Bernado bests Berden in Quito

Top seed Tommy Berden tumbled out of the Quito Open, losing out in a fifth-game tie-breaker to Colombia's Bernardo Samper. Samper was twice behind as Berden changed his pace to counter Samper's attacks, but the Colombian stormed back to take the fourth 11/2 before winning the tense decider.

Samper will play an all-South American semi against Mexico's Jose Angel Becerril, who also prevailed in five games after being two down to Argentinian qualifier Robertino Pezzota. After an aggressive start from Pezotta Becerril started to dictate the pace, and took advantage of the growing error count of his opponent.

Second seed Eric Galvez plays fellow Mexican Manuel Fregoso in the other semi. Fregoso played patiently and consistently to beat Jethro Binns, while Galvez won an exciting tussle against Colombia's Miguel Rodriguez.

More adapted to the environment, Galvez seemed to dominate the match, winning the first two games. When the crowd thought the match was lost, Rodriguez gave everything he had to win the third ... and he did. The fourth game was just thrilling. Rodriguez was taking risks, playing a very effective game, and Galvez had to sweat to win the game, after an exciting tie-break.

In the women's event  all four Colombian players fell as top seeds Runa Reta and Jenna Gates both moved into the last four. Reta meets the hosts' Sarycarmen Diaz, who upset fourth seed Mariana De Reyes to maintain hopes of a home victory, while Gates faces Margriet Huisman, the Dutch third seed.
