Lee gets his
revenge ... at last
Chris
Nutley reports from Sportcity
A fantastic weekend of squash concluded with Surrey's Joe Lee
claiming the British Boy's Under 17 crown on the all glass court at
The National Squash Centre in Manchester.
In a repeat of the 2004 British Under 15 Final Joe avenged his
defeat at the hands of Adrian Waller from Herts to claim his first
national title.
Waller put in a determined display but Joe proved too strong as he
recorded a 3-1 win and justified his No1 seeding and English No1
ranking.
Another one for Lust ...
Victoria Lust won the Girl's Under 17 title to add to the
Under 13 title she won in 2001. After struggling in the first game
Victoria Bell got herself back into contention, however it was not
to be her day and Lust went on to win 3 games to 1.

Earles shows his class ...
Yorkshire's James Earles won a high quality Boys Under 13
Final played in great spirit by both players. James showed why he is
clearly the No1 Under 13 player in the country as he won in straight
games.
U13 title for Lemom
Essex's Sophie Lemom claimed the first title of the afternoon
after she defeated Lucy Townley of Cheshire in the Girl's Under 13
Final. Sophie always looked likely to succeed in this closely fought
contest between the English numbers one and two.

Early Start for the Girls
Chris Nutley reports from Sportcity
After two frantic days at The National Squash Centre in Manchester
the semi-finals got off to a slower start this morning with both
Girl's Under 17 top seeds moving easily into the Final.
Victoria Lust ended Natalie Pritchard's hopes of adding the
Under 17 title to the Under 15 crown she took in Nottingham in 2004.
In the other match Victoria Bell proved far too strong for
Natalie Coombs, taking just 17 minutes to complete her victory.
The Girl's Under 13 semi-finals also went to seeding with Sophie
Lemom and Lucy Townley now set to fight it out for the
British title.
Hot favourite for the Boy's Under 13 crown, James Earles
justified his billing and moved into the final with minimum fuss
where he will meet No2 seed David Wardle.
Contrasting Boys U17 Semis ...
The two Boys Under 17 Semi Finals could
not have been more different.
No1 seed Joe Lee strolled into the final with a convincing
3-0 over Alistair Mutch.
In the last semi-final of the morning session Adrian Waller
took a two game lead before Neil Cordell embarked on an unexpected
comeback.
He took the third 9/4 before saving match ball in the fourth and
taking it into a deciding fifth game.
This time it was Adrian who dug deep and finally ended Neil's
resistance after 71 minutes and moved into the final.
Adrian how has to regroup and compose himself to face Joe Lee later
this afternoon. |

Pretty much to seeding
for the semis ...
Chris Nutley reports from Sportcity
Neil Cordell (Yorks) appears
to be back to his best as he demolished the 3/4 seed Thomas Marley
in 23 minutes and must now be fancying his chances as the event
moves into its final day at the National Squash Centre.
Natalie Pritchard had
to withstand a spirited fight back from Kimberley Hay (Numb) before
booking her place in tomorrows Semi-Finals. After taking the first
two games with considerable ease she suddenly found herself in a
tough battle. Kimberley found her rhythm and took the third 10/9.
The fourth was just as close but Natalie finally triumphed 10/8
after saving two game balls to take it 3 games to 1.
Alistair Mutch continued his impressive run with a
comprehensive 3-0 win over Michael Harris. Before the match
Alistair's mum told us that he liked the all glass court and felt
really comfortable playing on it. Following the match this had
altered to 'he absolutely loves this court' which was obvious to all
those who saw the match.
The seeding for the Under 13 categories proved to be spot on
with all top four seeds in both the Girl's and Boy's progressing to
contest tomorrow's semi-finals. The only player not to win 3-0 was
Jemma Ockwell who, after taking a 2-0 lead easily lost the next two
to Hannah Davies (Wales) to take the match into a decider. However
Jemma fought back to claim the match and take her place in the
semis.
Victoria Bell halted the
Welsh march into the semi-finals with a controlled and professional
display as she stopped Bethan Williams in under 25 minutes. The
Welsh contingent had had a great day until that point with Natalie
Pritchard and Alistair Mutch both taking semi-final berths. However
a third spot was not to be and it was Bell progressing on to meet
Natalie Coombs (Som) on Sunday morning.
In the last match of the day Adrian Waller (Herts) looked
to be cruising in his match against Alex Ingham but at two games to
love Alex found his second wind and fought back to level at two-all.
However in the final game normal service was resumed and Adrian
triumphed 9/2 in the fifth to book his semi-final place.

Down to the quarters ...
The Girl's Under 13 went to seeding with the top eight
safely through to the quarters. The Boy's Under 13's saw two of the
expected quarter finalists fall in round three. Declan Osborne
(Beds) defeated 5/8 seed Rory Challenger (Wales) 3-0 whilst Oliver
Wilson (Oxon) another 5/8 seed was swept aside by Greg Mason
(Wales), again in straight games.
Michael
Harris (Devon) arrived in the Under 17 Quarter Finals
comfortably and will now come up against Alistair Mutch
(Wales) who took out Richard Underhill (Notts) in straight games.
The bottom half of the draw went to seeding with Neil Cordell
(Yorks) set to meet Thomas Marley (Warks) and Alex Ingham
(Herts) set to play Adrian Waller (Herts) who has lost just
13 points in 3 matches so far.
In the Girl's Under 17 Championship Natalie Coombs (Som) had
to dig deep to beat last year's British Under 13 winner Millie
Tomlinson (Derbys) who yesterday defeated Irena Critchley (Dorset).
After being soundly beaten in the opening game Natalie used her
experience and greater strength to record a 3-1 win over Millie.
Coombs now faces Harriet Ingham (Surrey) who eased past Holy
Cox (Oxon) 3-0. In the final sector of the draw Bethan Williams
(Wales) overcame Katherine Quarterman (Oxon) to set up a Quarter
Final tie with No2 seed Victoria Bell (Cumb). Victoria had
to come from behind twice before finally dispatching Tessa Healey
(Wiltshire) 3-2.

Seeds Move on in Manchester
Chris Nutley reports from Sportcity
In the Girl's under 17 category No1 seed Victoria Lust (Beds)
overcame a slow start to defeat a determined Scarlet Sutcliffe
(Yorkshire) 3-1 to move into the Quarter Finals where she will meet
Chloe Marshall (Oxon) who beat
Jane Allman (Surrey) 3-0. The second Quarter Final will see two
times British Under 15 Champion Natalie Pritchard (Wales) play
former British Under 13 Champion Kimberley Hay (Numb) after they
both eased into the quarters will no real problems.
Top seed Joe Lee (Surrey) took his place in the Boy's under 17
Quarter Final with a composed 3-0 win over Adam Murrills (Cheshire).
Joe now faced Simon Roach (Avon) who caused the first real upset of
the day with a deserved 3-1 victory over 5/8 seed Sam Wileman
(Yorkshire).
All under 17 Q-F will be played on the magnificent all glass court
that saw Anthony Ricketts claim the British Open title 12 days ago.

Top Level Junior Squash
In Manchester
England Squash will present top level junior squash in Manchester
this weekend when the British Under 17/13 Championships
take place at the National Squash Centre. The event will see the top
juniors from around the country converging on Sportcity in search of
a coveted National title.
Top seeds in the Boys' Under 17 event are Joe Lee (Surrey)
and Adrian Waller (Hertfordshire). Joe will be looking to
avenge his defeat to Adrian in the 2004 British Under 15 final and
claim his first National title. The Girls' Under 17 category is
headed by former U13 Champion Victoria Lust (Bedfordshire)
and Victoria Bell (Cumbria). However they are likely to be
pushed all the way by two-times British Under 15 Champion Natalie
Pritchard (Wales) starting as the No3 seed.
James Earles (Yorkshire) will start as hot favourite to claim
the Boys' Under 13 title, with David Wardle (Surrey) the No2
seed. The Girls' Under 13 event is set to be highly competitive,
with Sophie Lemom (Essex) and Lucy Townley (Cheshire)
seeded to meet in Sunday's final.
"The event has attracted over 170 entrants in total and the National
Squash Centre, complete with its state-of-the-art all-glass court,
will provide the ideal setting for one of England Squash’s premier
events," commented Chris Nutley, Competition & Events
Manager.
"As
part of England Squash’s commitment to creating a safe and
child-friendly environment in which young people can play squash, we
have a close relationship with the National Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children. NSPCC has been chosen as our
nominated charity for our national junior events this year - a
proportion from each entry fee for these events will be donated to
NSPCC, in recognition of its unique and vital contribution to child
protection," added Nutley. |
Drama in 2004
Last season's Championships were full of drama with No1 seed Chris
Tasker-Grindley (Gloucestershire) requiring an hour's injury break
during his semi-final against James Snell (Devon). After it looked
like Chris’s dream had ended he returned to court with a
heavily-strapped ankle and not only hung on to win his semi but went
on to claim his first National title with a commanding and
comprehensive 3-0 victory over No2 seed Tom Pashley (Sussex).
Deon Saffery (Yorkshire) put on the display of her junior career so
far to overcome the hot favourite Rachel Willmott (Sussex) to claim
the Girls' Under 17 title. Rachel was looking for her 7th National
title but Deon proved too strong on the day and took a competitive
match 3-1.
The Under 13 events were won by Nicholas Hopcroft (Surrey) and
Millie Tomlinson (Derbyshire). Nicholas Hopcroft defeated his county
colleague and No1 seed Charles Sharpes while Mille Tomlinson also
defeated the No1 seed, Harriet Ingham (Surrey).
The event runs from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 October at The National
Squash Centre in Manchester and any spectators will be welcomed free
of charge. |
