Victorian Open 2007
24-26 Aug, Wangaratta, Australia

Fifth Victorian title for White
Andrew Dent reports

Cameron White upset top seed Mike Corren to claim his fifth Victorian Open squash title at the Wangaratta Squash Club on Sunday.

The Geelong-based White is now second only to the legendary Geoff Hunt on the all time winners list at the Victorian Open following his straight-games win over Corren.

The title was White’s second state open this year – he took out the South Australian Open in late June – a good return in a year when he has taken a step back from the professional tour.

In the women’s event, Queensland’s Lisa Camilleri justified her top seeding with a straight games win over Victorian junior Kimberley Bessell.

Camilleri was given a scare by Bessell, who raced out to an 8-0 lead in the opening game before receiving what she claimed was a bad call.

The youngster then appeared to completely lose her concentration as Camilleri stormed to victory.

Corren and Camilleri
headline Victorian Open

Andrew Dent reports

South Australian Mike Corren and in form Queenslander Lisa Camilleri headline the Victorian Open squash championships in the rural city of Wangaratta this weekend.

Corren and Camilleri have both been in good form of late. The 33-year-old Corren has taken a swag of satellite titles in New Zealand recently and last month won the Australian Closed Championship in Melbourne.

Camilleri has made five semi-finals this year, including at the Australian Open, and broke through for her maiden main tour title at the City of Perth International in May.

Defending champion Cameron White will provide Corren’s main challenge, although the field has been boosted by a number of overseas players and promising youngsters.

Melbourne-based Sri Lankan Navin Samarasinghe, Korea’s Joong-Won Hwang and Pakistan’s Imran Khan head the international field, while the younger brigade will be led by Victoria’s Steve Robinson and Aaron Fyfe of New South Wales.

Camilleri’s main danger looks certain to be three-time champion Dianne Desira, with juniors Sarah Cardwell and Kimberley Bessell out to upset their elders.
