27-Nov, Round One:
Qualifiers excel in Macau
After an absence of six years the Macau
Open returns to the men's circuit with a $52k prize fund and a
strong entry, headed by world numbers two and three Karim Darwish
and Gregory Gaultier.
The first round saw two qualifiers make it into the quarter-finals -
Pakistan's Aamir Atlas Khan overcame fifth seed Azlan
Iskandar in five games while Julien Balbo shocked six seed
Olli Tuominen to set up an all-French quarter-final with Thierry
Lincou.
Unseeded Chris Ryder also created an upset, beating seventh
seed Cameron Pilley in five games to set up a meeting with second
seed Darwish.
In the women's event England's Lauren Selby continued her
rich vein of form, coming through qualifying to beat seventh seed
Elise Ng in the first round. |
"I
was really pleased with how I played considering the past two weeks
I've had. It's probably been my hardest two weeks ever on tour,
being so ill so far from home. I'm obviously not pleased to lose,
but good to be healthy again and on the right track for Saudi ...
"Three
Frenchies in the quarters....
"I was happy with the way I got out of a tricky encounter against
Renan, my sparring partner from way back when.
"Tomorrow, I'm playing Julien, who doesn't stop surprising us ..."
