Lesley Willstrop Pontefract Doubles
28-30 August 2008
James well pleased with doubles ...

Whatever expectation James Willstrop had when he set out to organise a Doubles Tournament in memory of his mother Lesley, he will be well satisfied. For three days everyone involved appeared to enjoy themselves; there was support from all quarters and £7,000 was raised for the Martin's House Hospice Wetherby for children and their families.

Derek Ryan, Ireland's best squash player ever, brought a party of sociable Irishmen and one lady to support the event; Christian Donelan, like Derek another long term Pontefract member, was there with his wife, Jenny, both of them happily recovered from serious injuries from a bomb outrage on their honeymoon abroad.

The auction, which had support from Leeds Rhinos, Malcolm Pickup at the Galpharm Stadium, Jim McGrath, chairman of Timeform and Lee Campion, Lesley's eldest son, amongst others, was a spectacular success, raising over 3000 pounds. Prime movers in the auction were John Taylor, who paid 400 pounds for a signed St.Helen's shirt; Paul Moulton, who bought a signed picture of Dennis Law and 4 badges for the St Leger for over 700 pounds and the Irish, who - well oiled - bid for anything that moved!

Vanessa Atkinson joined forces with club supremo Mick Todd to win the Pro-am; club stalwarts Simon Gittins and Stuart Hargreaves were ultimately too steady for Neil Cordell in the men's doubles; Lauren Siddall and Andrea Santamaria won the Women's doubles and Sam Wileman, who had been competing in the Andy Gill Memorial as well, got back in time to win the Mixed with Deon Saffery.

Thanks are due to the professionals and it was good to see Peter Marshall, Simon Parke and David Campion, friends from a very young age. Peter and Simon enjoyed Lesley's hospitality on many occasions.

Many people contributed to make a success of the event, but Terry Dudley, tournament organiser, Josie Walsh, who dealt with the finances and acquired the financial support of Barclay's bank and Willis Rushton who organised the excellent musical entertainment on finals night deserve a special mention.

Such was the success that it is intended to hold the event annually.

The Lesley Willstrop doubles tournament begins on Thursday with Men's ,Women's and Mixed events. Happily since all the proceeds will go to the Martin's House hospice for children in Wetherby, there are large entries in each category.

The formidable looking combination of Deon Saffery and Sam Wileman head a powerful mixed event, whilst father and son combination of Alan and Sam Norrish top the men's draw with experienced pair Simon Gittins and Stuart Hargreaves at two. Mark Swift and professional musician James Fender look a likely pair and the combined bulk of Mick Todd and Gary Siddall will need cicumnavigation.

The women's draw sees Lauren Siddall and Andrea Santamaria and Deon Saffery and Sarah Bowles, fresh from the world universities championships, as top seeds.

The Pro-Am takes place on Saturday, featuring such famous names as James Willstrop, organiser in chief of the event, brother David Campion, British over 35 Open champion, Peter Marshall, former World no.2, Simon Parke, former World no.3, Vanessa Atkinson, former World no.1 and world champion, Jenny Duncalf, world no.6, Sarah Kippax, Manchester's ambassadress for the forthcoming World Championships, and Lauren Siddall, local heroine.

Terry Dudley is the tounament director and an auction will be held for which there are some special items: Kevin Sinfield, Leeds Rhinos captain, Jim McGrath,Chairman of Timeform and Malcom Pickup, Galpharm Stadium have all contributed.

Highlight, though, will be items procured by Lesley's eldest son, no player himself but with two capable daughters, Catherine and Emma. Lee has provided two tickets for Scouting for Girls in October, and 200 pounds of men's and women's clothing vouchers from Gio Goi. The auction monies will be matched by Barclay's Bank to the tune of 700 pounds, arranged by club member Josie Walsh.

James Willstrop and David Campion will stage a Doubles Championship from 28th to 30th August in memory of their mother, Lesley, the proceeds of which will go to the Martin House Hospice, Wetherby.

Apart from Men's, Women's and Mixed categories, which are open to players of all standards, there will be a pro-am doubles on the Saturday.

The following professionals will be taking part and bids are invited from any amateurs who would like to play with any of them.
