DISCOVER.... BRADLEY or From Australia to Malta...
On the squash tour, I always try to make you share the life of the famous players, but also the one of the not so much famous...
The PSA player you are going to know a bit more about today is called Bradley Hindle-Deguara.
Born in Australia to an Australian father and Maltese-Australian mother, Bradley just won the Australia day challenge and in impressive style by not dropping a game. He is also representing one of the "Small Nations", Malta.
And it's so nice to see him getting good results at last, after recovering from years of a crippling disease.
You were born in Australia, tell us a bit about growing up?
"Life was great as a kid growing up in a small coastal farming town of Australia. I had great open parents that exposed me to both Australian and Maltese cultures equally.
"I pretty much spent my youth in rugby league, surf life saving and squash. As a sport nerdy kid I looked up to the older athletes in the area and when I wasn’t at sport I was playing around on a farm."
Who did you learn squash with?
"I started with Kay Barclay and Lou Pastega as a junior. Then the Great Joe Shaw. Shaun Moxham took over after Joe and really opened my eyes up to the word ‘professionalism’ I actually still think he is a leader of this philosophy in the sport.
"Mike Way has now guided me for the last couple of years and really taken me forward in my game."
As you are starting your squash career, at 20, you become seriously ill for 2 years...
"I got what you call now ‘mononucleosis’, but they called it something else back then. I was young and didn’t really know what was happening to my body except I had zero energy and had constantly the flu."
Are you ok now?
"I would say the worst of it was over in 2 years but issues did linger for another 3 more. In hindsight it was the best thing that happen to me as it made learn a lot more of my body and how to look after it."
"Thou it was a testing period. My thoughts go out to anyone who has it...."
I always thought of you as Australian, and zoom, there you are, representing Malta!
Well, I had been living in Belgium and Holland since 2003 for my career, and was spending a lot of time with family in Malta.
A few years back, I spoke with Malta Squash and the Malta Olympic Committee and they were very supportive and after thinking through some details, I decided to make the change and represent Malta.
I am officially based there but spend time training in other places with other professionals. I bought a great place there in Sliema by the water a while ago, I am really happy with how everything is going.
Nice victory in that Day Challenge....
I entered the event as a warm up event for the year, and you never really know how you would go but I had a good preparation and it was great winning in front of my family and local supporters.
What do you think of the game of squash today?
The tour is getting better and more professionally structured, it still has to progress but is looking positive and I think by the next couple of generations it will be in its best position ever.
Thou unfortunately Pakistan is missing from the top ranks, I would like to see them find their place again, they have had it tough for a while now.
Also I like watching the women’s game it has come along way and I think it is amazing to watch the high quality of matches they are continually producing.
I think the game looks good for the future! | Favorite Squash Players In squash it was Geoff Hunt, the Martin family, (Rodney, Brett and Michelle), and Jahanghir and Jansher Khan. |
What’s squash like in Malta?
"Malta is small and has a close nit community, there are a couple of ‘old falcons’ still playing strong, and I have hit with a few juniors that are showing serious potential for the future.
I enjoy training there and think it has some of the best training facilities in the world.
It’s also a perfect destination for squash tourism, so for foreigners to come have a holiday and play. Its not expensive, top quality food and dining mixed with beautiful people and beaches.
You played in the last Commonwealth Games, didn't you?
Yes, and it's one of the best moment of my career. I also believe that Malta has a strong doubles team for the next Commonwealth games.
I enjoy doubles, and my partner Mick Fiteni is amazing, he is extremely talented and smart player we work really well which is one of the main factors in doubles. I can’t wait to get back on court with him in preparation for the next games.
Potential medals?
Absolutely. |
Ranking History
Squash goals and ambitions? In last couple of years I have sustained avoidable injuries so this year I want to remain injury free and just let the squash do the talking.
Just keep on improving and working on my game and its weaknesses and hopefully turning that in to results. |
