15-Sep-07:
WISPA Challenge
hits Buenos Aires
The first WISPA Challenger event, organised by the Circuito
Femenino de Squash (Female Squash Circuit), has just concluded
in Argentina. Some of the best female players from Argentina and
South America -such as Luz Etchechoury, 2006 South American
champion; Antonella Falcione, Argentinian Number 1, and the
Brazilian and current South American champion, Thaisa Serafini
- gathered at Club Ciudad in Buenos Aires to ensure
top-level competition.
The quality of the squash in the quarterfinals promised exciting and
competitive semi-finals. However, there were no surprises, as top
seeded Thaisa Serafini and Argentinean Number 1 Antonella Falcione
made their way to the finals beating their opponents (Cecilia
Cerquetti and Luz Etchechoury) in straight games.
On Sunday, Falcione and Serafini offered an afternoon of
entertainment and quality squash for the crowd. Antonella led the
first game and managed to take it 11/7 with some nice, delicate
drops. The second game proved tougher for the Argentinean, who
started to feel tired and couldn’t keep up with the pace of the
Brazilian. Serafini won the second game narrowly 11/9.
From
then on it was all attack from Thaisa, managing to take the third
and fourth game with no major difficulties (11/4 and 11/5). After 35
minutes of high-quality squash, the Brazilian Thaisa Serafini
became the champion of the first WISPA Challenger in Argentina.
The WISPA Challenger is a huge step in the development of female
squash in South America, which comes (not surprisingly) just after
the WISPA promotional tour last June. The awards ceremony took place
in the Panamericano Hotel in Buenos Aires. |
