16-Sep:
Players arrive in Toluca

This morning the players arrived to the City of Toluca in México for the Abierto Mexicano de Raquetas, which starts tomorrow with the qualifiers at 2 o´clock.

The games will take place in the Sport Center Zinancantepec and in the afternoon in downtown square “La Alameda” where the Cristal Court is install and ready to go.

Qualifying Draws

Welcome to Toluca, Mexico from Arthur Curran.

After a long flight on Saturday I arrived in Mexico City at Squash Delta just in time to see Mohammed El Shorbagy lose one game 12/10 to a young 12 year old called Diego.

After a good rest day on Sunday I was privileged to be invited to watch the celebrations for the Mexican Independence Day with Samantha Teran, her family and friends, and a most enjoyable time we had. I feel part Mexican now.

However, today I travelled another 50 km with all the players to settle in to our lovely hotel here in Toluca, to rest up before the business of the tournament begins in earnest tomorrow at 2.00 p.m. local time. I am sure there will be great local interest in the qualifying rounds as there are many Mexican players involved.

I for one just cannot wait for the games to begin.

Welcome

Welcome to the Abierto Mexicano de Raquetas, an International Racquets Tournament born in Mexico, a country full with cultural heritage, history and color.

We characterize for our hospitality and we have the honor to be the host for the best squash players in the world.

The Abierto Mexicano de Raquetas, is the most important event in Mexico and Latin America so far and this year will have two racquet ranges: Squash and Racquetball.

The Abierto Mexicano de Raquetas was born in November of 2012 in Toluca State, Capital of Mexico State and an hour away of Mexico City.

Because of the 2012’s success, we are doing it all over again from September 17th to the 22nd. The AMR 2013 will have the best squash and racquetball players in the world.

Last year we gave a Total Prize Money of $110,000 USD and we had a total 48 international players participating in our AMR. In the heart of Toluca’s city, the Abierto Mexicano de Raquetas last year had a range of 4,000 visitors during the entire week event and we are expecting much more this year.

Greg aims for Toluca repeat

France's world No2 Gregory Gaultier returns to Mexico next month in a bid to retain the Abierto Mexicano de Raquetas title he won at the inaugural championship last year.

The 2013 PSA World Tour International 70 squash event takes place on an all-glass court at Alameda Park in Mexico City from 17-22 September - with former world number one Gaultier leading a high-quality field including four players from the world's top ten.

The 30-year-old from Aix-en-Provence begins the defence of his title against a qualifier - and is expected to meet Egypt's Mohamed Elshorbagy in the final. The 22-year-old world No6 from Alexandria fell to the Frenchman in the 2012 quarter-finals.

Distinguished Egyptian Amr Shabana - the four-time world champion who won the first of his 31 Tour titles at the Puebla Open in Mexico in 1999 - is the event's No3 seed, while top-ranked Spaniard Borja Golan is the fourth seed.

Last year's runner-up Omar Mosaad is the highest-ranked unseeded player in the draw. The world No11 from Cairo faces a qualifier in the opening round.

Cesar Salazar leads local interest in the event. The 25-year-old from San Luis Potosi - winner of three titles on the PSA World Tour - faces Elshorbagy in the first round.

Women's Draw

In the women's WSA $15k event Australia's Donna Urquhart is top seed, with fellow left-hander Joey Chan from Hong Kong her anticipated final; opponent.

Home fans will be cheering on Mexico's third seed Samantha Teran.
