North Island Champs/Waikato Open 2007
18-20 May, Hamilton, New Zealand
Fourth straight tournament
win for Corren

North Shore's Mike Corren continued his blistering run of form, racking up his fourth straight tournament win at the North Island Championships in Hamilton.

The top seed beat second seed Josh Greenfield (Palmerston North) in a four game final.  Corren went into the PSA tournament ranked 77th in the world and the points collected by his win will help his goal to move higher in the global standings.

In the Women's Open final, top seed Sally Hawkes (Remuera) beat outstanding Papakura junior Kerry Wicket.  Wicket has staked a strong claim on a place in the four-strong NZ junior women's team for August's World Junior Championships in Hong Kong with the second-place finish.

Fellow junior Amanda Cranston (Central Districts) also looks to be a strong contender for the team after finishing third despite being the number 12 seed.  She beat second seed Rebecca Hawkes in the third/fourth place playoff.  The junior women's team will be announced in early July.

Corren bids for fourth
straight tournament win

Mike Corren will battle a strong men's field for his fourth straight tournament win at the squash North Island Championships / Waikato Open this weekend. The North Shore player took out the recent South Island Championships as well as the Titirangi Open and Remuera Open in April.

Corren is currently the 77th-ranked player in the world and along with his competitors he will play to gain valuable international ranking points at the tournament at the PSA event, at the Hamilton Squash and Racquet Club from Friday till Sunday.

Remuera's Sally Hawkes has become the top seed in the Women's Open, as Joelle King has pulled out of the tournament with illness.

The Women's Open field boasts some of the country's top female juniors in Kerry Wicket, Lana Harrison, Amanda Cranston, Alana Sincock and Aliesha Watene, who will vie for spots in the four-strong New Zealand team for the World Junior Championships in Hong Kong in August. The team will be announced in early July.

The tournament has a strong field, with 32 draws for both the men's and women's open divisions.
