27-Aug-07, Semis:
Maria misses out on
maiden WISPA final

Pakistan's top woman squash player Maria Toor Pakay missed out on making her maiden appearance in a WISPA final after losing a five-game semi-final thriller in the POF Wah Cantt Open at the Jahangir Khan Squash Complex in the Punjab city of Wah Cantt in Pakistan.

The 16-year-old left-hander from Peshawar, who won her first national title this year, took the opening two games against No2 seed Lim Yoke Wah. But the Malaysian soon regained the upper hand and closed out the match in 48 minutes.

The third staging of the Tour event will climax in its second successive all-Malaysian final when Lim Yoke Wah faces favourite Delia Arnold.

The 21-year-old from Kuala Lumpur, who finished as runner-up last year, beat fourth-seeded compatriot Siti Munirah Jusoh 10-8, 9-4, 9-6 in the other semi-final

quarters in Wah Cantt

From the Daily Times

Pakistan’s top squash girl Maria Toor had to work hard to achieve victory against Zoya Khalid as the main round of the WISPA event got under way at the Jahangir Khan Complex in Wah Cantt on Friday.

Maria, who recently performed well in the Alexandria Open, beat Zoya 9-3, 6-9, 9-3 and 9-5.

Earlier, Misbah Rani gave a good fight to Malaysian Pushppa Davi before going down 9-3, 9-6, 9-2. The match that continued for well over 30 minutes saw Misbah fighting it out well in the second game. She gave a tough fight to the Malaysian girl before going down.

The other Pakistani girl who made it into the quarter-finals was Muqaddas Ashraf (Pak) who defeated her countrywoman Habiba Khan (Pak) 9-4, 9-2, 9-4. The match that lasted for 20 minutes saw both players playing occasional long rallies.

Lt Gen Syed Sabahat Husssain, chairman POF Board, declared the championship open in an impressive ceremony. A Special Children’s performance was the highlight of the opening ceremony.
