09-Nov, Final:
Q-sourcing trophy for Finitsis
Tommy Berden reports
Steve Finitsis claimed
the inaugural Q-sourcing Squash Trophy with a four game win over
American Gilly Lane.
Both players entertained the crowd with a display of fast and
attacking squash, but it was the 25-year old from Brisbane who drew
first blood taking the first game. The world number 88 seemed to
have the upper hand in the second game as well in the early parts,
but it was Lane who responded strong to clinch the second. The third
and fourth however went the Aussie’s way as he tightened the grip on
his opponent who played his maiden European final to secure the fifth
title of his career.
Remarkably Finitsis won all of them this year. In May of this year
he claimed four straight PSA tournament victories in Australia.
Both Lane and Finitsis will now prepare for the KEAN Delft Open
2008, which takes place later this month in the Dutch city of Delft.
Finitsis is top seed for this new PSA event, Lane is seeded second.
09-Nov, Semis:
Expected Q-sourcing
final in Rotterdam
Tommy Berden reports
The final of the Q-sourcing Squash
Trophy 2008 will be an American-Australian affair as both Gilly
Lane and Steve Finitsis moved through to the final round
in convincing style.
25-year old Finitsis, seeded second in the new PSA Satellite event
in Rotterdam, proved a bit too strong for Dutch international Piedro
Schweertman, winning in straight games after 36 minutes: 11-7, 11-8,
11-7.
The event’s top seed Lane needed 10 minutes less to dispose of
Matias Tuomi (5) from Finland, only dropping 15 points in the
process: 11-7, 11-6, 11-2.
With both favourites showing good form in the early rounds, the
final shapes up to be an exciting climax to the tournament!

08-Nov, Quarters:
Thrilling victories for Schweertman and Tuomi
Tommy Berden reports
Piedro Schweertman survived a marathon match against 18-year
old Henrik Mustonen in the quarter finals to move into the semis of
the new PSA Satellite event in the Netherlands.
The 25-year old Dutch player twice fought back from a game deficit
and saved one match ball to overcome the youngster 13-11 in the
fifth and final game after 66 minutes of nail biting squash.
In tomorrow’s semi final, the first of his career, Schweertman will
face Steve Finitsis after the second seeded ‘Aussie’ had too
much firepower in his armoury for Adam Fuller from England.
The second match tomorrow does not feature a home player as Rene
Mijs squandered a two game lead against Finish international
Matias Tuomi, eventually losing 11-9 in the fifth.
Tuomi will now take on America’s Gilly Lane. The event’s
favourite had an easier passage to the semis, disposing of Bart
Ravelli, also from the Netherlands, in straight games.
08-Nov, Round One:
Seeds safely through in Rotterdam
Tommy Berden reports
All seeds moved through safely
to the quarter finals during the Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2008 in
the Dutch city of Rotterdam.
Third seeded Piedro Schweertman and fifth seeded Matias Tuomi
however had to work hard to get past the first round. Dutch
international Schweertman overcame a spirited challenge by English
qualifier Stephen Siveter, before clinching a place in the last
eight with a tight and entertaining four game victory. Tuomi also
needed four games to move through to the next phase of the new PSA
Satellite event. The Finish player dropped the second game against
19-year old Sander Kock, before restoring normal order in the next
two games.
There were no such problems though for the other six seeds as they
all went through in convincing style with America’s Gilly Lane and
‘Aussie’ Steve Finitsis turning in some clinical and impressive
performances against Dutch youngster Frank Hartkoren and club pro
Stephen Cooke.
07-Nov, Qualifying:
Eight Dutch players in draw
The main draw of the Q-sourcing Squash Trophy 2008 will commence on
Saturday afternoon in Rotterdam, recently voted the city of
sports in the Netherlands, with the participation of eight
Dutch players after Martijn Kock comprehensively moved
through qualifying earlier today at the expense of compatriot
Michael Ernst.
The 22-year old from Amsterdam dominated play from the outset and,
after a small hiccup at the beginning of the second game, never
relinquished the initiative against his 18-year old opponent.
Kock will now join his younger brother Sander and six other
fellow countrymen in the opening round of the new PSA Satellite
event, which boasts a total prize fund of $3,000usd.
The World Deaf Champion Jamie Mathews, club pro Stephen
Cooke and Stephen Siveter, all from England, also moved
into the main draw.
Whilst half of the main draw players now hail from the host country,
it is however the United States and Australia who are expected to
feature in Sunday’s final with Dutch based American Gilly Lane
and Aussie Steve Finitsis, also based in the Netherlands,
occupying the top two seeding positions.
Dutch internationals Piedro Schweertman and Rene Mijs
are seeded third and fourth respectively.
