26-Jul-08:
Mak's Olympic Baton handover
Immediately after the Sichuan earthquake occurred on 12 May, Christina Mak, a Beijing Olympic Torch Relay Runner in Hong Kong and the bronze medalist in women’s squash event of the 2006 Doha Asian Games, generously offered her Torch and uniform for public auction.

With the thoughtful advice by her coach, Tony Choi, the auction was made through the most popular local radio channel, Commercial Radio 881, to help raise funds in support of the quake victims.

Within a few days numerous bids were placed by the public and Mr. Lam Tai Fai, a reputable businessman, placed the highest bid of 1.8 million Hong Kong dollars who subsequently returned the Torch to Christina in appreciation of her selfless generosity and kindness.

In view of the significance of the Torch, Christina decided to give it to Hong Kong Squash to thank the Association for nurturing her in her squash career.

With the consent of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government, Hong Kong Squash has chosen to display the Torch at the Hong Kong Squash Centre for public appreciation and most importantly to encourage the future elite squash athletes to carry on the Olympic spirit.

Today, Mr. David Mui, Chairman of Hong Kong Squash received the Torch from Christina with the presence of Mr. Thomas Chow, Director of Leisure & Cultural Services, Mr. Tony Choi and many other guests and friends from the media.

HK Duo carry Olympic Torch

Both Rebecca Chiu and Christina Mak, among thirty five other Hong Kong athletes, carried the Olympic Torch in the Torch Relay in Hong Kong today.

"It was such a great honour for Hong Kong Squash to have two representatives participating in this historic moment", said the Hong Kong Squash Chairman David Mui.

Hong Kong Squash wishes a very successful Beijing Olympics and hope that Squash would be included in the 2016 Olympic Games.

"Though squash is not in Olympics yet, I had strong feelings of being a member of the Olympic family when I held the torch in my hands, running through the cheering crowd."
