Baltazar Ferreira Wins Saskatchewan Title
Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira
claimed his third PSA title in four successive events when he upset top
seed Bernardo Samper in the final of the Saskatchewan Open at the Regina
Court & Fitness Club in Regina, Canada.
The 24-year-old Mexican, who
survived a 67-minute semi-final, battled for a further 56 minutes to
overhaul Colombian Samper in four games.
It was a remarkable climax for
Baltazar Ferreira, the second seed, who clearly thrives on the North
American circuit. Since reaching the final of
the Saskatoon Boast - also in Saskatchewan - last October as qualifier, he
went on to win the Bieber Securities Fall Classic in Winnipeg the
following month, again as a qualifier.
In his first tournament of the
New Year, Baltazar Ferreira picked up the Rochester Pro title in
Rochester, New York - and was rewarded this month by a 100-position
rise over the five months in the world rankings.

Round One:
Ernie Serediak reports
Although Andrew McDougall (Can) put up a valiant
effort, the attacking style of Bernardo Samper (Col) was to much to
overcome as Bernardo kept up a fast, furious pace to overtake Andrew to
advance to the quarter finals.
Scott Fitzgerald (Wal) battled hard and showed great form but it was not
enough to overcome the persistent, methodical game that Jorge Ferreira
(Mex) plays. Scott showed great front court heroics in the first game but
Jorge kept to his game plan. That game plan was played out in the fourth
game tie-break when Jorge advanced to the quarter finals.
Keith Pritchard played long rallies but was enable to overcome the
persistent play of Darren Lewis.
Tom Pashley prevailed over Neil Hitchins in a long fought match that
could of gone either way. Both players played a skilled game with
movement from the back to the front court. Drop shots that were very close
to the tin made the difference in the match with Tom gaining the
advantage.
Local Saskatchewan player Matthew Serediak (Can) and first year on the
PSA tour, played valiantly against co-patriot Ian Power (Can) but Ian's
experience and expertise on the court proved too much for Matthew.
Although Matthew played long and hard rallies in front of a home town crowd, Ian's finesse won out in the end.
Laurent Elirani (Fra) demonstrated his form as he advanced against Mical
Reid (Can). Although Mical staged comebacks at times during games Laurent
reverted to his game style to advance to the quarter finals.
Rob Sutherland (Wal) showed top form as he forced play to advance to the
quarter finals against Armando Olguin (Mex). Although Armando tried to
play his game Rob turned up the pace and didn't allow Armando back into
the match.
Josh Struthers (Can) who advanced through the qualifiers showed he is a
force to be contended with. His consistent, methodical play was too much
for Patrick Bedore (Can). Patrick prefers a fast paced game and before he
could adapt to Josh's style it was over. Josh may prove to be the dark
horse as he eliminated one of the seeded players.

Top Seeds Reach
Saskatchewan Final
The final
of the Saskatchewan Open will feature the top two seeds after Bernardo
Samper and Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira prevailed in the
semi-finals at the Regina Court & Fitness Club in Regina, Canada.
After
surviving a four-game quarter-final, Colombian favourite Samper despatched
Laurent Elriani in straight games in the semis, beating the third seed
from France in 48 minutes.
By
contrast, Mexican Ferreira cruised through his quarter-final match against
English qualifier Tom Pashley without dropping a game - but twice had to
come from behind in a five-game semi-final marathon before overcoming
Canadian Ian Power, the fourth seed 67 minutes.
Ferreira,
the 24-year-old second seed from Mexico City, is through to the fifth PSA
Tour final of his career - and the second of the year after winning the
Rochester Pro Open in the USA in January - while Bogotá-based Samper, also
24, is celebrating his third Tour final and looking for his maiden win.
