18-Nov:
Mak takes maiden title in Islamabad

The final of WISPA Pakistan Open Squash Championship, 2007 was played today at Mushaf Squash Complex, Islamabad, as Hong Kong's Christina Mak beat Donna Urquhart to claim her first WISPA title.

Dr Shamshad Akhtar, Governor State Bank of Pakistan was the Chief Guest on the final Ceremony, Mr Umar Haider GM Govt.

Relations from WARID Telecom and AVM Asim Suleiman Senior Vice President, PSF were also present on the occasion and awarded trophies to the winner and runner up.

"The first two games went easily because she pushed herself too much. I tried to slow her down because she likes to play at a fast pace, and then she started to make mistakes. In the third, I wanted to finish off quite quickly, so I went for winners but it didn’t work. In the forth when I was 5/3 up, I kind of rolled my shoulder too much so I had three minutes of injury time. After getting back on court, I thought may be I wouldn’t be able to play for so long , so that’s why I tried to slow down the pace again, trying to focus on every point, because I was just four points away from my title…and it went quite close until the end.

"I’d like to thank the physiotherapist of Pakistani team, who helped me with my injury. I very much thank the PSF, and all the organizers for this wonderful event… WARID and other sponsors for their great support. Linda for teaching us so much of her experiences…Javid and Mehvesh for all their help and all the hard work the put in to make us feel so safe and comfortable.

"Also all the people back home who support me…my coach, Tony, Dick, Faheem, Wazir, and Imran here!

"We had lots of fun with other players during the week…it’s amazing to play here in Pakistan and hopefully I'll be here again in the future. "

[1] Christina Mak (Hkg) bt [2] Donna Urquhart (Aus)
          9/2, 9/3, 7/9, 9/7 (56m)

"I had a bad start today. I felt nervous, and it wasn’t until I was 4/0 down in the third that I started to relax and play my own game. I got dragged into playing her game in the first and second.

"Christina played very well today and didn’t give me much to work with. So all credit to her!

"I feel that if I could have taken the fourth game it may have been a different result, but it just wasn’t my day today.

"All in all it has been a really good week, and I have enjoyed my time here in Pakistan."

Donna and the chocolate factory!

On Thursday afternoon, before the opening ceremony, which was to start with Deon’s match on the glass court, we were all sitting around together chatting.

Linda Davie came with this piece of paper and a pen and asked us to make a list of the things we needed.

Deon and Kirsty started the list by writing down energy drinks and bananas, and then they passed the paper over to me.

Donna was sitting next to me, and finishing mine I asked her what she needed. "Ah…just chocolate," she said.

The list was ready and Linda was checking the items.

"Who wants milk?" Linda asked.

"me…" I answered.

"It’s 'straight from the cow' back here Sima … do you still want it?"

"No thanks!" I replied.

"…and who said chocolate ???"

"…me…," Donna answered,  sinking silently down into her seat…

Linda gave her a sly smile, and disappeared.

A few minutes later, she showed up with this HUGE chocolate bar!

Donna was indeed lost for words ...

And…guess what?....when we went back, Donna left her laptop on the table but the chocolate was saved!"

Women's Semi-Finals

[1] Christina Mak (Hkg) bt
[4] Deon Saffery (Wal)  9/5, 9/7, 9/1 (37m)

"She had an easy match yesterday … my target was to move her around, and in the first two game, although I made a lot of mistakes, I managed to do that.

"Deon came up with some good cross-courts in the first couple of games and it took me a while to get used to her shots…but I think I played a good game in the third…I’m quite satisfied with my match today, and I look forward to the final tomorrow…

"Here they have one of the best glass courts, in where I can see the ball easily. But one has to get use to the conditions on the glass courts, like when the AC ‘s on and it gets a bit cold in there…so you should make a good selection your shots…happy to finish it in three and save some energy for tomorrow!"

"It’s not the best I played…it’s all about the experience…playing on the glass court is quite different so I need to get more practice to get used to it because your game changes on a glass court…the refereeing was fine and I’m happy with it…but my game didn’t come together, I couldn’t get a good length and I made a few errors…

"Christina has a slow game, she varies the ball well…and that’s actually how I like to play! So having the same game makes it harder…Christina’s experience showed against me something I have to work on it…

"Well my opening match; it was tough to play in front of a crowed…but I got through it, digging in and working hard…in my second match I got to play my game lot better…feeling lot comfortable to play quite well…"

[2] Donna Urquhart (Aus) bt
[3] Kirsty McPhee (Eng) 9/1, 9/4, 9/2 (24m)

"I started much better than yesterday!

"Much more focused today…yesterday I was very nervous, today I was on to concentrate on what I had to do and it came together nicely...

"I’d never played Kirsty before but she didn’t seem to play her game today…so happy to make the final, and hopefully to play well tomorrow…"

"I’ve not played for a while…I’ve been injured, but my ankle’s well now…

"I hadn’t played matches for a while and I really noticed that today playing Donna, I just couldn’t see the ball…

"She played well and didn’t make too many errors … hopefully I'll be better next time!”

17-Nov:
Top Seeds To Contest Pakistan Open Final

The top two seeds have emerged to contest the final of the Women's Pakistan Open in Islamabad.
Hong Kong favourite Christina Mak dismissed Pakistan's No7 seed Muqaddas Ashraf in the quarter-finals before overcoming England's fourth seed Deon Saffery in the semi-finals.

There was further English disappointment in the other semi-final when Australia's second seed Donna Urquhart defeated Kirsty McPhee, the third seed from Yorkshire. Both finalists are celebrating their second appearances in a WISPA final - with each seeking her maiden title.

In the men's event the top four seeds - all Pakistanis - moved into the semi-finals.

Rushna Mehboob into Pakistan quarters

Unseeded Rushna Mehboob beat fellow Pakistani Saima Shoukat, the No6 seed, in the only upset on the opening day of action in the Women's Pakistan Open in Islamabad. Mehboob will now face England's third seed Kirtsy McPhee in the quarter-finals - all four of which will feature local interest.

In the men's event main draw places were claimed by four Pakistani players after three qualifying rounds, with New Zealand's Pakistan-born Kashif Shuja the only non-home player in the draw, which was reduced after the PSA withdrew its sanction due to the state of emergency in the country, leading to the withdrawal of most international entrants.

12-Nov-07:
TOURNAMENT REDUCES AS PLAYERS PULL OUT
From the Daily Times

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) has suffered a big setback as all top seed foreign players have refused to take part in the Pakistan Open Squash Championship due to imposition of emergency across the country, an official of Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) told Daily Times Sunday here on Sunday.

The championship is starting from November 14 at Mushaf Squash Complex in Islamabad. “All foreign players have informed to the organisers that they will not participate in the Pakistan Open due to imposition of emergency in the country as circumstances are not favourable,” the official added. He said the main draw of the men’s event would be reduced from 32 to 16 players.

11-Nov-07:
LATEST FROM ISLAMABAD

Tournament referee Linda Davie arrived in Islamabad today.

"My reception was absolutely fine, the preparations for the tournaments are complete, and the situation seems quite normal. The PSF are ready for the events to go ahead.

"WISPA are reported to be happy to support the women's event - Donna Urquhart is already here and more players are expected soon - and while the PSF is uncertain as to what the removal of the PSA sanction actually means, they have had no notification of any player withdrawals, and will be at the airport to collect players as per the arrival schedule.

"The PSF looks forward to hosting a wonderful event."

Tournament Referee

10-Nov-07:
"Due to concerns for the safety and security of its players,
the PSA Board has, with regret, taken the decision to withdraw its
sanction of next week's Pakistan Open in Islamabad."  PSA announcement
