07-Nov, Semis:
Rogers & Meguid
make Prague final
Tomas Forter reports
The first semi between two, Egyptians
Omar Abdel Meguid and Karim Abdel Gawad, brought some
shots as you would expect from two Egyptians but most of the time
they both played basic squash.
Omar got to good start in the first but Karim came back from 3/7 to
9/7. The last four points were won by Omar and he won the first.
Second was close from the beginning. Karim led 7/6 but again next
four points were won by Omar with the help of few mistakes by Karim.
Omar got to very good start in the third again, soon he raced to 8/3
but Karim was once again able to level at 8/8. One stroke and
another tin from Karim won two matchballs for Omar. Karim was able
to save the first but tinned another drop to give the match to Omar.
The local crowd was hoping Martin Stepan was going to repeat
his brilliant performance from yesterday in today's semis against
top seed Mark Rogers.
In the first Martin was moving well and was able to stay in rallies
with hard hitting Mark and at the end just managed to win. Martin
led 7/0 in the second but Mark came back very strong. Martin started
to look tired and Mark used this very well to turn the game to 11/8.
The third was close affair all the way with Mark winning 14/12 after
Martin had one gameball as well.
In the fourth Martin got off to good start and won the game
comfortably. Mark was probably saving himself for the deciding game
because he started very fast. He was hitting the ball low and hard
and soon he led 4/0. Martin came back to 4/5 but great cross court
nick and stroke got Mark to 7/4. The rallies were long and tough.
Both players were tired but both of them wanted to win.
At 9/6 to Mark Martin made the only mistake in the last game. First
match was saved with tight drop which Mark hit to himself. But
surprising reverse angle caught Martin by surprise and Mark was
through to the final.

"Congratulations to
Omar for his win. He played really well today. I was a little tired
from my four matches in last two days. I tried my best to play and
win but he has a lot of experience."

"Very close match. The
deciding game was the second where I came back from 0/7. All in all
I was happy with the way I played."

"I am ... (censored).
I lost the second from being 7/0 up. I expected to get tired but
during the match I realized he was maybe more tired than I was. But
I was not able to use it and that's why I am disappointed to loose
even more."

06-Nov, Quarters:
Czech hopes still alive ...
Tomas Forter reports
Czech hopes are still alive in Prague after Martin Stepan
played one of his best matches to beat Englishman Olivier Pett
in five games. Olly won the first easily when Martin was just
warming up and not trying hard. Then he started to play serious
squash. He likes very slow pace so he tried to lob almost everything
and this tactics worked well for him. He got to good starts at the
beginning of second and third and managed to keep the lead till the
end. In the fourth Olly was able to come back after Martin won first
three points of the game with three strokes, he got ahead at 6/5 and
kept the lead till the end.
The beginning of the fifth was very close 1/1, 2/2, 3/3, then Martin
got to 5/3 and 8/4. He got to matchball at 10/6, Olly saved two but
then tinned a drop to give victory to Martin.
"I expected him not to like my slow
pace as those young players usually like to hit the ball hard, so I
slowed it down and it worked well for me. He also got a bit nervous
after I came back after losing the first easily, which gave me the
confidence to fight and finally win the match."

"I played well in my first match, Petr played excellent squash to
level at 1/1. But after that I was moving and hitting targets very
well. I was happy to win the first match. Quarters was interesting.
He did not try in the first. I relaxed after that and when he
started to play well I lost my confidence. I am a bit disappointed
to lose but Martin played really solid squash today."
Karim Abdel Gawad beat Adrian
Waller in four. The first three games were very close and hard
fought and also full of decisions by the referee. After Adrian lost
the second and third after having gameballs in both he lost his
composure in fourth and Karim raced through to the semis.
Top seed Mark Rogers beat Issa Kamara very comfortably. He
was in control for the whole match and pleased the spectators with a
number of shots.
The second Czech player in the quarters was Lukas Jelinek, who
played Egyptian Omar Abdel Meguid. Omar won the first easily,
Lucas came back strong to level. Lukas led in the first part of
third and fourth but Omar was always able to come back and win both
games at the end with a help from mistakes by Lukas.
"I was not reading him
in the first at all. Then I got used to it so I manage to keep him
in the rallies and it was very close. I am quite happy with my game
but I always made a bad mistakes at the end of the games."
|

"Adrian is very strong, his basic game
is very good. He made also a few things which led to my loss of
concentration.
"I did not succeed to play a safe game. I took a lot of risks in the
first so I had to play basic squash like Adrian after that. In the
fourth game I was finally able to play my game.
"I am glad to reach the semi-finals."

"Disappointed with how I played today. I feel I was hard done at
crucial times of the match by referee."
"I felt really confident in my evening
match, all my shots were coming in. In my first match I was a bit
shaky and was happy to win 3/0".

"My first match was tough. I tried to be patient. Dom played really
well but I knew if I would be patient I would win the match and that
is what happened at the end.
"In the quarters I was not moving well. I was very slow. I did not
make it very hard for Mark and this way you can not win. He was just
too strong and consistent."
