Rodriguez Celebrates First Colombian PSA Tour
Success
Miguel Angel Rodriguez became the
first Colombian to win a PSA Tour squash title when he upset
second-seeded Spaniard Borja Golan in the final of the Tortugas
Open in Buenos Aires.
The Colombian’s triumph also marked
the end of a remarkable record by 22-year-old Golan, who had won
all ten of his previous appearances in PSA finals.
Rodriguez, the 19-year-old sixth
seed, made his breakthrough in the quarter-finals of the first PSA
Tour event in Argentina for more than four years when he beat
Brazil’s third seed Rafael F Alarcon in four games.
In the semi-finals, he upset Mexico’s
top seed Eric Galvez in straight games.
But beating Borja was perhaps his
biggest success: Rodriguez had to fight back from a game down to
win
5-11 11-5 11-8 11-4 in 43 minutes to claim the $12,000 PSA title
and make his mark on squash history in Colombia.

27-Nov, Semis:
Rodriguez gets Galvez ...
now for Golan ...
The final of the Tortugas Open in Buenos Aires, the first PSA event
in Argentina for over four years, will see surprise package
Miguel Angel Rodriguez take on Borja Golan.
Rodriguez, the sixth seed from Colombia, scored another upset in the
semi-finals as he beat top seed Eric Galvez in straight games. The
young Colombian played incredible determined squash. His mind was
really strong along the whole match and he played virtually
error-free squash. The Mexican simply couldn’t keep the pace and
made too many mistakes.
In the final he faces Spanish second seed Golan, who recorded his
third consecutive straight games win of the tournament against
Australia's Bradley Hindle.
"I knew I was doing the right thing in the first game," said Hindle
afterwards, "but after that I just couldn't keep up with the pace."
Golan will be aiming to maintain his incredible record of never
having lost a final as he goes for his 11th career and fourth
consecutive PSA title.
26-Nov:
Golan aims for a straight
four in Buenos Aires ...
The quarter-finals of the Tortugas Open in Buenos Aires, the first
PSA event in Argentina for over four years, saw the end of the run
of French qualifier Yann Perrin, as three of the top four seeds
reached the semi-finals.
Perrin fell in straight games to Mexico's top seed Eric Galvez,
who now meets Colombian Miguel Angel Rodrigues after the
sixth seed caused the only upset of the round in beating Brazil's
Rafael Alarcon, the third seed, in a well-contested four games.
The other semi-final will be between Australia's fourth seed
Bradley Hindle, who triumphed in five games over compatriot Tony
James in the best match of the tournament so far, 69 minutes of
great squash which delighted the Argentinean crowd, and Spain's
second seed Borja Golan who enjoyed a comfortable win over
Andras Torok.
Should the top seeds reach the final, Golan, who has won his last
three PSA tournaments, will be defending his amazing record of never
having lost a final, and would lift his tally to eleven should
he successfully do so, while Galvez will be hoping to claim his
fourth title in his seventh appearance in a final.
25-Nov:
Home Hopes Evaporate
in Buenos Aires
The first round of the Tortugas Open in Buenos Aires, the first PSA
event in Argentina for over four years, saw the end of hopes for a
home victory as all three Argentinians exited.
Rodrigo Pezzota subsided to a 3-0 defeat after a close first game
against Mexico's top seed Eric Galvez, while brother Roberto
lost out in four games to Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez.
Galvez meets French qualifier Yann Perrin in the quarters,
while Rodriguez faces Brazilian third seed Rafael Alarcon.
The longest and most entertaining match of the day saw young Spanish
second seed Borja Golan defeat the last Argentine hope Jorge
Guttierez.
24-Nov:
PSA Tour Back in Argentina
After more than four years since the last PSA Tour squash event in
Argentina, the Tortugas Open gets underway today in Buenos Aires
with four players from four different countries joining the main
draw from the qualifying finals.
Frenchman Yann Perrin defeated Argentina's Horacio Resta and
will now face fifth seed Sabir Butt, from Canada. Egypt's Omar Abdel
Meguid overcame local player Alberto Schneider to set up a
first round clash with Australian Tony James, the No7 seed.
Argentinean Rodrigo Pezzota took 54 minutes to overcome fellow
countryman Gonzalo Miranda and will now join his brother Roberto
Pezzota in the main draw. Rodrigo meets top-seeded Mexican Eric
Galvez while Roberto takes on Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the
sixth seed.
Making his PSA debut away from his home country Spain is 22-year-old
Alejandro Garbi Caro – who dismissed Argentina's Pablo Modernell
in just 13 minutes to claim a first round berth against Hungary's
eighth seed Andras Torok.
