WHAT A PRESENCE …
WHAT AN ABSENCE
One
thing is sure, one cannot ignore Robert Edwards. I know
he has a few
vehement critics, but also hundreds of
devoted admirers, supporters, and friends. I for one,
am one of the latter.
Robert has been supporting me, and obviously SquashSite, loudly and
publicly at the four corners of the globe, and also in the
background of tournaments.
His knowledge of protocol, his calm in
the storm, his understanding of human nature, his diplomacy, his
ability to make you believe that everything is going to be fine as
you are slowly sinking away, has made him
a true saviour, and a great support, both during and between events.
As I told him many times, I will not accept his retirement, although
he is allegedly doing so in the most beautiful country in the world,
mine. We need him too much.
There will be other Technical Directors, other presenters, of
course. But there will only ever be one
Voice of Squash. Mr Robert Edwards.

A quick summary ...
After
an amateur life in tennis and squash in Wales I was asked by Adrian
Davies to manage his career as a professional player on the PSA tour
(I was to manage Chris Robertson, Peter Marshall, Ahmed Barada,
Cassie Jackman, Paul Johnson, Del Harris and others).
This led to me agreeing with Gerald Leeke to form and manage the
Leekes Welsh Wizards who would perform in the British league. A
wonderful era that included great opponents like Lambs and Cannons.
We won it twice and the team won the Western Mail / BBC team of the
year award in Wales.
Then there were six Leekes Classics which I was the tournament
Director for - followed by three British Opens held in Cardiff.
After the first Leekes Classic I was approached by Trevor Marshall -
a Canadian promoter based in the Caribbean Islands.
Trevor - who remains a friend to this day - rang me and said
"whatever you are doing, finish it, because you are the Voice of
Squash and I have been looking for you for ten years."
Thus started my life on tour presenting and commentating ...
and the rest is history, finishing on a
high at the World Open in Bermuda.
Maybe there will be a book sometime in the future with loads of
stories of the tour - funny & sad …
