25th Anniversary Squash Club Santiago 2007
Santiago, Spain, 12 - 17 Nov, $31k+$7k

17-Nov, Finals:

[2] Camille Serme (Fra) bt [1] Aisling Blake (Irl)              9/2, 2/0 rtd injured
[5] Davide Bianchetti (Ita) bt [Q] Julien Balbo (Fra)         11/7, 6/11, 11/6, 11/4 (54m)

Bianchetti & Serme Celebrate Santiago Success

Italian Davide Bianchetti and France's Camille Serme celebrated title successes in the 25th Anniversary Squash Club Santiago Open in Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Fifth seed Bianchetti battled to a 54-minute victory over French qualifier Julien Balbo in the climax of the $30,000 men's event. The triumph marks the 30-year-old from Brescia's seventh PSA Tour title, but his first for more than a year.

By contrast, Serme scored her maiden WISPA title in disappointing circumstances.  The second seed from Creteil took the first game against Aisling Blake and was only two points into the second game when the Irish favourite was forced to concede the match through injury.

It was the 18-year-old European Junior Champion's ninth WISPA tournament appearance, her third final but a first title success.

Aisling explains ...

"It was really unfortunate that I got injured in Santiago - the organiser had put a lot into it in terms of media and things so felt as bad for him as I did for myself!

"Anyway, with Camille leading 4-2 in the first game I felt something like a knife pain in my left calf. I originally thought Camille had hit me with her racket as that's what it felt like, like being hit, so there was some confusion for a minute as I figured out that I couldn't put my weight on my leg.

"Poor Camille didn't know what happened! I took the three minute injury break, gave her that game then took another 90 secs and decided to see if I could give it a go for the second game. One great lob later I thought I might be able to hang in there but a standard return of serve by Camille that sailed by me put paid to that idea.

"Frustrating to say the least as we had some good rallies at the start of the match and I was looking forward to it.

"Apart from hobbling through the airport in the slow lane and taking an age to get anywhere I'm fine though, and I imagine some physio should sort it out. To be honest I'm not sure what exactly it is as there was no physio there, but I think it's a tear of some sort.

"So there you go, in the bigger scheme of things it's not that bad, still alive, etc.! "

16-Nov, Semi-Finals:

[1] Aisling Blake (Irl) bt [Q] Faustine Gilles (Fra)
        9/4, 9/3, 9/2 (21m)

[2] Camille Serme (Fra) bt Nour El Tayeb (Egy)
        9/2, 9/5, 9/7 (31m)

[5] Davide Bianchetti (Ita) bt [2] Alex Gough (Wal)
        4/11, 11/7, 10/12, 11/5, 11/4 (102m)

[Q] Julien Balbo (Fra) bt [3] Renan Lavigne (Fra)
        4/11, 7/11, 12/10, 11/8, 11/8 (55m)

"What to say after leading 11/4, 11/7 and 10/4?

"Not too many things, apart that I'm going to have trouble sleeping, and go 1,000 times in my head through those missed match balls in a row.

"I would like to retain from this match those two games and 99% of the third when I was in total control of the match, but it's now impossible to keep anything positive right after the event.

"Julien found that the ball became dead all of a sudden, and that played a role in the turn of the match. I didn't find that the bounce had changed in any way.

"It was more that I lost my way after my first match balls lost (or saved, depending which side you're on, obviously), and that I allowed him to come right back into the match, and I can only congratulate him to have hung in there when he was in a very perilous situation.

"It's not every day that one wins a match from 2/0 and 10/4 down!

"And now I think about it, with all the matches I've played in my career, I've never lost a match from that position, and after having six match balls.

"Well done to him."

16-Nov, Semi-finals:
Seeds scattered in men's semis

It was a good day for the French in Santiago as Camille Serme and Julien Balbo reached the finals.

While Serme, the European Junior Champion, was fulfilling her seeding, qualifier Balbo came from two games down and had to save six consecutive match-balls from 10/4 down in the third before finally overcoming compatriot Renan Lavigne, the third seed.

Balbo, in his fifth PSA final, will face Davide Bianchetti, after the Italian produced a second successive seeding upset in a marathon 102-minute win over second seed Alex Gough. It will be Bianchetti's 15th appearance in a final.

By contrast the women's final will see the top two seeds compete for the title, Serme facing Ireland's Aisling Blake, who ended the run from qualifying of Faustine Gilles in straight games.

Hi Fram,

I just won my match against young Nour, the Egyptian player, I'm so happy!

I knew that if I wanted to survive that one, I had to give it my best from the start.

Contrary to my earlier matches, my length was not good enough, and I also made too many unforced errors that gave her the chance to score too many times.

So, tomorrow, I need to construct my game again, as that court is extremely rewarding.

Faustine played a good match today too, and she should be proud of her tournament, congratulations to her!

15-Nov, Quarter-finals:
Qualifiers Surprise In Santiago

Qualifiers continued to excel in the 25th Anniversary Squash Club Santiago Open in Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Julien Balbo, the French qualifier who claimed an unexpected place in the quarter-finals after local hero Borja Golan retired injured during their first round match, fought back from 1/2 down to beat sixth seed Liam Kenny.

The 28-year-old from Chambery beat the Irishman in 70 minutes and now faces compatriot Renan Lavigne for a place in the final.  Third seed Lavigne beat Dutchman Dylan Bennett in four games.

There was a further upset in the men's event when Davide Bianchetti, the fifth seed, defeated fourth-seeded Englishman Joey Barrington. The Italian now meets Welshman Alex Gough, the No2 seed who despatched fellow Briton Stacey Ross.

Third seed Dagmar Vermeulen was the biggest casualty in the women's quarter-finals as French qualifier Faustine Gilles prevailed in the 22-minute clash with the Dutch player - and will now face Ireland's top seed Aisling Blake in the semi-finals.

Teenager Nour El Tayeb extended her giant-killing run in the event.  The 14-year-old qualifier from Cairo recovered from a game down to beat Czech qualifier Lucie Fialova, and will now line up against France's No2 seed Camille Serme, the European Junior Champion.

14-Nov, Round One:
Silver celebrations subdued
by Golan injury

Hopes that Borja Golan would lead the silver anniversary celebrations at his home club Squash Club Santiago were dashed when the Spanish star withdrew injured midway through his first round match.

The top-seeded world No20 faced French qualifier Julien Balbo in the opening round. After dropping the first game, Golan slipped over at 2-1 in the second game and took a 3-minute injury break. But it was clear that the 24-year-old Spanish number one was unable to move properly when he returned to the court - and conceded the match after losing the second game.

After qualifying the previous day, Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet was also hoping for an unexpected first round win to celebrate his 21st birthday. But third seed Renan Lavigne had other plans - and dismissed his younger compatriot in 55 minutes to set up a quarter-final clash with Dutchman Dylan Bennett.

There were numerous upsets in the women's event, led by Egyptian qualifier Nour El Tayeb who defeated France's No4 seed Celia Allamargot. The 14-year-old from Cairo now meets fellow qualifier Lucie Fialova for a place in the semi-finals. The Czech player upset fifth seed Milou van der Heijden.

Special in Santiago

It looks as though Club Santiago has something special lined up to celebrate its 25th anniversary ...

The $30k PSA draw is headed by Spain's own Borja Golan, with veteran Welshman Alex Gough seeded two.
