Sun 28th, Day Three:
Finals ...

Chris Nutley reports

Chris Fuller
(Northamptonshire) completed his rehabilitation from a long injury lay off by claiming the Tecnifibre British Under 17 title at the National Squash Centre in Manchester. The 2003 British Under 13 Champion has now put all his injury worries firmly behind him to once again top his age group. Chris enjoyed a great run this weekend beating the No1 seed Sammy Chambers (Cambridgeshire) in the Semi Finals and then No2 seed Ben Coleman (Essex) in the final. The final was a controlled and professional display by Chris who ran out a 9-2, 9-0, 9-5 winner in 51 minutes.

Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) started the event as hot favourite for the Girl’s Under 17 title and she didn’t disappoint. Kimberley was in a class of her own dropping only 18 points on her march to the final. There she met No2 seed Millie Tomlinson who had reached the final after fighting back from the dead against Katherine Quarterman (Oxfordshire) in the semi’s. Katherine had won the first two games easily and at 8-6 in the third looked to have it sewn up. However Millie had other ideas and somehow found the energy and class to fight back and clinch both the 3rd and 4th games 10-8 before easing away to win the 5th 9-3. However in the final Kimberley simply continued where she had left off and won convincingly 9-4, 9-5, 9-3 in 28 minutes to take the title which she adds to the Under 13 and 15 crowns she has already amassed during her junior career to date.

In the Boy’s Under 13 category it was to be no fairytale for Tecnifibre’s own Ashley Davies (Derbyshire). The No2 seed lost out to Joshua Masters in the Semi Final who then went on to meet No1 seed Peter Joyce (Avon) in the Final. Peter proved to be too strong and completed a comprehensive win 9-6, 9-7, 9-4 in 36minutes to claim his first title. Peter enjoyed a wonderful weekend and came through his 5 matches without ever looking like he was going to drop a single game – he has now firmly cements his position as the number one Under 13 player in the country.

Fiona May Murphy of Wales took the first title of the day with a great performance to overcome No1 seed and pre-event favourite Millie Pughe (Yorkshire) 9-4, 6-9, 9-1, 9-3 (42mins) in the Girl’s Under 13’s. Fiona becomes the first Welsh winner of a British title since Natalie Pritchard triumphed in the Under 15’s in 2004.

Sun 28th, Day Three:
Semi-Finals ...

Chris Nutley reports

Chris Fuller (Northamptonshire) showed that he has now fully recovered from his long lay off from squash with a determined win over No1 seed Sammy Chambers in the first Boy’s Under 17 Semi Final.

The 2003 British Under 13 Champion lost the first game but then turned up the pressure and ran out a comfortable 3-1 winner. In the final he now meets No2 seed Ben Coleman (Essex) who defeated Nick Hopcroft (Surrey) in 3.

The top two seeds in the Girl’s Under 17s made it through to the final but in very differing fashions. Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) powered through her semi against Harriet Ingham (Surrey) looking every bit the No1 seed with a cool 3-0 win.

In contrast Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) had to fight back from the dead against Katherine Quarterman (Oxfordshire). Katherine won the first two games easily and at 8-6 in the third looked set to move on in to the final. However Millie had other ideas and somehow found the energy and class to fight back and clinch both the 3rd and 4th games 10-8 before easing away to win the 5th 9-3.

In the Boy’s Under 13 category it was to be no fairytale for Tecnifibre’s own Ashley Davies (Derbyshire). The No2 seed had played excellently yesterday in his victory over Ritchie Fallows (Essex) but couldn’t repeat that level of performance against 3/4seed Joshua Masters (Kent), with Joshua winning a competitive encounter 3-1.

Peter Joyce
(Avon) started the event as favourite for the crown and his progression to the final has been both polished and professional. His Semi Final victory over Brian Harvey (Warwickshire) was never in doubt and he took it 3-0 to move one step closer to his first British title.

The Girl’s Under 13 Final will be contested by the top two seeds, Millie Pughe (Yorkshire) and Fiona May Murphy (Wales). They both lost the opening games of their Semi Finals against Eleanor Lake (Gloucestershire) and Lucy Pallett (Warwickshire) respectively before pulling back to take 3-1 victories.

Sat 27th, Day Two:
The Business End ...

Chris Nutley reports

The Tecnifibre British Under 17/13 Championships stepped up a gear today as we approached the business end of the tournament.

In the Boy’s Under 17 event yesterday’s hero Ray Nevin (Lancashire) couldn’t live up to Friday’s performances and bowed out easily 3-0 to No5/8 seed Nicholas Hopcroft (Surrey). Nick then moved on to the quarters where he defeated Robert Downer (Hampshire) in 4. In the Semi Final Nick will face Ben Coleman (Essex) who came through a very scrappy quarter against Josh Saysell (Gloucestershire) 3-2 after 80 minutes of bad tempered squash in what was the last match of yet another long day.

Chris Fuller (Northamptonshire) looks to be emerging as the man to challenge the top 2 seeds after dispatching both Ben Rodgers (Devon) and Charles Sharpes (Surrey) to set up an exciting Semi Final match with No1 seed Sammy Chambers (Cambridgeshire). Sammy didn’t have it all his own way today, only sneaking through with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Ted Jeal (Kent) after 64 minutes on the all glass court at the National Squash Centre in Manchester.

The only upset in the Girl’s Under 17’s was caused by 9/16 seed Rebecca Quiney (Gloucestershire) who defeated 3/4 seed Emma Wardle (Surrey) in R3. Emma was struggling with her ankle and was forced to retire at 2-1 and 4-1 down. However this shouldn’t detract from what was an excellent performance from Rebecca who deserved her Quarter Final berth. Unfortunately that was where it ended for Rebecca with a 3-0 defeat to 3/4 seed Harriet Ingham (Surrey). No1 seed Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) swept into the Semi’s with the minimum of fuss and with the loss of only 10 points in her three games so far. In the bottom half of the draw Katherine Quarterman (Oxfordshire) overcame Julianne Courtice (Gloucestershire) in the quarters to set up a Semi Final clash with No2 seed and two times British Champion Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire).

Boy’s Under 13 top seed Peter Joyce (Avon) also made it through to the Semi Finals smoothly where he meets 3/4 seed Brian Harvey (Warwickshire). The other Semi Final sees No2 seed Ashley Davies (Derbyshire) play Joshua Masters (Kent) after they dispatched Ritchie Fallows (Essex) and David Fumpson (Merseyside) respectively in the Quarters.

In the Girl’s Under 13’s No2 seed Fiona May Murphy (Wales) survived a huge scare in her R3 match with Alicia Mead (Warwickshire) before winning 3-2 and moving on to beat Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria) in straight games to reach the Semis where she meets Lucy Pallett (Warwickshire). No1 seed Millie Pughe (Yorkshire) had to fight back after losing the first game of her Quarter Final against Lauren West (Leicestershire) before she booked her Semi Final spot against Eleanor Lake (Gloucestershire).

Day ONE

Fri 26th, Day One:
An early start in Manchester

Chris Nutley reports

The Tecnifibre British Under 17/13 Championships got under way at the unearthly time of 9.00am this morning at the National Squash Centre in Manchester.  The event has attracted 170 of the very best juniors from around the country, all in search of a coveted British title.

The early rounds have seen no real upsets with all the top seeds progressing without any real scares.  Top seeds in this year's Boys' Under 17 Championships are Sammy Chambers (Cambridgeshire) and Ben Coleman (Essex), both of whom will be looking for their first national title.  After a long injury layoff, 3/4 seed Chris Fuller (Northamptonshire) is now back to full fitness and will be keen to push the top two seeds all the way to add to the Under 13 title he won in 2003.  Completing the top four line-up is three times National Champion James Earles (Yorkshire) who should prove hard to beat.

Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) heads the Girls' Under 17 seedings and is hot favourite to add to the Under 13 and 15 crowns that she has already amassed in her junior career.  She is scheduled to meet No2 seed and reigning Under 15 Champion Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) in Sunday’s final.

In the Under 13 Championships Peter Joyce (Avon) and Millie Pughe (Yorkshire) are the No1 seeds, but will face determined competition from the likes of Ashley Davies (Derbyshire) and Fiona May Murphy (Wales).

The Championships involve a heavy schedule, with matches running from 9.00am on Friday 26 October through to the finals which are scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday 28 October.  Any visiting spectators will be welcomed free of charge.

Tecnifibre became the headline sponsors of the British Junior National Squash Championships following the conclusion of a three-year agreement between England Squash and Smash Sports Limited, distributors of Tecnifibre in the UK & Ireland.

Nevin ousts Eyles ...

The Tecnifibre British Under 17/13 Championships was dramatically brought to life this afternoon when Manchester’s very own Ray Nevin fought back fabulously from 2 games down to defeat the No3 seed and three times National Champion James Earles (Yorkshire) in a 75 minute thriller.  Ray, a member of Nick Taylor’s Squash Academy was unseeded for the event but he was quietly confident prior to the start and commented that he had a great draw and felt that he could cause problems for all the seeded players in his half of the tournament.  Ray now moves on to meet 9/16 seed Nicholas Hopcroft (Surrey) who he beat recently in an England Squash Grand Prix.  Could Ray become the first unseeded player to win the Under 17 crown – if today’s performance was anything to go by who knows!

Elsewhere in the Under 17 Boy’s event No1 seed Sammy Chambers (Cambridgeshire) and Ben Coleman (Essex) notched up two comfortable wins apiece.  Both Under 17 Girl top seeds, Kimberley Hay (Northumbria) and Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire) looked at ease, winning without the need to find second gear.

Things start to hot up tomorrow with two further rounds, concluding with the Quarter Finals in all four categories as the big guns start eyeing the British titles on offer ...
