Losone Swiss Classic 2007
24 - 29 April, Switzerland, $11k
29-April, Final:
Galvez gets Champion Alarcon in Losone final

Mexico's Eric Galvez justified his seeding in the Losone Swiss Squash Classic when he defeated Brazil's defending champion Rafael Alarcon in the final at the Squash Center in Losone, Switzerland.

The 23-year-old top seed from Puebla recovered from the effects of a marathon 92-minute encounter with US National Champion Julian Illingworth in the previous round to fight back from a game down to beat Alarcon, seeded two, in 66 minutes.

It was the fourth straight PSA Tour win by Galvez over his Pan American rival - and a victory which brought the world No36 his first Tour win of the year, but the sixth of his career.

29-Apr, Final:
Eric Galvez bt Rafael Alarcon
     4/11, 11/7, 11/5, 11/6 (66m)

28-April,Semis:
Top two in Losone final
John Williams & Daniele Bricchi report

In the semis of the Losone Open top seed Eric Galvez held off some tough resistance from his American opponent Julian Illingworth to win a tough 92 minute battle in five games. The Mexican was pushed to the limit by the ever-improving Illingworth, just showing a little more experience on the big points.

In the other semi final Rafael Alarcon easily defeated Scott Handley of England 3-0. Handley, clearly troubled by a groin injury was unable to sustain the kind of pressure necessary for him to stay in the match.

Both players who have made the final now will receive a watch, sponsored by the company George J. Von Burg for their efforts. In a fantastic gesture from the company, they decided to add another watch to the one that was that was already on offer for the winner of the event.

27-April, Quarters:
American progress in Losone

John Williams & Daniele Bricchi report

First match of the day produced a very tight battle between Julian Illingworth & Patrick Gaessler. After a tight battle all the way, it was Gaessler who had the upper hand all the way through the fifth, but Illingworth hung in and recovered from 8-10 down to record a morale boosting victory.

Next on court saw Scott Handley pitted against Badr Aziz. Handley proved to be too much for the Swede, using his wrist cleverly to twist & turn his bigger opponent and go thru to the semis with a four game win.

The next match saw South American Rafael Alarcon on court against 94th ranked Tony James. Although James was able to pressure his higher ranked opponent in the first two games with some quick volleying around the middle, Alarcon maintained his solid defence and ran out a comfortable winner in 4 games.

Last on court saw top seed Eric Galvez up against young gun Nicolas Mueller from Switzerland. Mueller managed to stay with the top seed for 2 and a half games, but then the Mexican's high-tempo game started to tell physically on his younger opponent as he went on to win clearly in 4 games.

26-April, Round One:
Top Two safely through in Losone

John Williams & Daniele Bricchi report

The top two seeds progressed without any hiccups today with No.1 seed Eric Galvez beating Yann Perrin 3-0 and his South American compatriot no.2 seeded Rafael Alarcon, also winning 3-0 against Friedrich Scheel.

Galvez will meet recently crowned European Junior Champion Nicolas Mueller of Switzerland, who disposed of his much higher ranked opponent, Luca Mastrostefano in 4 games. Mueller, only 17 years of age and with little experience at PSA events, is showing that he can mix it with players at this level already.

Alarcon will meet World No.94 Tony James of Australia who overcame the odds to beat Julien Balbo of France in 5 games. Balbo seemed to have regained the ascendancy after fighting his way back from 0-2 to two games all, but it was James who showed poise and maturity to record one of his best PSA wins to date.

Another 'surprise' winner was German qualifier Patrick Gässler. With Gässler Leading 10/4, his opponent, World no.41 Ritwik Bhattacharya of India, was forced to retire due to a knee injury. Gässler will meet Julian Illingworth of the United States who overcame qualifier Arthur Gaskin in four hard fought games.

Tomorrow's remaining quarter final match-up will see Scott Handley & Badr Abdel Aziz do battle. Handley beat Matheiu Castagnet comfortably in four games whereas Aziz had to work a bit harder to get past his opponent-Dave Barnett, also in four games...

2006 Tournament

25-April, Qualifying Finals:
Qualifying complete in Losone

John Williams & Daniele Bricchi report

In today's last round qualifying in Losone, Friedrich Scheel of Germany produced the biggest upset of the day fighting his way back against Mohammed Elkeiy of Egypt from two games to one down to win.

Dave Barnett
looked solid in his match against Ryan Thompson of Namibia despite dropping the second game to win in four.

German National Team members Patrick Gässler and Andre Haschker fought it out together with Gässler proving too strong and comfortably winning in straight games, stretching his winning run against Haschker to five matches in recent meetings, PSA and otherwise.

In the last match between Arthur Gaskin and Stuart Crawford, Gaskin of Ireland saw his two love lead whittled back to two all. At 9-9 all in the decider Gaskin played a backhand crosscourt volley-nick off Crawford's serve and followed it up with a fine backhand drop winner to book his place in tomorrow's first round...

24-April, Qualifying Round One:
Swiss clubmates
fall short in Losone

John Williams & Daniele Bricchi report

The first qualifying round is complete in Losone with no major surprises. Top two seeds Dave Barnett & Arthur Gaskin had byes today and in the second round of qualifying will meet Ryan Thompson and Stuart Crawford respectively.

Thompson eased past Swiss youngster Reiko Peter 3-0, Crawford  disposing of another Swiss youngster- 14 year old Nicola Schueler- also in straight games. German National Team members Andre Haschker & Patrick Gaessler will meet tomorrow after contrasting scorelines, Gaessler defeating Joan Lezaud 3-0, with Haschker narrowly escaping in the fifth against Philip Nightingale.

The remaining two matches today saw Friedrich Scheel & Mohammed Elkeiy go thru to meet each tomorrow in the second round, Scheel beating another Swiss Junior- 15 year old Lukas Burkhardt 3-0 & Elkeiy edging past Beni Fischer in 4 games.

Interestingly, all four Swiss players in today's qualifying come from the same club in Luzern, Switzerland- all coached by Pascal Bruhin- a credit to his coaching efforts in the area of junior development over the last 5-6 years.
