33rd Sigma Swiss Open 2006
Geneva, Switzerland, 03-05 Mar, $4k+$4k
05-Mar, Finals:
TITLE AT LAST FOR LAUREN, OMAR TOPS JESSE
Bob Lincoln reports from Geneva

After reaching the quarter finals in 2003, the semi finals in 2004 and losing out in last year's final, England's top-seeded Lauren Briggs went one better again to claim the 2006 title in Geneva.

The 20-year-old up-and-coming Orla Noom stormed into the lead taking the first game 9/1 after a nervous shaky start from the top seed, but Lauren pulled her game together stopped the errors and took the title.

In the men's final Omar Abdel Aziz continued his fine run, taking out top seed Jesse Engelbrecht in straight games.

The Egyptian never really allowed Jesse to get a foothold in the final, playing a fast error free match.

Finals:

[7] Omar Abdel Aziz (Egy) bt [1] Jesse Engelbrecht (Zim)
  11/6, 11/2, 11/4

[1] Lauren Briggs (Eng) bt
[5] Orla Noom (Ned)
   1/9, 9/2, 9/6, 9/1

"I was pleased to reach the final not feeling tired
as I felt I had a tough draw to reach the final. I tried to keep the pace fast keeping Jesse under pressure and my short game was working well."

(formerly known as
El Iraky Omar Abd El Aziz)
04-Mar, Semis:
Top Seed Survives
Bob Lincoln reports from Geneva

Men's top seed Jesse Engelbrecht  fought off a great challenge from the adventurous Italian Andrea Capella to earn his place in the Swiss Open Final. Always behind, Andrea never gave up and pushed Jesse all the way.

El Iraky Omar Abd El Aziz won a very fast paced match against fellow Egyptian Ali Anwar Reda, who was unable to find his shots, to earn a deserved place in the final.

A special match is anticipated tomorrow between the different styles ...

Reverse angles reverse
the seeding ...

Orla NoomOrla Noom's unusual use of the reverse angle upset the number two seed Sarah Kippax in a thrilling five game match in front of a packed audience at Geneva Squash Club.

Each player took it in turn to win a game comfortably until a tight decider where the angles of Noom, the fifth seed from the Netherlands, proved to be decisive.

Top seed Lauren Briggs of England proved too strong for Ireland's Aisling Blake, who up to this stage had not dropped a game.

04-Mar, Quarters:
Egyptian Finalist
Guaranteed in Geneva

Top seed Jesse Engelbrecht squeezed past last French hope, Romain Tenant,  with a very close fought 3/0 victory, and meets Italy's Andrea Capella in the semi-finals.

Ali Anwar RedaNick Wall started strongly against Capella but had to give too much physically to keep up the pace for more than two games as the Italian took the last two games with something to spare.

An Egyptian finalist is assured, as Mohd Ali Anwar Reda, the British Junior Open U17 champion, beat Welsh hopeful Ricky Davies, who was playing in his first PSA event. An unfortunate incident sent Ricky to hospital for three stitches over his eye in the first game but he bravely returned to finish the match.

El Iraky put an end to Jonathan Hartford's run with a straight games win to set up tonight's meeting with Reda.

Unexpected opposition for
top two in Geneva ...

Sarah KippaxLauren BriggsThe top two seeds, England's Lauren Briggs and Sarah Kippax, moved comfortably through to the semi finals of the 33 Swiss Open in Geneva, but both will face unexpected opposition.

Aisling BlakeSeventh seed Aisling Blake of Ireland took out third seed Karen Kronemeyer to set up a meeting with Briggs. Karen fought hard in the first two games but seemed to lose control after losing the second 10/9.

The Netherlands' sixth seed Orla Noom  seed beat fifth seed Charlie De Ryke. Charlie took the risk of 'set one' in the second game, which probably cost her the match.

WOMEN'S DRAW

Over 35 event

Hi Framboise,

News from Switzerland. Here, all is fine for me. All the other French have lost, and they all left. I'm playing Jesse in 40 minutes, and I hope that all the training we did with Julien Balbo will come handy!

Speak with you soon ...

Harford Shocks Sam

The ever-popular Swiss Open is under way in Geneva, for the 33rd running of the event, with Friday's play witnessing a major upset as Jonny Harford took out second seed Sam Miller in the second round of the men's event.

Jesse Engelbrecht Harford came from 2/1 down to oust his club mate, and now meets Egypt's El Iraky Aziz for a place in the semi-finals.

Top seed Jesse Engelbrecht came through the first day's play unscathed, recording two 3/0 victories on his way to a quarter-final clash with Frenchman Romain Tenant - the only one of the top four seeds to reach that stage.

Hi Framboise,

I just wanted to give a bit of news from Geneva.

I lost 3/0 against Jenna Gates. It was a rather close match. I was up 7/2 in the 1st, and I was surprised to lead and to dominate, so I started to want to win the rally too soon, and made some unforced errors. I totally changed my game…

In the second, I made some “dumb” errors, got a bit better in the third by playing back to the basics (thanks Joan for the little coaching), but it wasn’t enough. With experience and perseverance, I guess I’ll get there!

Otherwise, I’m sure you’ve got the other results, and the girls, Joan and Romain will send you news soon.

Speak with you soon ...
