Forexx Valkenswaard Open 2007
12 - 14 Jan, Valkenswaard, Netherlands, $6k

14-Jan, Final:
[3] Omar Elborolossy (Egy) bt [2] Sherif Moustafa Kamel (Egy)   11/5, 11/4, 11/2 (43m)

Elborolossy the deserved winner
Tommy Berden reports

Omar Elborolossy claimed the Forexx Valkenswaard Open title in convincing style. In the final of this new PSA Super Satellite tournament the 31-year old Egyptian beat his compatriot Sherif Moustafa Kamel in straight games. The 22-year old tried everything, but couldn't manage to break away from the constant pressure that the crowd’s favourite applied. With great shots Elborolossy got the many spectators excited as he raced away to the 13th PSA title of his career. After 43 minutes of high class squash the Egyptian was able to collect the trophy and 105 valuable world ranking points.

Before the tournament Elborolossy was seen as the hot favourite to win the title and he managed to fulfill these expectations. The former world number 14 was out of the game for one and a half years due to a career threatening knee injury, but started his comeback in August of last year during the Al Ahram World Open in his hometown. Now five, months later, he looks to be back at his old level, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if we see the friendly and ever smiling Egyptian back where he belongs soon, in the top 20.

The tournament couldn’t have wished for a better champion!

14-Jan, Semis:
[3] Omar Elborolossy (Egy) bt [Q] David Barnett (Eng)         11/5, 11/4, 11/3 (24m)
[2] Sherif Moustafa Kamel (Egy) bt [4] Scott Arnold (Aus)    11/8, 11/7, 11/9 (45m)

All-Egyptian final in Valkenswaard
Tommy Berden reports

The final of the Forexx Valkenswaard Open 2007 will be an all-Egyptian affair. The 31-year old Omar Elborlossy will take on 22-year old compatriot Sherif Moustafa Kamel, in tonight’s final between experience and youth.

The tall Elborolossy had no problems in reaching the final. The former world number 14 who was forced to retire with a knee injury 18 months ago needed 24 just minutes to beat  surprise semi-finalist David Barnett. The very quick Kamel had a tougher time, even though he also managed to win in straight games. 45 minutes of high quality squash was needed from the Egyptian ‘’touch player’’ to take out Australian Scott Arnold.

13-Jan, quarters:
Barnett continues
giant killing run
Tommy Berden reports

Local interest ended in the Forexx Valkenswaard Open when Piedro Schweertman was defeated by Sherif Kamel. The left handed Dutch player, who qualified for the main draw before beating Bader Al Hussaini in the first round, went down in straight games against the second seeded Egyptian. Schweertman offered good resistance, but the talented Kamel proved too strong. Kamel will now take on fourth seeded Australian Scott Arnold, who downed Arthur Gaskin from Ireland in four games.

In the top half of the draw David Barnett continued his giant killing run. The English qualifier knocked top seed Andras Torok out of the tournament in a marathon match that went the full distance. At the end of the match Barnett kept his cool better than the Hungarian player and moved into the semi finals. In tomorrow's showdown he will take on Egyptian Omar Elborolossy. The 31-year old ‘’magician’’, who is making a (strong) comeback after a long injury break, needed 40 minutes to send Mathieu Castagnet back to France.

13-Jan, round one:

Schweertman causes upset
Tommy Berden reports

Piedro Schweertman caused a major upset during the Forexx Valkenswaard Open 2007. The Dutch squash pro, who went through qualifying to get into the main draw, shocked Bader Al Hussaini from Kuwait in the first round of this new Super Satellite event: 11/7, 11/5, 11/1.

In the quarters Schweertman will take on second seeded Egyptian Sherif Moustafa Kamel, who dispatched  Jago Nardelli in three quick games. Schweertman’s compatriot Tom Hoevenaars, also a qualifier, nearly made it through to the last eight. The talented 19-year old took the first two games from Mathieu Castagnet, but couldn’t sustain the pressure and lost in five games against the Frenchman. Castagnet will now face the tournament favourite Omar Elborolossy, who had no difficulties in beating Scottish qualifier Stuart Crawford.

Tom’s elder brother Niels, the third Dutch player in the draw, had a bad day. The 'wildcard' went neck and neck with his opponent Arthur Gaskin in the first game, but wasn’t able to threaten the Irish men in game two and three. Gaskin plays fourth seeded Australian Scott Arnold next. Arnold took out Marton Szaboky from Hungary in three games. At the top of the draw top seed Andras Torok made it safely through to the quarters. Torok only needed 30 minutes to overcome Egyptian Mohammed Elkeiy. The Hungarian player will now face David Barnett, the qualifier who surprised Luke Margan from Australia, seeded fifth.

Omar top seed for Forexx
Tommy Berden previews the event

Starting on Friday January 12th the Forexx Valkenswaard Open 2007 will get under way in the Dutch province Noord Brabant. During this professional event for men, rated as a Super Satellite event by PSA, players from 11 different countries will compete for valuable world ranking points.

The organizers are happy to welcome back Omar Elborolossy to the PSA Tour. The 31-year old Egyptian, a former top 20 player for many years, had to retire one and a half years ago due to serious knee problems. However, the extended rest period worked miracles for Elborolossy’s knee, who started his comeback in August 2006 during the Al Ahram World Open. Now, a few months later, the friendly ‘’giant’’ has already moved up to position 99 on the world ranking and is hoping to win his first PSA title in Valkenswaard since his return to competitive squash.

While Elborolossy is seen by the experts as the favourite for the title, it won’t be easy for the third seeded Egyptian to go home with the trophy. The entry list shows many young and hungry talents, who are gearing to prove themselves during the PSA event in the Netherlands. In particular Sherif Kamel, Luke Margan, Scott Arnold, Mathieu Castagnet and Patrick Gaessler are expected to put up a spirited fight.

The tournament in Valkenswaard also features many Dutch players. Niels Hoevenaars received a wildcard for the main draw and will face seventh seeded Irish men Arthur Gaskin in the first round. Eight other national top players, featuring Tom Hoevenaars, Sebastiaan Weenink, Rene Mijs and Piedro Schweertman, will have to battle through qualifying to join their compatriot in the main draw.

The Forexx Valkenswaard Open 2007 takes place in squash center Topsquash Valkenswaard from January 12 until January 14. Matches will start daily at 13.00 hours.
