08-11 Mar, Chambesy, Switzerland $4k

11-Mar-07, FINALS:

O35: Mark Woodliffe (Eng) bt Olivier Sprungli (Sui)
O45: Michael Martin (Eng) bt Howard Cherlin (Eng)     9/0, 9/0, 9/4

Women: [3] Margriet Huisman (Ned) bt [4] Camille Serme (Fra)    9/7, 9/5, 9/1
Men:      [12] Steve Coppinger (Rsa) bt [1] Mohd AA Reda (Egy)    11/9, 11/2, 11/8

Coppinger carries off Swiss title

Starting from 12th seed, it took him 20 games, but South African Steve Coppinger collected his second PSA title in two months in Geneva.

Despite his earlier exertions, Coppinger had enough left and proved just too quick in the final against Egypt's top seed Mohd Ali Anwar Reda, who had reached the final without dropping a game.

In the women's final France's European junior champion Camille Serme led in the first two games, but couldn't hold on as Margriet Huisman fought back to claim the title in straight games.

Top Seeds Succumb
in Swiss Semis ...

In a dramatic semi-final session in Switzerland, the women's top seeds were both beaten in five games.

Margriet Huisman took out number one seed Sarah Kippax in an eventful match which see-sawed its way to a 3/2 result as Sarah was unable to control her short game. Margriet's more consistent game saw her through to the final.

France's Camille Serme kept up her recent run of form by beating no. 2 seed Christina Mak.

Things seemed to be going Christina's way when she 2/1 and 6/1 up, but from there she didn't score another point. It wasn't that Christina played badly, but Camille raised her game to new heights.

In the men's semis top seed Ali Anwar Reda dashed French hopes of two finalist as he maintained his run of 3/0 wins as he beat Fabien Verseille to reach the final

Reda now meets Steve Coppinger, who followed up his 3/2 win over second seed Mathieu Castagnet with another five-setter to reach his second PSA final, having taken the Buler Challenge in Hong Kong last month...

10-Mar-07, Quarters:
Coppinger sinks another seed

South Africa's Steve Coppinger continued to upset the seedings in Geneva, looking very strong as he took out the number two seed Mathieu Castagnet, dominating the fourth and fifth games as the Frenchman ran out of steam.

Fabien Verseille maintained French interest as he took out the only Swiss hope left, the much improved Andre Holderegger. The match depended on Andre taking the second game which he let slip 12-10 and after that Fabien took control.

In the Ladies the three top seeds were in cruise control in reaching the semis, although Deon Saffery did her best to upset France's Camille Serme, but a tight and ultimately decisive third game sealed the match

Over-35 and Over-45 events

09-Mar-07:
34 and counting in Geneva

The 34th running of the ever-popular Swiss Open is under way in Geneva, with all sixteen seeds progressing in the men's first round.

Stephen Coppinger emerged from two rounds of men's action as the lowest seed to make the quarter-finals.

After despatching Thomas Phipps in the first round, the UK-based South African upset another Englishman, No7 seed Neil Hitchens, in the second round and will now face France's No2 seed Mathieu Castagnet.

In another upset in the men's event, Hong Kong's sixth seed Dick Lau became the highest seed to fall when he was beaten by England's Shaun le Roux.

Milja Dorenbos staged an impressive upset in the other event when she fought back from two games behind, and from match-ball down in the third, to beat France's No5 seed Soraya Renai in the women's first round.

The 23-year-old from the Netherlands - the only unseeded player in the last eight - now faces third-seeded compatriot Margriet Huisman for a place in the semi-finals
