Three in a row for
Dan and Kasey ...
Dan Jenson and Kasey Brown both collected their third consecutive tour
titles in Somerton (well, four for Brown, but that would spoil the
headline).
Jenson,
who turned 31 this week, overcame his training partner Mike Corren in
straight games - "playing faultless squash in a superb exhibition" - to
add the SA Open title to the two he won in Naracoorte and the Barossa
Valley earlier this month.
Jenson is now eyeing off the Australian
Open next week, also in Adelaide, although with David Palmer and
Stewart Boswell in the draw he will have his work cut out to continue his
winning run.
Brown
on a roll
Twenty-year-old Kasey Brown made it four tournament wins in a row when she
beat Dianne Desira in the final - "Kasey was relentless in a close
tussle".
Brown,
originally from Taree in New South Wales, added the SA title to tournament
wins in Naracoorte, Brisbane and Perth to round off her preparations for
next week’s Australian Open.
Brown, who will meet fellow Australian Institute of Sport athlete Rachel
Smith in the first round in Adelaide, must be considered a hot favourite
for the event after her run of recent success.
After the Australian Open, Kasey heads off to Hyderabad in India for the
Qatar Airways Challenge, one of the
richest events on the women's tour. |

DRAWS &
RESULTS
|
"Yesterday
I did struggle once it went past the third game but not today. I
physically felt great and I was moving really well."
My long semi-final may have actually worked in my favour, as Mike
cruised through all his matches easily. Sometimes short matches work
against you because you don’t get enough game time."
"I'm in Boswell’s half of the draw next week, and a clash with
the world number 15 would give me an indication of where I am at the
moment, form-wise.
"I still have ambitions of getting back into the world top 10."
"I’m 31 now and if I feel good physically, I am always in with a
chance. If I’m not feeling good then I know I’m in for a tough time.
It’s all or nothing really."

"This
win gives me a confidence boost ahead of next week’s event as I was
able to counter some smart play from Dianne.
"She played really well – she changed her game plan. I was able to
adapt to it and although I lost a long first game, I toughed it out
and got through."
"I’ve been on a bit of a roll – I’ve just got t0 make sure I keep it
up."

Jenson battles into final
Top
seed Dan Jenson, seeking his third consecutive squash title on home
soil, was pushed all the way by New Zealand's Kashif Shuja in the
semi-finals at the Somerton Squash Centre.
The home favourite quickly went two
games up, but Shuja staged a fine comeback to level before Jenson held his
nerve in the fifth.
Jenson's opponent in the final will be Mike Corren, the Utah-based
Aussie who, like Jenson, hails from Adelaide. Corren ended the run of
Steve Finitsis in straight games to reach his 20th PSA final.
Jenson is looking for his second PSA Tour title in a row following his win
at the Naracoorte Open, also in South Australia, while Salt Lake
City-based Corren has also been in good form recently, capturing two
titles in Western Australia last month.
Kasey does it again ...
Kasey Brown will be looking to continue her winning form when she
takes on fellow Aussie Dianne Desira in the women's final. The
20-year-old Brown, from Taree in New South Wales, upset second seed
Melissa Martin in four games in their semi-final, while Desira beat
unseeded Donna Urquhart in five games.
Brown, the third seed, was on court for 65 minutes before accounting for
Martin, her second win over her compatriot in two weeks following victory
in the Naracoorte Open two weeks ago. On that occasion Brown won easily in
straight games but Martin put up a much better fight in Somerton and will
have gained confidence from her performance.
In the other semi-final, fourth seed Desira ended the run of Urquhart, who
had beaten top seed Amelia Pittock in the first round.
Desira will have to be in top form to take the title from Brown, who is
one match away from her third successive WISPA World Tour title. |

Kasey
Brown
"I
thought the match was over when I took the first two games and took
an early lead in the third.
"That was a big mistake. When he took the third and then the fourth
he was looking a bit better than me.
"I went down 3-1 in the fifth, but then I won nine points in a row
to get to game ball. But it was a tough match.
"Mike and I have known each other for years and are training
together during the Australian circuit. I expect it to be tough.
"I like to think I know his game pretty well, but then he probably
thinks he knows mine ..."

Finitsis Maintains Giant-Killing Run
Australian Steve Finitsis battled for 90 minutes to pull off his second
upset in two days when he beat fourth seed Simon Carruthers in the quarter-finals of the Mortgage
Choice South Australian Squash Open in Somerton, Australia.
The unseeded 23-year-old from Innisfail's surprise semi-final appearance
will guarantee domestic interest in the final. Finitsis will meet
compatriot Mike Corren, the No7 seed who ended the run of New Zealand
qualifier Sam Atkins in 21 minutes.
There was New Zealand success in the top half of the men's draw when
eighth seed Kashif Shuja upset Australian Cameron White, the third seed,
3/0. Shuja will meet top-seeded Australian Dan Jenson for a
place in the final.
The women's semi-final line-up is an all-Australian affair: Unseeded Donna Urquhart, who stunned the top seed in the first round, maintained her
winning ways in the quarter-finals with a 3/1 victory over
fellow Aussie Rachel Smith in 55 minutes. The 19-year-old from Queensland
now meets fourth seed Dianne Desira.
The other semi-final will give Adelaide's second seed Melissa Martin the
chance to avenge her shock defeat by 19-year-old Kasey Brown in the Naracoorte Open earlier in the month. Martin beat Hong Kong's fifth seed
Christina Mak, while third seed Brown brushed aside
eighth-seeded compatriot Lisa Camilleri, both in straight games. |

Seeds Suffer in Somerton
The first round of the South Australian Squash Open in Somerton saw
major upsets in both the men's and women's draws.
While
top seed Dan Jenson remains on course for a second title in two
weeks following his victory in the
Naracoorte Open, second seed Tim Manning fell to Kiwi qualifier
Sam Atkins in a fourth-game tie-break.
The other seed to fall was Aaron Franckomb, who lost out in five to
Steve Finitsis in the longest match of the day.
In the women's draw top seed Amelia Pittock suffered a shock defeat to
Donna Urqhuart, who staged a great fightback from two games down,
and now faces Rachel Smith in the quarters who produced her own
upset in beating sixth-seeded Delia Arnold.
Remaining top seeds Melissa Martin and Kasey Brown are
both in the bottom half of the draw, with their projected semi-final
meeting a repeat of the Naracoorte final, which Brown took in straight
games.
