Everything you didn't know you needed to know ...

BARRY : REFEREE AND COACH…

It’s not the first time that I met John Barry, another passionate about squash, as he is a coach by profession, and a referee in his spare time…

Talk about dedication!

John has been coming to Guilford for the NL for a long time now, around four years, and he loves the atmosphere of the club. During the week, he coaches in Sandridge Park, in Bromley, and his juniors are just starting to make their mark.

So, I’ll probably see you at the British Junior Open next year then, won’t I…?
BARRY: 10 MORE COURTS…

Barry Hitchcock, Director of Sports of the University of Guilford for years now, “does more for squash that he will ever admit” to quote Ian Robinson…

Thanks to his energy (along with Ian Robinson, another passionate about our sport) 10 more courts are about to be built about 5 minutes walk from the current Squash Courts. The project should be achieved by Summer 2007, and should start in less than 12 months.

But tonight, Barry, mike in hand, forgot all about paperwork, blueprints, meetings, estimates, and introduced to us the players, concentrating all his attention on what it’s all about: squash…

And he did a pretty good job too…
McGUINTY NOW IN GUILDFORD…

I was surprised (and charmed of course…) to see Peter McGuinty at Guilford last night, as he has been looking after Wimbledon Racquet Club’s first team for years.

“I now work in the area of Guilford”, said Peter, “and next year, I will try and set up the Business League with three player teams playing at the Varsity Centre. We hope to be ready by September or October, and to start with eight teams…

Guilford is buzzing…

MERCI, IAN

Thanks to Ian Robinson's directions, I found the Squash Centre first time! OK, I did a little free round around the third roundabout, as I had a problem spotting the “Varsity Car Park” sign that is written rather small.

But apart from that, didn’t get lost once!

And may I say how wonderfully welcomed I’ve been in Guilford: Colin at the bar and his staff didn’t know what to do to please, and the food was not only excellent but also original, well presented, and served quickly and with a smile.

10/10…
DEBBIE ROSS: A BROKEN ARM

At 2.30 on Tuesday afternoon, Ian Robinson received a phone call from Stacey Ross from hospital, as his wife Debbie, who had a baby boy Charley a few weeks ago, fell while jogging, breaking her arm.

“It’s OK, her mum is looking after the baby, but Debbie is in a lot of pain, and she can’t use her arm at all, she can’t drive, she can’t pick up the baby, or change him… Tomorrow, she is going back to hospital to see if she’ll need a cast.

So both Stacey and Debbie spend most of the day in hospital, not the best place to be, as we all know… Let’s hope that Debbie recovers soon ...

PROUD OF ALISON…

When he introduced the players, Barry couldn’t help bursting with pride about young Alison Waters’ exploits during the Nationals, as she has been playing for Guilford this season.

And he is right to be proud, as the young lady was playing beautifully well in Manchester, and in all her matches under Guilford’s banner.

“She has done some great performances this year”, told me Barry, “in particular when she beat Vicky Botwright for the first time in her career on the 9th November 2004. She was down 0/2, saved several match balls, and won the match in a beautiful fashion”.

So, well done Alison, and well done Guilford to have chosen a perfect representative for its colours…
