierry Lincou former world champion and Kumail Mehmood, former touring professional, was a fast pace encounter both both players using a lot of front court for drops and deception.

Thierry, tired from the match he played the night before with David Palmer, started slow with some errors in the first game giving Kumail a big lead in the beginning and Kumail finished the game 11- 7.

Thierry came out strong in the second game moving kumail at fast pace taking the ball early and keeping his opponent on the move the whole game and finishing the rallies with deception in the front and winning the game 5 -11.

Thierry took an early lead in the third game but Kumail equalled the lead with some fine counterdrops and eventually winning 12-10. Fourth game Kumail looked exhausted and Thierry started to move even better as the match went longer, and the Frenchman won the fourth 11-2.

Fifth game was a seesaw battle - hard hitting and both players engaging in long rallies. Kumail had three match balls but could not finish it and eventually Thierry won 16-14 in the fifth.

Fun for all ...

12 kids were chosen to get on court with the former world champion which they enjoyed immensely.

Also, before the exhibition, two teams which were all junior players battled it out with team A winning 4 -3 against team B.

There were 150 people who enjoyed the evening and everybody including me had an awesome time watching two great squash players show their skills.
