Grainger retains
Weymuller title
Fiona Geaves reports
Shelley Kitchen took her amazing form from last night's win against
Rachael Grinham into the final to win the first game with some
scintillating front court exchanges in the last few rallies to win
11-8.
But Natalie Grainger began to enforce her game, controlling the T
and taking Shelley in short whenever she could - there was a mix of
winners and errors, but the more the match went on the less errors
there were from Natalie.
Shelley fought hard to try and contain Natalie, but by the fourth
Natalie was now on a rampage, her body language looked awesome, she
was now in her stride and her infamous backhand drop and volley
drops were now in full flow, not one error in this game which she
took with the loss of only 1 point to defend her title and become
The Weymuller Champion for 2008.

US number one Natalie Grainger moved one step closer to
retaining her Carol Weymuller title as she overcame third seed
Vanessa Atkinson in the semi-finals at Heights Casino in Brooklyn to
reach her third successive Weymuller final. There she will meet
fourth-seeded Kiwi Shelley Kitchen, who beat top seed Rachael
Grinham - the 2006 Weymuller champion - in straight games.

07-Nov:
Top four reach Brooklyn semis
Fiona Geaves reports
First on court tonight was Shelley Kitchen and Dominique
Lloyd Walter. Dominique started the first game off very solidly
by keeping the ball very tight and deep, with the occasional working
boast to stretch Shelley to the front of the court. She also tried
to slow the pace of the rallies down which gave her extra time on
the ball, and she stayed very patient, as she did last night against
Kasey Brown.
Shelley, noticing the danger, suddenly picked up the pace of the
ball, this suddenly became easier for her to as Dominique definitely
lost her length, many of her drives were now falling in the service
box area where Shelley took advantage with exceptionally strong
attacking drives to the back as well as low hard kills straight and
crosscourt. Domique now found herself on the wrong end of many of
the rallies. From 3-0 up Dominique found herself 8-3 down in one
hand, Shelley kept up the pressure and took the first game 11-4 in 7
minutes.
Shelley started the second game in the same fashion racing to a 5-0
lead, finally Dominique found a deeper length as she did in the
beginning of the first game and clawed her way back to 4-5. The
crowd were now being treated to some great rallies as both players
were trying to work the other around the court as much as possible,
both girls retrieved brilliantly. Shelley served at 10-8 to take the
second but Dominique saved two game balls before Shelley took the
game 11-9 in 13 minutes.
Shelley once again started better in the third, keeping up the high
pace and like the second took a 4-0 lead. Dominique tried to slow
the pace down but now Shelley was looking very confident and her
drives stayed crisp and accurate and she took the third 11-4 in just
over 7 minutes booking her place in the semi final.
''I
was pleased with the way I played tonight. I settled into the match
early and created opportunities. I am looking forward to my match
tomorrow and very happy to be in the semi."

"Shelley played very well tonight and never let me settle. She put
me under pressure for most of the match. Disappointed to have not
done better tonight but pleased to have made it to the quarters."
Natalie Grainger and
Jaclyn Hawkes fought all the way in the their first game, this
was a battle of Natalie trying to play at a fast pace and Jaclyn
trying to slow things down. Jaclyn had two game balls but Natalie
held on to sneaked it 13-11. Natalie kept up this fast pace holding
the T with power drives and volleys pinning Jaclyn into the back of
the court, loose balls were now being executed superbly into the
front of the court. Jaclyn just couldn't stop Natalie from playing
her game and Natalie took the next two games 11-7 11-3.
"It
was great to win tonight after a tough loss against Jacs in the
World Open a couple of weeks ago. I worked to make openings and keep
the ball tight, and managed to wear her down in the end."
No.2 seed Rachael Grinham
took complete control of her match with Annelize Naude.
Rachael held the ball as she usually does, keeping Annelize on the
back foot for most of the rallies. She hunted down loose balls from
Annelize with attacking Volleys which never allowed to Annelize to
settle taking the match in three in 18 minutes.
"Great
to be back here in Brooklyn. I felt I played really well tonight, I
moved well and felt totally comfortable on the court."
"My fans were quiet tonight! Not so much to cheer about tonight,
Rachael didn't allow me to play my game. Off to explore the City
now!"

Latasha khan took the first two games against No.3 seed
Vanessa Atkinson.
Latasha did play well in these first two games but was gifted by far
too many unforced errors by Vanessa. For Vanessa to have any chance
of getting back into this match, she needed to dramatically cut out
the unforced errors and begin playing with more patience. To her
credit she did, and levelled the match 2-2.
Momentum was now on her side, she created the openings with patience
and her confidence suddenly appeared, she began to take the ball in
short with superb precision, boasts and drops were now just above
the tin rather than just clipping the tin and she took the final
game 11-5 in 8 minutes.
"In
the first two games Vanessa just made a lot of mistakes.
"In the next three games she picked up the pace and cut out the
errors."

"You'd
think after 23 years of playing squash I'd have learned something!
"Glad to get through though. She played great in the first two
games, I just hung in there and hoped for the best."

06-Nov:
Round One in Brooklyn
Fiona Geaves reports
Unseeded Latasha Khan doubled domestic US interest in the
quarter-finals of the Women's Carol Weymuller Open when she upset
Mexico's sixth seed Samantha Teran in the opening round at Heights
Casino in New York.
The 35-year-old from Seattle stemmed a fight back by Teran to win
11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 4-11, 11-7 and record her first ever victory over
the Mexican. Khan will now face third seed Vanessa Atkinson for a
place in the semi-finals.
Atkinson, the former world number one from the Netherlands,
recovered from a game down to beat her English Pontefract club-mate
Lauren Siddall 6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10.
England's Dominique Lloyd-Walter also secured an unexpected place in
the last eight after breathing difficulties forced Australia's Kasey
Brown, the fifth seed, to concede the match with the score standing
at 5-11, 11-9, 14-12.
Natalie Grainger leads US hopes in the event as she attempts to
reach the final for the third year in a row. The second seed from
Washington defeated Irish qualifier Aisling Blake 11-4, 11-5, 11-9
and will now face New Zealander Jaclyn Hawkes.
"I felt I played well, got a good length and this resulted in many
opportunities to take the ball into the front of the court - which I
love to do," explained Grainger after her first round win.

05-Nov:
Qualifying complete in Brooklyn
Fiona Geaves reports
Suzie Pierrepont defeated Carolyn Russell 11-6 12-10
11-3, a match which was marred by both players failing to clear the
ball sufficiently enough, resulting in far too many lets causing
numerous disruptive rallies. Suzie now plays No. 4 seed Shelley
Kitchen in the main round.
"That
wasn't pretty, I think both our movement conflicted which was a
shame, as it makes it hard for the ref and doesn't look good for
spectators."

"Suzie
played a great game, she is a super player and displays an excellent
presence on the court. Her pace was extremely hard for me to deal
with, I hope she plays well in her next match."
Aisling Blake defeated
Amelia Pittock 11-8 11-6 11-7 and now plays No.2 seed Natalie
Grainger.
"I
knew I had to play a patient game, Amelia volleys anything loose, so
I knew I had to keep it off her racket and keep the ball tight and
deep, as well as moving her around as much as possible.
"I was really happy to win in three and look forward to playing
Natalie tomorrow."
Lauren Siddall defeated
Karen Kronemeyer 11-3 11-8 11-6. Karen's style of play tonight
was very hit and miss, there were some shots that were impossible
for Lauren to retrieve yet alone read, but this resulted in far too
many unforced errors as Karen was all out for going in short at the
wrong time. Lauren did extremely well to ride the storm and keep to
her patient game plan, so as long as Lauren kept the ball tight and
was patient it was pretty much inevitable that Karen would make the
mistake. Lauren now faces No. 3 seed Vanessa Atkinson.
"It was a strange and
somewhat slow pace, I knew I had to keep it tight and off her
racket, as she would go for so many shots which sometimes were hard
to read. I knew I had to be patient and chase everything down."

"I felt I played well and really enjoyed the game, but today she
played better."

Manuela Manetta defeated
Alana Miller in the match of the tournament so far. This was
always going to be a tough affair as these two have had many battles
in the past. The first game was contested all the way to the wire as
Alana took it 11-9, it was an extremely high paced first game with
Alana controlling the T a lot more than Manuela, as well as
controlling the pace of the match. Alan continued on from her match
the previous night by taking a strong position on the T with
punishing drives to the back followed up by aggressive and well
timed volleys into the front. This continued in the second and from
5-5 Alana really took control and raced away to an 11-5 victory.
In the third, Manuela tried to change the pace of the rallies,
slowing balls down and getting wider cross courts to take Alana off
the T, this ploy worked and she took it 11-8. The fourth was the
real battle, and it went to 10-10 where Alana had two match balls,
these were saved by Manuela who eventually took the game 13-11.
Manuela really was starting to find her momentum and get comfortable
with her game plan, slowing the pace down here and there as well as
playing better weighted attacking lengths putting more pressure on
Alana. Manuela seemed to suddenly find more time on the ball giving
her more opportunities and options to put a tiring Alana under more
and more pressure. She then took quick control of the fifth racing
away to a 5-1 in no time at all, by this time the young Italian
looked very relaxed and could see the winning post in sight and went
on to take the final game 11-4.
"I
felt frustrated in the first two games as I didn't feel as though I
was playing the right game, I didn't feel relaxed which was probably
why I was not playing the way I wanted to.
"When I slowed myself down and starting placing the ball better I
felt more in control of the rallies. I am very happy to get through,
especially after saving two match balls.
"I
felt I played very well in the first two games, I pressurized her
well on the backhand side waiting for the loose ball that I could
chop in short. In the third and fourth she picked up the pace and I
felt myself lose control of the rallies.
"I really put so much energy into the fourth, having two match balls
that I couldn't close out left me very flat for the beginning of the
fifth."

A Fine Function
Well done to the girls for introducing themselves at the function at
the Casino after the matches one by one.
I know they would hate me for asking them to do this, but the
members love this sort of thing, as they get to know the players
personalities, and yes there were many jokers in the pack that
created a lot of laughter by all present.
Aisling Blake gave us an impromptu demonstration of an Irish Gig,
Vanessa Atkinson and Karen Kronemeyer did a double act. Suzie
Pierrepont didn't need the steps to stand on that everyone else did
to be seen! Dominique Lloyd Water remembered a 27-0 defeat to Fiona
Geaves many years ago, now why would she want to do that?
A great night was had by all the Casino members, so a big thank you
to the WISPA girls for being such great sports.
