25th
July 2006:
Happy Birthday
Nick Matthew !!! |
TALL, STRONG AND HANDSOME…
It
has to be said that Nick Matthew couldn’t lose, could he, as he was
blessed to start with, having Sue and Hedley as parents… Come on,
they are just the best, you do know that, don’t you…
He is such a popular young man, Nick is. I’ll never forget when a
gorgeous young lady from the Commonwealth organisation came to me
and told me “how lucky I was to live in England as it meant that I
was able to see Nick Matthew often …”
Yes, the little bugger has grown into such an attractive young man,
hasn’t he? A devastating smile, a determined-stubborn-digging my
heels in attitude that led him to break Lee Beachill’s untarnished
record of never having been beaten from 2/0 up, a fitness close to
perfection, some wicked nicks, a complete refusal to find himself
excuses when defeated, and there you have him, the Boy from
Sheffield.
But most of all, Nick is somebody you want in your corner. He will
always be there to help you out, a sort of Mother Hen. He cares, he
looks after, he protects… And that’s why so many people absolutely
adore the boy, me included…
So, here it is, from us all at SquashSite, all our best wishes on
that special day, dear Nick….
Happy birthday, Nick. Je t’aime tout fort…

Time
and tide wait for no man (or woman to be politically
correct) and it seems as yesterday that Nick was carving out
a successful junior career.
Not quite the best of his age, he has certainly become one
of the best seniors in the world and in his 25th year he won
the coveted British Championship, the hardest of all
national titles to win.
His readiness to adapt and learn have made him a feared
opponent at top world levels and his ability to win matches
that are seemingly lost marks him as different.
On his 26th birthday he is ready to take on the world,
knowing his best days are ahead of him.
He was a finalist in last years Mamut English Open and he
will never find a better way to kickstart his 26th year than
winning that prestigious title at the famous Crucible in his
home town of Sheffield next month.
Happy birthday to him.
