LINDA ELRIANI: THE LAST MATCH
Part Two: Friends & Family      Part One, Q&A

In part one we heard about Linda's plans for the future, and looked at her 16 years on the WISPA tour. Today, in part two, we hear from the friends and family that have supported her, and will miss her, as she sets out on a new career ...

Fiona Geaves

Linda, my brilliant friend! Good luck in your new job over here in New York, I am the lucky one as my best friend will be joining me over here, something I never dreamt, and how it put a huge smile on my face when I heard the news you and Laurent had accepted the Greenwich job.

What a fantastic career you have had. I was so proud to be there for you at many events giving advice in between games and seeing you succeed. There have been many, but to just name a couple that made me feel so proud of you are:

Becoming 2005 National Champion at last......how you deserved that, I knew it would happen one day and I was so pleased to have still been around to see you win it and coach you through it.

Making the final of the TOC with some of the best squash I have ever seen you play, how that lob worked like a dream that week, you really did play such intelligent squash.

You made coaching SO easy, I would tell you what to do and you went and did it, but even if things didn't go quite as planned I knew you would give it your all, which reminds me of that match in Qatar when you were coming back from injury and you had that gruelling match with Natalie Grinham, now I don't think I have seen you that exhausted, but did you stop running, hell no, you showed such guts.

Thanks so much for all your support too, you helped me through some tough battles too, you made me believe I could win certain matches, which reminds me of one in particular, Las Vegas beating our friend Cassie.

I know I was VERY frustrating to coach, because unlike you, I either did exactly what you said which meant in general I won or played well or I wavered and ''Faffed'' about with my short game. You have said so many times to me that you wanted to scream at me on court when I was having my affair with the front of the court, sorry for all those times mate.

Of course my all time favourite is winning a Bronze Medal with you in Manchester in the Commonwealth Games, winning that match against Liz Irving and Sarah Fitz-Gerald to get through to a medal position, we won and you cried! You were an awesome partner my friend.

What a superb team mate you have been, representing England and having you there always made it so very special. Of course I would have loved for us to have one our last World Teams together, we were so close. England have been SO LUCKY to have had such a tremendous and loyal player.

I was so disappointed to see you were not selected for the recent European Team Champs final. Someone who has given so much to her countries sport really did deserve a better send off. You will be missed for sure, what a solid player to have in your team.

So, all the best in your new adventure out here in the States, you will be fantastic and the kids will love you. I look forward to our kids doing battle!

Lots of love

Cassie Jackman

Well the WISPA Tour will be a duller place without Linda.

Linda has been one of England's top players for many years and has had a great career which she should be very proud of. She has given so much to the sport through her time on the WISPA board and her fantastic enthusiasm for the game. She is a true professional and is a great example for any aspiring youngster.

I have been privileged to have known Linda for over 20 years and feel very lucky to have her as one of my closest friends. I have some fantastic memories of us representing England and travelling the world together which always make me smile. She definitely made my career extremely enjoyable.

Linda will be sorely missed by all the WISPA players but I'm sure they and everyone involved with the game will want to wish her nothing but the best for her new life in America with Laurent. I'm sure she will be a great success and they are very lucky to have her.

So good luck mate and thanks for the memories.

love

Tania Bailey

Linda has been a great player for the whole time I have been on the circuit but also she has been a really good friend for the last 7 years. She is a true professional, she always gave 110% in every match and she worked really hard in her training, it was always all or nothing, if she was going to do something she always had to do it right.

I learnt a lot from Linda when I first started on the circuit, she was always willing to chat to the new girls. I really enjoyed playing for England with Linda too, she was a great team player.

Off court, Linda was always really good fun, she was always making everyone laugh, whenever we had a night out it was loads of fun, Linda loved to talk too, you could usually hear her coming a mile off!

The hardest match of my career was against Linda, I will never forget it, it was in Carol Weymuller in Brooklyn, it was 1hr 35 mins and Lind won 10/9 in the fifth, I have never felt so drained after a match, we could hardly lift our arms up to wash our hair after!

I will really miss her and I hope she has a great time in Greenwich and I hope she has as much success in her coaching as she did in her playing career, she deserves it.

LINDA, A SPECIAL SPARKLE...

The first time I saw that lady, she was kissing a gorgeous Frenchman. We were in a Surrey League match, in Wimbledon Lakeside. She had funny hair, she was sexy, and funny. And she was obviously tantalising a Frenchman.

Envious? Oh yes I was...

A few months later, I met her again in Rennes, and I liked her straight away. Her frankness, her "here I am if you don't like it tough" personality, her constant "blah blah blah blah", her laugh, her great sense of humour went straight to my French heart.

Her passion of the game seduced me. Her personality touched me. I love her on court. I loved her off court. And yes, there are other players on the tour I get on extremely well with. Of course. But Linda is special to me, somebody with whom you can speak freely, no holds barred. She is part of those people that make this game a special world to be in, a world that we all feel privileged to be a part of.

Linda, I am so going to miss you, woman. I cannot believe that I will not have breakfast with you anymore on the tour, that I won't get to tell you to "give it a rest" when you keep on chatting away with the whole fricking world, and that I will not hear your contagious laugh !

Heck, I'm thinking of moving to America myself.....

Mrs Elriani, I love you, and I will miss you a hell of a lot.

Your compatriot

Naomi Duthie

Now comes the end of an era! It's time to say goodbye to the lovely Sussex Lady. First Cassie's career got cut short with her injury and then came Fi with her move to America and now the world of squash says goodbye to Linda Elriani the last of the trio who were together for a lot of their squash career.

As I watched Linda play in the PSL semi final match against Tania (Sorry Tania but I was rooting for Linda on this one) I felt I was watching the end of a great career and an end of an era. What can you say, I think 9 years in the top 10 speaks for itself, any good squash player would only dream of a career like that.

It is a sad day for me to see it all official as we come to say goodbye to a brilliant and happy couple in the squash playing world, but at the same time a happy one as they embark on a new chapter of their life.

Linda has served her country throughout her career and what an asset she has been but the thing I really like is that she has never forgotten her roots down here in Sussex always looking to play not only for her country but also for her county.

Squash in England will definitely miss this fantastic Sussex Lady and her bubbly character who always has the time to say Hi as she passes by and have a quick chat, along with her husband Laurent.

I first managed to get on court with Linda a few years ago when I came to Sussex to do my Degree but soon got injured! As I saw her at the club doing a sports relief play the pro event when I was on crutches I thought I have got to get on court with this fantastic bubbly friendly person.

Although I have only had a few years they have been a brilliant few years, with a lot of aching days! But there was always a smiling face at the end, yes I think I may be insane. USA is now a long way to go for a session but hopefully I will get to America for a session someday soon and I will come and gate crash the club! it's a lot longer trip compared to the small trip to David Lloyd so I will have to get saving.

I just want to say a big thank you to Lindy and Laurent for all their help with my squash and also the support they have given the David Lloyd Club (Eastbourne), maybe when I come to America I may even be injury free, ahhh ok maybe not! All the best with this new chapter of your life.

All the best,

Family

Lindy -What a great and successful career you have
had! With nearly 100 caps playing for England at junior and senior level, Chairperson for WISPA, how proud you have made the whole family.

Well done xxx

Lindy and Laurent - Good luck in America. We hope you will both be very happy in you new venture together

(I know they will love you both).

Best Love Always,
