Top seeds take Hamilton titles
Gary Denvir reports

Top seeds Campbell Grayson and Joelle King have swept to their respective titles at the ASB Bank North Island Squash Championships in Hamilton.

Grayson proved too sharp for second seeded fellow kiwi Graeme Wilson in the PSA men's final, romping to an 11/3 11/7 11/9 victory. It is Grayson's first PSA Tour title, capping off a superb six weeks that has seen him climb to a career high number 94 in the world rankings.

Joelle King was even more convincing in claiming her first title on the WISPA women's world tour, crushing third seed Jackie Laurenson 9/0 9/0 9/2. Like Grayson, King attained a career high ranking on the June list, climbing to number 61 in the world.

Grayson & King
on course in Hamilton

Gary Denvir reports

Top seeds Campbell Grayson and Joelle King remain on target to take out their respective titles at the North Island Squash Championships in Hamilton.

Grayson has won through to the final of the PSA men's draw without dropping a game, beating Canadian Dane Sharp in straight games in the quarterfinals, before repeating the dose against Australian Jacob Lohrisch in the semis. The world number 94 will take on fellow kiwi Graeme Wilson in the title decider tomorrow. The second seed has had a tougher run to the title decider, edging home in five against New Zealand junior number one Evan Williams before beating Auckland junior Alex Grayson in three.

In the women's WISPA draw, King dropped just one point in her semifinal win over Auckland junior Lana Harrison. The top seed will face Jackie Laurenson in the final, after the third seed upset second seeded Amanda Cranston 9/3 0/9 9/5 9/5.

Day one goes to plan in Hamilton
Gary Denvir reports

Day one has gone to the form book at the ASB Bank North Island Championships in Hamilton.

Only three of the seeded players were in action in the opening round of the PSA men's draw, with all three safely through to the second round. However, fifth seeded Australian Josh Cardwell only narrowly avoided a repeat of last week's first round exit at the South Island Open. Cardwell twice had to fight back from a game down to beat New Zealand junior team member Keegan Burkhart 5/11 11/9 8/11 11/6 11/8.

Sixth seed Evan Williams also had to dig deep to beat fellow kiwi junior Lui Syder in four, but eighth seeded Canadian Dane Sharp had few troubles in disposing of Australian Courtney West in straight games.

In the WISPA women's draw, Trina Moore and Lisa Cowlard both had straight games wins in the only two matches of the opening round, but both then met their match in the quarterfinals.

Moore won only two points as she was bulldozed by top seed Joelle King while Cowlard went down in four to second seed Amanda Cranston.

The other two quarterfinals also went to form, with third seed Jackie Laurenson and fourth seed Lana Harrison both cruising to straight games victories.

Kiwis dominate North Island Draws
Gary Denvir reports

New Zealanders dominate both the men's and women's draws at this week's ASB North Island Squash Championships in Hamilton.

Rising kiwi star Campbell Grayson gets top billing in the PSA men's draw, returning home after a successful stint in North America that has seen him rise to a career high number 94 in the world rankings. His main opposition is expected to be second seeded fellow kiwi Graeme Wilson, who is fresh from a runner-up finish at the South Island Open last week.

Australians Nathan Turnbull, Jacob Lohrisch and Josh Cardwell are seeded three, four and five respectively - all three will be hoping to improve on their first round exit in Christchurch last week.

In the women's WISPA draw, Waikato teen Joelle King gets top billing, after she also reached a career high ranking this month of number 61 in the world.  Amanda Cranston is second seed in the all kiwi line-up, while Jackie Laurenson and Lana Harrison round out the top four.

The ASB North Island Squash Championships gets underway on Friday.
