Kheiralla continues...
After
knocking out second seed Natalie Grainger in the Quarters
Egypt's
Engy Kheirallah took out third seed Omneya Abdel Kawy.
Kheirallah seems to be in the "zone"
- super boasts, drops and drop volleys were too much for
her fellow countryman to handle.
Top seed Vicky Botwright has yet to
drop a game after beating New Zealand's Shelley Kitchen
in 46m. After a very close first game
Botwright's tight drops and Kitchen's unforced errors
combined to make the last two games pretty one-sided.

Kheiralla upsets Grainger...
Top seed Vicky Botwright continued
her fine form making short work of Rebecca Chiu.
Commonwealth Games
medal winner Shelley Kitchen had the longest match
of the day before beating Laura Lenghorn in 4.
3rd seed
Omneya Abdel Kawy also took 4 games to overcome
Scotland's Pamela Nimmo.
The upset of the night came
from
Engy Kheirallah who took only 26 minutes to dump
2nd seed Natalie Grainger and progress to the semis.
Apr-06: 1st Round
All Seeds Progress in Houston
Top seed Vicky Botwright took the
honours in the clash of the sisters.
Rebecca Chiu overcame qualifier Manuela Manetta in 3.
Laura Lenghorn was made to work harder for her 3 game
victory over Melissa Martin whilst Commonwealth Games
medal winner Shelley Kitchen overwhelmed Sarah
Kippax.
Omneya Abdel Kawy completed another 3 game win over
Canada's Runa Reta.
Engy Kheirallah's match was the only one to go to 4
games and the quarter final line up was completed when
Natalie Grainger's opponent, Alana Miller, retired
injured in the 3rd.
Apr-05: Qualifying 2nd Round
Qualifying Complete in Houston
Runa Reta took the first match,
which was an hour and forty minutes of lets and strokes –
more than all the rest of the tournament combined thus
far. Both players opted to keep returning to the T instead
of clearing. Christina Mak's athleticism should have
carried the day but the #1 qualifier seed prevailed.
Silvia Angulo's sometimes spectacular retrieving couldn't
overcome the foot of height she gave away and the
advantages such height gives a talented player such as
Alana Miller – long strides, long reach and power.
Jenna Gates played very nice textbook squash but the lanky
Manuela Manetta had responses for it all with a
wide array of shots, good lengths and excellent
retrieving.
The scores belie the differential in talent of these two players – Tara
Mullins even had a 2 point lead in game two – but errors
and the unflappable Sarah Kippax's experience made
the difference. The one-sidedness of game 3 after game 2
was a surprise.
As it turned out, the top 4 seeds in the
Qualifier made it to the main draw.
Apr-04 : Qualifying 1st Round
Qualifying Underway in Houston
In the first match Christina Mak
justified her seeding with a solid performance,
consistently getting more pace on the ball.
Silvia Angulo made quick work of Wilma Kirsten.
In the early stages of the third match, it was hard to tell who was the
higher seed. However, after a few points, Manuela
Manetta came to form with very smart shot selection
including wonderful lobs. Manetta showed how height
can be an advantage by cutting off shots and getting to
shots with her long reach.
Tara Mullins was just too strong in the basics in
winning this match in three. While Ms. Diaz exhibited a
number of brilliant shots during the match they were too
few and far between to put together a winning game.
Sarah Kippax was just too strong, talented and fit,
though Ms. Velez played a game match trying for everything
and executing some nice winners.
