November 2008:
Darwish gets his just desserts
It's
another good month for Egyptians in the November world rankings,
with Amr Shabana maintaining a tight grip on the top spot and
Karim Darwish rising to a best-ever number two position.
A place in the World Open final was quickly followed by a first
major title in the Qatar Classic last weekend as Darwish jumps four
places, leapfrogging compatriot Ramy Ashour who remains in
fourth spot despite winning the World Open in Manchester.
The
biggest mover in the top 20 is Lee Beachill, the former
number one drops to 19th place after playing in Manchester and Qatar
shortly after knee surgery, while another former number one John
White, who announced his retirement in Manchester, rises two
places to number 15.
The two biggest movers of them all though are also Egyptian, world
junior champion Mohamed El Shorgagy, who is rewarded for his
October performances with a rise of 29 places to number 33, and
Karim Abdel Gawad, whose Goshen Open triumph propels him from
331 to 248, a rise of 83 places! |

October 2008:
Egyptian trio in top six
While Egypt’s Amr
Shabana continues to head the rankings
it is his home nation that steals the headlines in the new October
list -
with three Egyptians in the top six for the first
time.
Shabana, the 29-year-old from Cairo who
extends his unbroken reign as world number one to 31 months, is
joined in the top six by fourth-placed Ramy Ashour, the now
21-year-old from Cairo, and Karim Darwish – the 27-year-old
from Cairo who celebrates his highest ranking for more than four
years by rising to No6.
Marriage to fellow Egyptian
international Engy Kheirallah last December seems to have
revitalised Darwish’s career: The former world junior champion won
the Oregon Open in Canada in February as the No2 seed, then
went on to exceed his seeding in the British Open, reaching
the semi-finals. Seeded four, Darwish marked his 20th
PSA Tour final appearance in August in the climax of the
Petrosport International on home soil.
The trio will be next be in action
later this month in England in the Hi-Tec World Open in
Manchester – where defending champion Shabana will be hoping to
become only the fourth player in history to win the sport’s most
prized title for a fourth time.
Shabana heads an unchanged top five,
with Frenchman Gregory Gaultier in second place, ahead of
England's James Willstrop at three; and Australia's
British Open champion David Palmer at five.
Up to 11th
place in the October list is Peter Barker, the Englishman who
denied David Palmer a victory in his 50th
Tour final appearance at the Merritt Properties Open in
Baltimore. Barker clinched his second upset over the Australian in
two weeks to secure the 12th Tour title of
his career.
Spaniard Borja Golan, who achieved
successive ‘best ever’ wins over Thierry Lincou and James
Willstrop en-route to the final of the Internationaux de
France - the first major squash championship to be held in Paris
since 1995 – makes a welcome return to the world top 20.

August 2008:
Bengy back in
single figures
While
Egypt's world champion Amr Shabana extends his reign at the
top of the August Men's World Rankings, Malaysian Ong Beng Hee
celebrates his return to a single-figure ranking for the first time
since December 2003.
Fighting back to the form which led the former
world junior champion to a career-high No7 ranking in 2001, Ong Beng
Hee has enjoyed great success this year - winning his first
PSA title for three years at the KL Open
in May, then returning to his homeland last month to clinch the
third Malaysian Open title of his career.
The UK-based Malaysian jumps two places
in the new list to No9.
Frenchman Gregory Gaultier remains in
second place, ahead of England's James
Willstrop at three; Shabana's fellow
countryman Ramy Ashour at No4, and Australia's
recently-crowned British Open champion David Palmer at five.
Lower in the list, Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema
celebrates his highest-ever ranking of 15. The 25-year-old from
The Hague secured the seventh Tour title of his career at the
Bluenose Classic in Canada in February after reaching the
final of the National Capital Open in the USA earlier in the
month.
Outside the top 20, Egyptian Omar Mosaad
rises to a career-high 23rd place, boosted by his title success in
the SWM Open
in the USA in June.

July 2008:
28 Months for Shabana
In an unchanged top twenty list,
world champion Amr Shabana celebrates his 28th successive
month as world number one in the July
World Rankings.
The run confirms the Egyptian's
status as the fifth longest-standing world number one of
all-time - behind Pakistanis Jansher Khan and Jahangir
Khan, Englishman Peter Nicol and Australian Geoff
Hunt.
Frenchman Gregory Gaultier
remains in second place, ahead of England's James Willstrop
at three; Shabana's fellow countryman Ramy Ashour at
No4, and Australia's recently-crowned British Open
champion David Palmer at five.
Pakistan's Aamir Atlas Khan
consolidates his status as the highest-ranked teenager by rising
to a career-high 23. The 17-year-old from Peshawar justified
his top seeding in last month's $30k
CAS International by winning in
Islamabad to bring his Tour title triumphs on home soil to
three.
Egyptian Omar Mosaad also
celebrates a best-ever ranking. The 20-year-old from Cairo won
the Scott Wealth Management Open in June in California,
USA, against expectation - and now rises to 24.
A notable absentee from the July list is
Welshman Alex Gough. The former world No5, who has
appeared in the rankings without a break from September 1993 -
and maintained a presence in the world top 30 from May 1997
until June 2008 - has retired from the Tour to take up the new
PSA position as Chief Operating Officer. |

June 2008:
Palmer Returns To Top Five In New World Rankings
Victory in last month's Dunlop British Open
has taken Australia's David Palmer back into the world top
five.
Egypt's world champion Amr Shabana moves
into his 27th successive month at the top of the new list, ahead of
second-placed Frenchman Gregory Gaultier; England's James
Willstrop close behind at three; and Shabana's fellow countryman
Ramy Ashour at No4.
Former world number one Palmer affirmed his
status as one of the sport's greats when he beat James Willstrop in
a dramatic British Open final in Liverpool to claim the prestigious
title for a fourth time. The rejuvenated 31-year-old from New South
Wales, now based in Boston, USA, took his PSA Tour title haul to 22
- more than any other current player an the Tour.
Palmer, who has maintained an unbroken presence
in the world's top ten since September 2000, now celebrates his 81st
month in the top five.
Peter Barker,
the English left-hander who achieved his second successive
quarter-final berth in the British Open in May, moves back into the
top ten to a career-equalling-high No10.
Laurens Jan Anjema
enhances his status as the highest-ranked
Dutchman of all-time by rising to a best-ever 16th place in the new
list. The 25-year-old from The Hague celebrated his seventh Tour
win at the Bluenose Classic in Canada in February.
Shahier Razik
brings the number of nations represented in the world top twenty to
nine - and becomes the first Canadian in the elite list since
December 2006 by rising to a career-high No20. The 30-year-old from
Toronto celebrated his 27th PSA Tour final appearance, and his 18th
title, when he won the Talisman Energy Bankers Hall Club Open
on home soil in January.
Of note, too, is the five position leap by
Miguel Angel Rodriguez to a career-best No23 ranking. The
22-year-old from Bogotá has become the highest-ranked Colombian of
all-time - and, at just 22, already boasts eight titles from 15
final appearances since April 2005!

May 2008:
Gaultier
moves up to two
While Egypt's world champion Amr Shabana
maintains his lead at the top of the May Dunlop PSA Men's World
Squash Rankings, Frenchman Gregory Gaultier moves up to
second place in the new list.
Shabana, the 28-year-old from Cairo now in his 26th
successive month as world number one, strengthened his position at
the top by winning the $200,000 Kuwait Open title last month
- beating his second-seeded compatriot Ramy Ashour in the
final.
But Ashour, who had defeated Shabana earlier in
the month in the final of the Hurghada International in
Egypt, has slipped two positions to No4 - behind Gaultier and
England's James Willstrop.
Gaultier, who defends his British Open
title in Liverpool next week, lost out to Shabana in the Kuwait
semi-finals.
Willstrop has enjoyed an impressive run of form
this year - winning three PSA Tour events in a row in Sweden, the
USA and the UK before ending his 15-match unbeaten run in the Kuwait
quarter-finals.
Victory in the Dayton Open in January and
a surprise semi-final berth in Kuwait takes Thierry Lincou
back into the world top five after a seven-month absence.
Malaysia's Ong Beng Hee has much to
celebrate after jumping two places to No10 - marking his first
appearance in the top ten since December 2003.
Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema is celebrating
his best-ever ranking. The 25-year-old from The Hague picked up his
seventh PSA Tour title in February when he won the Bluenose
Classic in Canada.

April 2008:
It's still Shabana as Malaysians rise
Little
change in the men's world rankings this month with the top 11 places
remaining unchanged, but the Malaysian duo of Ong Beng Hee and
Azlan Iskandar has profited from their meeting in the final of
the KL Open, both moving up 5 places to 12 and 13 respectively.
The biggest sufferer was Egypt's Mohammed Abbas, who lost the
points he gained in winning the 2007 KL event and slumps seven
places to number 20.
Amr Shabana extends his two-year reign at the top, and has a
big points lead over his challengers, but Ramy Ashour, Gregory
Gaultier, James Willstrop and David Palmer are all tightly
bunched, so whoever does best in Hurghada and Kuwait later this
month will be well rewarded both in prize money and rankings terms.
It's
Shabana's 25th month at the top, thereby claiming the longest
unbroken run as world number one since legendary Pakistani Jansher
Khan more than ten years ago.
The 28-year-old from Cairo - who became a father last month -
first topped the rankings in April 2006, since when he has won nine
PSA titles. In December in Bermuda, Shabana won his third World Open
crown - and his fourth successive PSA Super Series title in just two
months!
After record eight times world champion Jansher Khan completed a
53-month world number one run in January 1998, his English successor
Peter Nicol established a 24-month unbroken run which ended in
December 2003.

Feb 2008:
Shabana holds
on
to
World Number One
ranking
Despite being out of action throughout
the first month of the New Year, Egypt's Amr Shabana
maintains his grip on the world number one ranking, according to the
February Dunlop
PSA Men's World Squash Rankings.
While the 28-year-old from Cairo has
been recovering from acute tendonitis in his wrist, his compatriot
Ramy Ashour picked up the first
Super Series
title of the year - winning the Bear
Stearns Tournament of Champions in New York to cement his
place in second place in the list. The pair are expected to meet
head-to-head in the final of the Pace Canadian Classic later
in the month in Toronto.
England's James
Willstrop, runner-up in New York, also
fails to move from sixth place - but is now less than a point behind
compatriot Nick Matthew, the No5 behind third-placed
Frenchman Gregory Gaultier and No4 David Palmer, from
Australia.
Egypt's Wael El Hindi is the highest mover, returning to his
career-high ninth place after reaching the Tournament of Champions'
quarter-finals.
Englishman Lee Beachill, who makes his first PSA Tour
appearance this year at the Case Swedish Open next week after
undergoing hernia surgery early in the New Year, returns to the top
ten - at 10 - for the first time for almost a year.
A three-place jump to 15 is achieved
this month by
Adrian Grant, the
English left-hander who won the Comfort Inn Open in Vancouver
last month.

Nov 2007:
One point is enough
for Shabana ...
By the smallest margin on record, Amr Shabana maintains his position
at the top of the Dunlop PSA Men's World Squash Rankings, just one
point in a thousand ahead of fellow Egyptian Ramy Ashour.
After
reaching his first PSA Tour final for more than seven months at the
Saudi International last month, Shabana beat Ashour in four games to
avenge April's defeat in the Kuwait Open climax.
The PSA rankings calculations concluded that Shabana's average
points total for the new month was 1,098.75, whilst Ashour achieved
1097.50!
The two Egyptians boast a 300-point lead over France's third-placed
Gregory Gaultier; who is followed by Australia's David Palmer in
fourth place; and Englishman James Willstrop at No5.
England's Nick Matthew jumps four places to No6 in the new list
following his victory in the US Open in New York at the beginning of
last month.
Fellow Englishman Peter Barker also has cause for celebration after
rising to a career-high 13th place in the rankings. The 24-year-old
from Essex followed his title victory in the Colombian Open in
September by securing a surprise quarter-final berth in the Dunlop
British Open later in the month.

June 2007:
Shabana become Fourth Longest-Standing World No1
Egypt's
Amr Shabana celebrates his 15th month at the top of the
Dunlop PSA Men's World Squash Rankings, according to the new June
list - and thus becomes the fourth longest-standing world number one
of all-time.
After sharing 14 months at the top of the prestigious list last
month with Canadian Jonathon Power and Frenchman Thierry Lincou, the
two-times world champion from Cairo has pushed the pair into fifth
place - now taking fourth position exclusively behind former greats
Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan from Pakistan, and England's Peter
Nicol.
Amr Shabana won his first PSA Tour title in Mexico in 1999 and went
on to amass 16 titles, including two World Open crowns (in 2003 and
2005). He first topped the world rankings in April last year.
There
is further cause for Egyptian celebration in the new list as teen
sensation Ramy Ashour moves up to a career-high No2 in the
June rankings - just 42 points behind his illustrious compatriot.
The 19-year-old from Cairo shocked the squash world in April when he
won the two biggest titles of the year - clinching the $200,000
Sheikha Al Saad Kuwait Open trophy and then the $120,000 Qatar
Classic in Doha within six days, to bring his title haul for the
year to four!
Australia's World Open champion David Palmer slips to three, ahead
of Frenchmen Gregory Gaultier, at 4, and Thierry Lincou, at 5, in an
otherwise unchanged top ten.

May 2007:
Ramy Rises to
World top three
Egyptian
teen sensation Ramy Ashour has leapt to a career-high world
No3 in the new April Dunlop PSA Men's World Squash Rankings.
The 19-year-old from Cairo shocked the squash world last month when
he won the two biggest titles of the year so far - clinching the
$200,000 Sheikha Al Saad Kuwait Open trophy and then the $120,000
Qatar Classic in Doha within six days!
It was less than 12 months ago that Ashour made history by winning
the World Junior Championship title for a second time - and his
rapid transition to the senior stage has already seen the remarkable
youngster win four major PSA Tour titles this year.
Ashour's compatriot Amr Shabana retains his status as the
world's No1 player in the new list, celebrating his 14th successive
month at the top of the rankings. But Australia's World Open
champion David Palmer returns to second place after achieving
his seeding in both of the PSA Super Series Platinum events in
Kuwait City and Qatar.
In a notable month for Egyptians, Wael El Hindi also records
a career-high position in the new list. The 26-year-old from Cairo
leaps four places to No10 to mark his top ten debut after reaching
the quarter-finals in Kuwait and the last four in Doha.
England's Peter Barker continues his top 20 rise by moving to
a best-ever 16th place - boosted by an unexpected quarter-final
berth in the Qatar Classic.

April 2007:
Shabana extends world
number one
reign
Roundup from Howard Harding
Victory in last month's Bear Stearns Tournament of Champions in New
York ensures that Egypt's Amr Shabana extends his reign at
the top of the new April World Rankings.
The
27-year-old from Cairo became only the third player in the event's
history to successfully defend the prestigious US title - in a
triumph at Grand Central Terminal which brought his trophy haul to
16.
Frenchman Gregory Gaultier maintains his career-high No2
position, ahead of an unchanged top six which features Australians
David Palmer and Anthony Ricketts at three and six,
respectively; France's
Thierry Lincou at four; and Egyptian
teenager Ramy Ashour in fifth place.
Englishman
James Willstrop, who beat
higher-seeded compatriot Nick Matthew en-route to winning the
ISS Canary Wharf Classic in London last month, overtakes
Matthew to rise to seven in the new list.
John White, the 33-year-old Scot who
created a personal record by enduring four successive five-game
matches at East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf before finally yielding
to Willstrop in a courageous 71-minute climax, jumps three places to
No9 to make a welcome return to the world top ten.
Egypt's Mohammed Abbas celebrates a career-high No13 ranking
in the new list. The 26-year-old from Giza achieved two notable
upsets - beating top seed Nick Matthew and No3 seed
Stewart Boswell - to win the CIMB Kuala Lumpur Open in
Malaysia, his biggest PSA Tour title to date.
But,
perhaps the most notable achievement in the April rankings is the
long-awaited return to the top ten of Stewart Boswell. In
May 2003, twelve months after reaching a career-high world No4, the
Australian was struck down with a mystery back ailment which kept
him away from the tour for almost two
years.
By
the time he was fit enough to return to the circuit, his ranking had
slumped to 300. But by the end of 2005, he had amassed a further
eight PSA Tour titles and was back in the top 20!
A
combination of three quarter-final berths in Super Series
events since October, plus reaching the final of the Kuala Lumpur
Open last month, has brought the 28-year-old from Canberra back
amongst the world's elite.

01-Mar-07:
Greg goes to
two
Roundup from Howard Harding
France's Gregory Gaultier rises to a career-high No2 in the
new March Dunlop PSA Men's World Squash Rankings.
The
24-year-old from Aix-en-Provence, who was outside the top ten at the
beginning of last year, consistently reached or bettered his seeding
position in PSA Tour events throughout 2006 - achieving
finals berths on six occasions, including the World Open as
eighth seed, and claiming the titles in both the Hungarian Open
in October and the US Open in November.
Surprisingly, his 2007 campaign has not gone Gaultier's way, with
disappointing runs in the Canadian Classic and Windy City
Open, followed by an ankle injury which forced his withdrawal
from the current Tournament of Champions in New York.
"I'm
happy to have climbed to
number two,
but my aim is to be number one.
"At
the moment, I'm recovering from injury, so I'm not that concerned
about the rankings, I'm
just trying
to
work to come back to my best, and training
for my next tournaments...

Egypt's Amr Shabana completes an uninterrupted 12 months at
the top of the rankings after first reaching No1 in April 2006.
Since then, Shabana has won four PSA Tour titles - including
the Windy City Open, his seventh PSA Super Series
crown, in January this year.
Gaultier
has leapfrogged David Palmer in the March rankings, thus
ending the Australian's 12-month hold on the No2 position in the PSA
list - despite winning the Swedish Open title earlier this
month.
France's
Thierry Lincou
and Egyptian teenager Ramy Ashour hold onto fourth and fifth
places, respectively, while Australia's Anthony Ricketts
moves up to No6 after reaching the final of the Windy City Open
in January and winning the Virginia Pro Championship -
also in the USA - this month.
Englishman
James Willstrop rises one place to No8
in the new list, and is joined again in the top ten by England and
Pontefract club team-mate Lee Beachill, runner-up in the
Virginia Pro Championship.
Lower in the list, another Englishman celebrates a career-high
position: Peter Barker, winner of two PSA Tour titles
in 2006 and runner-up in the Oregon Open in the USA this
month, leaps two places to 17.

Ramy Romps Into Top Five In February World Rankings
Roundup from Howard Harding
Egyptian
teenager Ramy Ashour makes his world top five debut in the
new February Dunlop PSA Men's World Squash Rankings.
Far from resting on his laurels after being honoured as the PSA
Young Male Player of the Year in the World Squash Awards in
December, the 19-year-old from Cairo made further dramatic progress
in January when he won his first PSA Super Series title at the PACE
Canadian Classic, then picked up the EBS Dayton Open crown two weeks
later.
Ashour's compatriot Amr Shabana, winner of the Infor Windy City Open
in Chicago, extends his lead at the top of the new list, ahead of
Australia's World Open champion David Palmer at No2, France's
Gregory Gaultier at No3, fellow Frenchman Thierry Lincou at four,
and Ramy Ashour at five.
Australia's Anthony Ricketts, the 27-year-old from Sydney who was
runner-up in Chicago, jumps three places to No7.
Another Egyptian is celebrating a career-best ranking in the new
list: Wael El Hindi, the 26-year-old from Cairo who reached the
Canadian Classic semi-finals as 13th seed, rises two places to a
best-ever No13.

28-Dec-06:
Gaultier overtakes Lincou
in New Year Rankings
Roundup from Howard Harding
After
reaching his third successive PSA Tour final in this month's Saudi
International, Gregory Gaultier has risen to a career-high
world No3 in the new January Dunlop PSA Men's World Squash Rankings
– leaping ahead of compatriot Thierry Lincou to become the
highest-ranked Frenchman for the first time.
Gaultier has enjoyed a remarkable year – which began with a No12
ranking. After two non-PSA Tour successes - in the French National
Championships (featuring his first win over Lincou, in the final)
and the European Individual Championships
(where he won the 'closed' title for the third year in a row) – the
24-year-old from Aix-en-Provence went on to reach six PSA finals
against the seedings, and lifted the titles in the
Hungarian Open and
US Open.
Egypt's
Amr Shabana caps his best year on the PSA Tour by heading the
New Year list – moving into his tenth consecutive month as the
world's No1 squash player. The 27-year-old from Cairo beat Gaultier
in the final of the Super Series Platinum event in
Saudi Arabia to clinch his
fifth PSA crown of 2006 – an achievement which led to his receiving
the PSA Male Player of the Year award at the
World Squash Awards in
London last week.
Australia's World Open champion
David Palmer is at No2 for the 11th successive month, while
England's British Open
champion Nick Matthew retains his fifth position behind
Gaultier and Lincou.
Ramy
Ashour consolidates his status as the most improved player of
the year by reaching a best-ever No6 position.
The only teenager in the top 30, Ashour began the year at 38 in the
Dunlop PSA list – since when he has become the first player ever to
win the World Junior Championship
title for a second time, and on the PSA Tour made it to three
finals.
In the Hong Kong Open in
October, the 19-year-old from Cairo despatched Tour veterans John
White, Thierry Lincou and David Palmer to reach his maiden Super
Series final, before finally succumbing to compatriot Amr Shabana.
Ashour's success was recognised in the
World Squash Awards when
he received the PSA Young Male Player of the Year Award.
Experienced
Mohammed Abbas is another Egyptian celebrating a career-best
ranking in the new list. The 26-year-old from Cairo has risen four
places to 13 after crowning a highly successful year (which began
outside the top 20) by making it to the
Saudi quarter-finals as the
15th seed.
Australia's Stewart Boswell moves closer to the top ten to
take up the No11 position in the new list – the 28-year-old from
Canberra's highest position for more than three years.
Spanish
squash has much to celebrate in the New Year as Borja Golan
makes his debut in the top 20 to affirm his status as the country's
best ever player.
The 23-year-old from Santiago DC has amassed 14 titles from 15 PSA
Tour final appearances – including 2006 successes in the
Thessaloniki Open in Greece, the
Irish Open in Dublin, the
CAS International in Pakistan and the
Wolverhampton Open in England.

Gaultier Joins Compatriot Lincou In World Top Four
Roundup from Howard Harding
France's
Gregory Gaultier has moved up to a career-high world No4 in
the new December Dunlop PSA Men's World Squash Rankings. With
compatriot Thierry Lincou at three, two Frenchmen appear in
the top four world rankings for the first time.
Gaultier, 23, from Aix-en-Provence, has been enjoying a sensational
run on the PSA Tour since August, reaching the finals of the
English Open and
World Open and, after winning the
Hungarian Open in October, going on
to clinch the US Open crown last
month.
In last week's Warid Pakistan Open in
Islamabad, Gaultier made it through to his fifth final in three
months – where Lincou gained revenge for the defeat by his French
team-mate in Boston to win the eighth PSA Super Series event of the
year.
Egypt's
Amr Shabana maintains his lead at the top of the rankings,
celebrating his ninth month in a row as world No1. But his teenaged
compatriot Ramy Ashour is making further rapid progress in
the rankings, rising a further two places to a best-ever No7.
After reaching the
Hong Kong Open final in October, the 19-year-old from Cairo went
on – against the seedings - to make the semi-finals of both the US
Open and Pakistan Open last month.
The squash hierarchy in England has also undergone a change in the
new list, in which Nick Matthew rises two places to a
career-best-equalling No5. The 26-year-old from Sheffield, a
quarter-finalist in last month's US Open, becomes the highest-ranked
Englishman for the first time.
Victory in November's Coastal
Contacts Jericho Open in Canada has helped England's Peter
Barker move up to a career-high No19.

November 2006:
Ramy
Reaches Top Ten
Following his sensational run to the final of the Hong Kong Open,
Egypt's world junior champion Ramy Ashour sees himself
elevated to the world's top ten in the new November rankings ...

October 2006:
Peter Nicol Bows Out on a Century and a Half!
Howard Harding reports
Amr Shabana makes his mark on the new October Dunlop PSA
Men's World Squash Rankings as world number one for the seventh
month.
But more than a year before the Egyptian made his debut in the list
at 262, Britain's Peter Nicol made his entry in the world top
ten.
And today, the 33-year-old from London who retired from the PSA Tour
last month, makes his final appearance in the rankings at No6 –
marking his 150th successive month in the world's top ten!
"I
get a strange feeling when I think of this achievement – this
incredible twelve-and-a-half-year journey in squash - but it's one
of which I am immensely proud," said Nicol, who rounded off his
professional career in September when he reach the quarter-finals of
the Al-Ahram World Open in the spectacular setting by the Great
Pyramids of Giza in Egypt - the scene of his World Open triumph in
1999.
With 49 PSA Tour titles to his name and 60 months at the top of the
world rankings, Peter Nicol is one of the most successful squash
players of all-time. In March this year, he fought through a
world-class field to win the singles gold medal in the Commonwealth
Games in Melbourne, later also clinching gold in the Men's Doubles
to claim his fourth Games gold medal since 1998.
"One
of the vivid memories of my 14 years as CEO of the World Squash
Federation came on 13 November 1993," recalls Ted Wallbutton,
now the Professional Squash Association's Marketing Executive.
"I was in Doha for the Qatar International and, for the first time,
saw Peter Nicol play. His huge talent was obvious and it was no
surprise to me that he was in the top 10 just six months later.
"In those 150 months since then that Peter has graced the PSA top
10, he has shown flawless sportsmanship, great charm and effortless
wit. His amazing record is unique in Squash and outstanding in any
sport - and he has added immeasurably to the reputation of Squash
and the PSA.
Victory in the World Open sees David Palmer close the gap
behind Shabana in the October list. The second-placed Australian was
knocked out of last month's semi-finals of the Dunlop British Open
by Thierry Lincou, but stretches his lead above the third-placed
Frenchman who ended as runner up in Nottingham.
Anthony Ricketts, the Super Series Finals champion who was a
surprise first round casualty in the British Open, rises to four in
the new list, overtaking England's James Willstrop.
The biggest top 20 rise is achieved by Egypt's Ramy Ashour,
the record two-times world junior champion who reached the World
Open quarter-finals unseeded, then made it into the semi-finals of
the St Louis Open. The 19-year-old from Cairo leaps eight places
into the top 20 at No13.
The domestic rivalry between Malaysians Ong Beng Hee and Mohd Azlan
Iskandar takes an unusual step in the October list, where both are
neck-and-neck at No16. Beng Hee fought through to the last eight of
the British Open as a qualifier.
