Whakatane title for Shuja

New Zealand's Kashif Shuja took out the title at the Asset Finance and Easy Loans Bay of Plenty Open in Whakatane.

The kiwi number one claimed the third PSA Tour title of his career, after a thrilling victory over Australian Jason Mudge in the final.

Shuja grabbed the early advantage with a narrow victory in the opening game, before Mudge bounced back to grab the next two, to move within one game of his first ever PSA title. However, Shuja picked up the pace in the fourth and fifth, playing some sublime winners in the process, to take out the match in 69 minutes.

Meanwhile, Shelley Kitchen claimed the women's event, beating New Zealand teammate Joelle King 9-5 9-2 9-3 in the final.

The players now head north for the Auckland Open at the North Shore Squash Club next weekend.

Trans-Tasman final
in Whakatane

A trans-Tasman battle will decide the title winner at the Asset Finance and Easy Loans Bay of Plenty Open in Whakatane.

Australian Jason Mudge will take on New Zealand number one Kashif Shuja in the final of the PSA Tour event tomorrow, after both won their semiifinals in straight games.

Mudge was too good for fellow Aussie Simon Carruthers, cruising to an 11-8 11-1 11-3 victory in just 36 minutes. Shuja had a sterner test against second seeded Australian Cameron White, but eventually prevailed in a superb match, winning 11-9 11-9 11-10 (2-0).

The final is at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.


 

Meanwhile, New Zealand teammates Shelley Kitchen and Joelle King will do battle in the final of the women's draw. Kitchen is through after a 3/0 victory over her sister, Trina Moore in the semis, while King advanced after beating Kathryn Austin 3/1.

The women's final is at 1:50 tomorrow afternoon.

Aussies dominate

Australian players dominated the quarterfinals at the Asset Finance and Easy Loans Bay of Plenty Open in Whakatane.

Cameron WhiteThree of the four semifinalists at the PSA Tour event are Australian, with second seeded Cameron White leading the charge into the last four. White made short work of compatriot Steve Finitsis in the quarters, strolling to victory in 35 minutes.

Fellow Aussies Jason Mudge and Simon Carruthers are also through, although Mudge had to endure an 82 minute battle to account for New Zealand's Martin Knight in four games.

The only non-Australian in the semis is New Zealand number one Kashif Shuja, who took 40 minutes to dispose of American Julian Illingworth in straight games.

New Zealand's Martin Knight caused a major upset in the opening round of the PSA Tour's Asset Finance and Easy Loans Bay of Plenty Open in Whakatane.

Knight knocked Australian top seed Timothy Manning out of the tournament, with a thrilling victory in five games. The unseeded kiwi took the first two games, before Manning fought back to claim the next two to level the match. The Australian then looked set to take the match at 7-3 up in the decider, before Knight reclaimed the dominance to close out the victory 11-9.

Fellow kiwi Campbell Grayson also made it through to the quarterfinals after a surprise win over third seeded Wai Hang Wong from Hong Kong. Grayson has cruised to an 11-6 11-6 11-3 victory in just 27 minutes.

The remaining six seeds are all safely through to the last eight, including New Zealand number one Kashif Shuja, who downed kiwi qualifier Graeme Wilson in straight games.

Bay of Plenty Qualifiers


Kiwi players have grabbed three of the four qualifying spots available in the opening round of the Bay of Plenty Open in Whakatane, New Zealand.

After a first round bye, Sam Atkins cruised through his qualifying finals match against Australian Jacob Lohrisch, winning in just 20 minutes.

Fellow kiwis Josh Greenfield and Graeme Wilson also made it through to the main draw, joining Japan’s Yasunori Ishiwata who beat New Zealand's Michael Bill.
