Indians dominate in Edinburgh
Cyrus Poncha reports on
finals day
Indian
squash once again dominated proceeding at the Scottish Junior
Open with 4 titles & 2 runner-ups.
Harinderpal Singh playing his last year in the juniors, had much
to cheer about when he won the Boys u19 Scottish Junior Open in
Edinburgh.
In
an enthralling final against Kelly Shannon from Canada, Harinder
displayed exceptional winners in the front of the court and
brilliant retrieving skills which was unmatched. Kelly kept the
pace of the game at a high tempo and won the second game to
level the match, Harinder came back strong by rushing to a 8-0
lead in the 3rd before winning it with easily. The fourth was
much closer but Harinder's consistence paid off to win it in
extra points. Harinder became only the second Indian to win this
title in the under 19 category after Siddharth Suchde in 2003.
Anwesha Reddy needed 29min to win her first European title and
become the only Indian to win the Girls u17 in Edinburgh. Top
seeded Kimberly had no answer to Anwesha's aggressive play who
moved her opponent all around the court.
Mahesh Mangaonkar won his first u15 title defeating Dylan Murray
in a repeat of last years under 13 final at the same event.
While playing in his first international tournament, Sandeep
Ramachandran lifted the boys u11 crown.
A clean sweep was not possible, Aparajitha and Karan lost in
straight games to Tamika Saxby and Andrew Schnell respectively.
Well done India !!!

Indians & Canadians
happy in Edinburgh
The 62nd
Scottish Junior Open started off the post-Christmas season, with
around 200 top juniors from 25 countries competing in Edinburgh.
It wasn't a great tournament for
the seeds, but the Indian party, with four titles, and the
Canadians with two will head for the BJO in Sheffield full of
confidence ...

Indians on a roll in Scotland
Cyrus Poncha reports on
semi-finals day
Unseeded
Karan Malik defied all odds to reach the finals at the
Scottish Junior Open here in Edinburgh. With the semi final stage
reached in all categories except the boys u17, Karan had to play two
matches today. In his quarter final match, Karan was up against 3/4
seed Robert Downer from England. Down by two games and having saved
a match ball in the third game, Karan rallied to level the score and
win in an exhilarating 5 games 9-10, 6-9, 10-8, 9-5, 9-5. In the
match which lasted 62min, Karan moved Robert to the front corners of
the court with his boast and delicate volley drops.
In his semi final, Karan needed another five games to defeat Arjun
Gupta from Canada. This was another hour long match with both
players keeping the ball in play and waiting for their openings.
Arjun, down 1-2, levelled the match with his sheer grit. In the
fifth Karan came on strong and did not let Arjun into the game, the
final score read 9-6, 1-9, 9-7, 5-9, 9-2. This is Karan's first
final in an International tournament.
It was certainly a happy day for Indian squash. Karan was joined in
the final by his ICL Squash Academy team mates Aparajitha
Balamurukan (Girls u15), Anwesha Reddy (Girls u17) and
Harinderpal Singh (Boys u19). Mahesh Mangaonkar from
Mumbai & Sandeep Ramachandran from Dubai also joined the
party.
Aparajitha toppled the top seed Emily Heyes from England 9-2, 9-5,
10-9. In the final, Aparajitha will meet Tamika Saxby from Australia
who has a 1-0 record against her. Anwesha and Harinder once again
put up a top class show. Both players dominated their match from the
start and never let their opponents take an advantage in the game.
Anwesha defeated Samantha Cornett from Canada 9-3, 9-5, 9-5 and
Harinder defeated Andrew Martin from South Africa 9-5, 9-3, 9-4.
Mahesh also got the better of 3/4 seed Douglas Kempsell from
Scotland in straight games 9-3, 9-4, 9-5.
Last year Ravi Dixit (Boys u15) and Mahesh Mangaonkar (Boys u13)
were the two winners from India. With six in the final fray, we are
confident to go better!!
