Milo All Stars Junior Champs 2007
31-May to 04-Jun, Kuala Lumpur |
05-Jun:
Five titles for Malaysia
S. SIVABALAN reports in the Star
Malaysia walked away with five out of the 10 titles on offer with
top national junior Low Wee Wern leading the way in the Milo
All-Star squash championships at the Astaka Sports Complex here
yesterday.
Malaysia won the boys' Under-17, Under-13 and Under-11 and the
girls' Under-19 and Under-11 titles.
In a rather one sided affair, Wee Wern retained her girls' Under-19
title thumping Melodie Francis of Australia 9-1, 9-5, 9-0 in the
final.
Jadeleen Lee secured Malaysia's second title in the girls' category
bagging the Under-11 title. She defeated team-mate T. Mithila 9-6,
9-1, 9-3 in the final.
However, Wee Wern's youngster sister Wee Nee was upstaged in the
girls' Under-17 competition. Wee Nee, the top seed lost 9-7, 9-3,
8-10, 1-9, 4-9 to Hong Kong's Liu Tsz Ling, the third-fourth seed in
the final.
“After the third set, I had cramps on my left leg. There was nothing
much I could do after that,” said Wee Nee.
In the final of the boys' Under-17 competition, Jo Wen secured his
first junior title when he defeated Matt Hopkins of Australia 9-7,
3-9, 9-3, 9-5.
Darren Subramaniam and Darren Chan Til Lunn claimed the other two
titles in the boys' competition winning the Under-13 and Under-11
titles.
Darren defeated Ryosei Kobayashi of Japan 9-7, 9-4, 9-0 while Darren
Chan knocked out Kunj Rawani of India 9-7, 9-4, 9-3 in their
respective age-group finals.
However, national junior Asyraf Azan, the second seed, went down to
top seed Farzan Rashid of Pakistan in the boys' Under-19 final. In a
marathon match that lasted 160 minutes, Asyraf lost 9-7, 7-9, 2-9,
10-8, 8-10.

"I
am glad that I managed to win the title again. More importantly, I
am happy that I played better this year compared to my performance
last year.
"In the final, I had to slow down the game because Melodie is a hard
hitter. But I was a bit surprised that Melodie did not raise her
game."

"I knew what to expect
from Hopkins in the final. He waits for cross-court shots and cuts
it off early to win points. So I opted for long drives into deep
corners instead to prevent Hopkins from playing his game."
"It was enough to frustrate him and win the title."

A day of upsets
S. SIVABALAN reports in the Star
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's Brian Raj and Nessrine Ariffin scored
major upsets in the boys' and girls' Under-17 competitions of the
Milo All-Star squash championships respectively at the Astaka Sports
Complex here yesterday to reach the semi-finals.
The unseeded Brian sent second seed Brad Souter of Australia
packing, winning the quarter-final match 4-9, 9-7, 5-9, 9-1, 9-3.
With his victory, Malaysia are assured of a place in the final. The
Penangite will play against Ng Jo Wen, who defeated Chan Kai Chi of
Hong Kong 9-2, 9-3, 9-6 to advance.
“It was a good match for me. I was able to play my game – pushing
Souter deep into the corners and I waited for the loose balls to win
points,” said the 16-year-old Brian.
“This quarter-final upset win has given me more confidence for my
semi-final match. I will go all out tomorrow to try to get into the
final.”
Nessrine, who is seeded fifth-eighth, eliminated second seed V.
Anwesha Reddy of India, winning the match 7-9, 10-9, 9-3, 9-5. She
will play against Hong Kong's Liu Tsz Ling in the semi-finals.
The other semi-final is an all-Malaysian affair between top seed Low
Wee Nee and third-fourth seed Tan Yan Xin. Wee Nee came back from a
game down to beat Surbhi Misra of India 6-9, 9-1, 9-1, 9-7 while Yan
Xin knocked out Szeto Ka Hei of Hong Kong 9-7, 9-1, 9-1.
Meanwhile, Asyraf Azan and Low Wee Wern kept the Malaysian interest
alive in the boys' and girls' Under-19 competitions.
The second seeded Asyraf defeated Nathan Kam of Australia 9-2, 9-3,
9-4 to set up a semi-final match against Lee Nyeon-ho of South
Korea.
Top seed Wee Wern secured a semi-final berth easily, beating Maggy
Marshall 9-1, 9-2, 9-2. She will play against Korean Song Sun-mi for
a place in the final.
“I am playing better today (yesterday) compared to my match on
Friday. I was more prepared for my match and it was a good win,”
said Wee Wern.
“I am expecting a close match against Sun-mi and I would definitely
have to raise my game.”

Juniors descend on KL
Preview from Devinder Singh
Low Wee Wern’s chances of winning her fourth straight title
at the Milo All Stars Junior Squash Championships were boosted after
she was named the Under-19 top seed when the draw for the May
31-June 4 event was released in Petaling Jaya.
Top national junior Wee Wern, who will be defending her Under-19
title, was given a first round bye and opens against either Bak Mi
Rim of South Korea or Singapore's Pamela Chua in the second round.
She is likely to face third seed Misaki Kobayashi in the last four
before a title meeting with second-seeded Australian Melodie
Francis.
Wee Wern, who also won the Under-15 and Under-17 titles in 2004 and
2005 respectively, is one of four Malaysian girls given top billing
in their respective events.
Low Wee Nee, Wee Wern’s younger sister, will hope to win her
first All Stars title when being seeded first in the Under-17
section where she could meet India's second seed Anwesha Reddy
in the final.
But Wee Nee will likely have to get past compatriot
Tan Yan Xin, last year's Under-15 champion, in the semi-final before
entertaining any thoughts of securing her maiden title.
Malaysia could also have the Girls’ Under-13 and Under-11 titles in
the bag if Yong Sue Ann and T. Mithila stay true to their top
seedings respectively.
But Malaysia face a possible shut-out in the boys’ event after
Pakistan's Farzan Rashid (Under-19) and Shah Jahan Khan
(Under-11), India's Ravi Dixit (Under-17) and Ramit Tandon
(Under-15) and Hong Kong's Tong Tsz Wing (Under-13) were
named as favourites.
Malaysia's best hope of a win lies with second seed Muhd Asyraf
Azan in the Under-19 event where he is the defending champion.
A record draw
The Milo All Stars, the biggest junior tournament on the
international stage, will see 710 players from 16 countries
competing in the five-day meet at the Astaka courts in Petaling Jaya.
Prize money of RM43,000 is up for grabs with the Boys’ Under-19
champion receiving US$1,200 (RM4,200) while the runner-up gets
US$800 (RM2,800).
The Girls’ Under-19 winner will take home US$1,000 (RM3,500) and
runner-up US$700 (RM2,450).
Malaysia will field 361 players while the rest come from SIngapore
(87), India (49), Sri Lanka (44), Australia (40), South Korea (24),
South Africa (20), Hong Kong (10), Japan (10), Taiwan (eight), Iran
(eight), New Zealand (five) and Pakistan (three) while China,
Indonesia and the United States have one entrant each.
