13-Jan-05:
WELSH STARS BACK TO
BATTLE ON HOME SOIL
Lynette Evans reports
The best in squash talent will this
weekend take to the glass courts at the Welsh Institute of Sport in
Cardiff as they battle for the silverware at the Welsh Closed
Squash Championships (14-16 January 2005).
Wales’ number one female player, Tegwen Malik, will be
looking to challenge for her first accolade of 2005 and – with
history on her side – it appears as though yet another Welsh Closed
title is well within her grasp.
The Swansea girl, 29, became the youngest player ever to have won
the title when she first stepped up in the competition at 17 years
old. The Sports Council for Wales Elite Cymru star has remained
undefeated in the event ever since.
Malik - seeded number one and 25 in the world - is favourite to
sweep aside her first round opponent, Lynne Davies when the curtain
rises on the competition on Saturday.
She said: “I always look forward to competing on home soil. It will
give me a good opportunity to see how much I’ve improved in recent
weeks and to put into practice all the skills I’ve been working on
under the watchful eye of my coach, Chris Robertson.”
Malik will be hoping for valuable match practice ahead of her first
WISPA tour competition of 2005.
The Welsh girl is seeded number four for the
Kuala Lumpur Women’s Open (1-6
February) and will be hopeful of a comfortable progression through
to the second round as she faces the unseeded Dianne Desira from
Australia in her first match.
The Welsh charge in the men’s competition will be led by Welsh
numbers one and two Alex Gough (Based in Fleet) and Gavin
Jones (Maesteg).
