De Beers SA National Squash Doubles Championships
Johannesburg, 02-04 March 2007

Paul Atkinson of Gauteng, scored a double in the de Beers S A National Squash Doubles Championships played in Johannesburg, partnered by fellow Gautenger, Mike Tootill (who has appeared in this event since 1994!).

They defeated second seeds Rodney Durbach and Richard Castle of Western Province in the men’s doubles final and with Diana Argyle they accounted for Craig van der Wath and Farrah Fenner in five games in the mixed final.

In the men’s doubles Atkinson/Tootill won the first game 9-5 only to see Durbach/Castle race to a 7-1 lead and pocket the second game 9-2. Unforced errors by the Western Province combination allowed the Gautengers to take a commanding 8-4 lead in the third game but they could only clinch the game on their sixth game ball at 11-9. Despite a spirited fight back by Durbach/Castle from 2-6 to 5-8 in the fourth game, Atkinson and Tootill were in command as they captured their third successive national doubles title at 9-5.

The Northern Gauteng pairing of Farrah Fenner and Vivienne Doeg needed 95 minutes to subdue Pamela Dollenberg and Sharon Wakeford in the women’s doubles final, winning the title for the first time.

The mixed doubles final was a battle royal with van der Wath/Fenner trailing by two games to one, edged through 14-12 in the fourth game to level at two games all. However Atkinson and Argyle dug deep, winning the decider 9-6 to capture the title for the first time.

The championships, in their eleventh year, were played for the first time on the doubles courts at the Johannesburg Country Club.
