"It's
nice to be in a WISPA final for the first time. It's a nice squash
club, people are very friendly and especially thanks to the
championship director, Fred, organising the great tournament in
"Club des Pyramides".
"I was quite relaxed when I was playing Laura. I won 3-0 but there
were a lot of long rallies.
"She is a strong player. She just came back from injury so I had
to really focus and be patient during the match.
"It's also my first time I met her in a tournament, it's nice to
play new people that I never play it before.
 |
"It's
always a pleasure to play at the Pyramides. The club, the
organisation (especially Fred, my friend), the people are all
fantastic. I played here last year and would be delighted to
return every year to such a fun welcoming club and tournament.
"Today I played a fitter, more patient player who deserved her win
... much too patient for me !!
"I am very happy to be back playing, having sport much of the last
five months rehabilitating from two knee operations, my first
WISPA tournament back.
"Well done Elise, but even greater congratulations to Fred and all
the organisers of this fantastic tournament. See you next year."

"Just
a few words to say how glad I am about my match against Isabelle.
Although I feel she still must be recovering from the Jetlag, I
was able to reach my primary objective, enjoy my squash and play a
good match. I got some nice shots in, and I fought until the end.
"I know she is still one notch above, and boy did she made me feel
it when she speeded up the pace in the middle of the second … I
hope she’ll go until the end of the tournament, anyway, that’s
what I wish for her!
"I’m very glad of this tournament at the Pyramides. It has been a
very good experience. Thanks to the organisers, and to all the
people that have been supporting me."

"Catching
up with you from France this time, where I’m in the final of the
Pyramide.
"My first match against the English player Lauren Selby was not
too hard although my legs felt very heavy from the flight. Not
easy to plunge straight into another tournament after a victory in
Toronto…
"The second match against the Egyptian Amnah was more difficult. A
second game won 10/9, a bit asleep, but got the mental push to win
the game still. Egyptians are never easy to play as they always
try to end the point as soon as possible…
"In the semis, I had to work hard against Camille, especially in
the second. I was not precise enough, she used it to her
advantage, but then, I was able to speed up a bit to still win
3/0, 9/2 in the third.
"I’m going to rest well for my match against Elise tomorrow, she
plays very well, and I need to be at my best…"

French Finalist Guaranteed
Philippe Signoret reports from Port Marly
There
was a large crowd at Le Club des Pyramides for tonight's
quarter-finals, a just reward for the work Fred Dumont has
put into organising this tournament, and hopefully an
encouragement to others to undertake similar ventures.
In the first pair of matches Soraya Renai and Camille
Serme started at the same time, but in different spirits.
Soraya started the match with her foot injury in mind, and with
the firm intention of not making it worse. She was a little
inhibited in her first game against Ireland's Laura Mylotte,
but as is always the case, once she relaxed, with no expectations,
she started to play some good squash and some lovely winners to
take the second game.
Laura stepped up the pace in the third and fourth, making Soraya
work harder. Once again, with the French girl still being on the
road to recovery after recent injuries, she took few risks as
Mylotte advanced to the semi-finals.
Camille was facing Eman El Amir, responsible for Celia
Allamargot’s early exit in the previous round. From the outset it
was clear that Camille was not as on form as yesterday, making
some tactical errors and struggling to find her length as the
Egyptian took the first game, her 50-minute match on the previous
evening being to blame most certainly.
A faster pace in the second saw Camille's game improve as El Amir
started making errors, and although the European Junior Champion
was still not at her best she took the second 9/2. Camille played
her best squash of the match to take the third by the same score,
and although she started the fourth well she fell into the usual
trap of not locking out her game. Several match balls went begging
as the Egyptian started to play some good winners to reduce the
gap, but two strokes were enough to take Camille into the
semi-finals.
Not her best match, but encouraging that she can still win when
not playing well, and her recent physical improvement is obvious.
Daniela Schumann surprised everyone by taking the first
game against second seed Elise Ng with some beautiful shots
and finishes, but couldn't maintain that form as the Hong Kong
player took the next three games.
At the same time Isabelle Stoehr was meeting Amnah El
Trabolsy, for the third time. When they met in Egypt it was a
hard fought four game win for Isabelle and a straight three in the
British Open in September. Despite some good play and clever shots
from Amnah, it was another 3/0 win for the French champion tonight
despite a lapse in concentration in a close second game.
If today saw a rare Franco-French quarter-final encounter,
tomorrow promises an even rarer all-French semi-final. A pity that
Isabelle and Camille couldn't be in opposite halves of the draw,
but at least a French finalist is guaranteed ...

22-Feb, Round One:
Three French in
Port Marly Quarters
Philippe
Signoret reports

There was a good level of women's squash in Port Marly tonight as
three French women reached reached the quarter-finals of a
WISPA event for probably the first time ever ...
The Franco-French match between Soraya Renai and
Charlotte Delsinne was over quickly. Soraya seems to have
recovered from the foot problem that forced her to retire from the
French Nationals, while Charlotte, coming up against a French
opponent for the third tournament in a row, was hampered by a back
problem as she lost in straight games. Soraya now meets fourth
seed Laura Mylotte with no pressure on her ...
At the same time Celia Allamargot took on qualifier Eman
El Amir, and the anticipated festival of shots and winners
didn't fail to appear as the the veiled Egyptian upset the
seedings to move quickly into the quarter-finals, where she will
meet European Junior Champion Camille Serme.
Camille prevailed in the longest match of the day against Belgian
Annabelle Romedenne, winning a close first game, attacking
well in the second but making too many errors as Romedenne
took the third game. Camille cut down on the errors and played
some good winners to take the fourth, but will need to improve her
game tomorrow when she meets El Amir.
Maud Duplomb found little joy against second seed Elise
Ng, who found Duplomb's attacks a little predictable, and the
Hong Kong player now meets German Daniela Schumann for a
place in the semi-finals.
France's number one Isabelle Stoehr, fresh from her victory
in Toronto, wasn't troubled by her jetlag as she won quickly
against Lauren Selby, and will face Egypt's Amnah El
Trabolsy in the quarters.
So, some good matches in prospect for tomorrow with two
France/Egypt clashes to look forward to ...
