French make the quarters:
results and pool standings
In
the first round of matches on the final day of pools, France
clinched a place in the quarter-finals for the first time ever, with
a 2-1 win over India. Individual finalist Camille Serme got the
French off to a flying start, then Coline Aumard sealed the last
eight place with a 3/2 win over Surbhi Mishra.
France
then met New Zealand tonight to decide the group C winner
with the Kiwis coming out on top.
Hosts
Hong Kong are assured of a good chance of reaching the semis,
after winning their group D deciding clash against Malaysia
3/0 - both are in the quarter-finals.
The USA clinched a place in the last eight when, after losing
to Egypt in the morning, they beat Australia 3/0 in the
evening session.
England and Canada won their final matches to take top
spots in pool B.

08-Aug, Day Two:
Canadians produce the only upset ...
No
upsets or scares in the first batch of matches on Day Two, with USA,
Egypt, New Zealand, India, Germany and England all recording
scheduled wins. In the evening session France and Hong Kong recorded
victories over Switzerland and South Africa respectively, to put
themselves in good shape in pools C and D.
Tenth-seeded
Canada, who so nearly upset second seeds England yesterday, went one
better today as they beat Germany, seeded seven, to put themselves
in great shape for a quarter-final berth.
Jackie Moss, who just missed out yesterday, clinched the win for
the Canadians after Laura Gemmell had set the scene with
another upset win, this time over Sina Wall.
The quarter-final lineups will be decided in tomorrow's matches,
with pool winners rewarded by matches against runners-up from other
pools.
 **STOP
PRESS - the approaching Typhoon means that some of tomorrow's
morning matches will be delayed until the afternoon.
In the words of French coach Philippe Signoret:
"I already had four tornados with me, and now a typhoon's on its way
too!" |
07-Aug, Day One:
England & Egypt tested
on Day One
The team event got under way with wins for the top two seeds, but
both Egypt and England dropped a game as Australia
tested the favourites dropped games in both today's matches, against
Australia and South Korea, with Alia Balbaa and Heba El Torky
surprisingly losing as both matches went the distance.
Tenth seeds Canada came very close to
creating a stunning upset against England, as Laura Gemmell
won at top string for the Canadians to level the match before
Kimberley Hay brought the second seeds home with a tense 3/2 win
over Jackie Moss in 82 minutes. Normal order was restored later in
the day as England trounced Japan 3/0.
Sixth seeds France had no trouble in disposing of newcomers
China, dropping just two points over the three matches, while
defending champions Hong Kong enjoyed a comfortable first
outing against the Netherlands, as did third seeds
New Zealand over India. |
STATE OF PLAY
after Day Two:
Pool A:
Egypt will expect to beat USA to
clinch the group, leaving the Australia v USA match to decide second
spot.
Pool B: Canada's last match against Zimbabwe should yield a
win, and Germany have to upset England to force a three-way tie.
Pool C: France will hope to clinch their place in the last
eight in the morning, leaving a showdown against New Zealand to see
who wins the pool.
Pool D: Hong Kong and Malaysia are already through, they meet
to decide top spot. |

World Junior Team Champs
attract new nations
China, South Korea and Zimbabwe will make their
debuts in the Hoe Hin White Flower Ointment World Junior Women's
Squash Championships 2007 in Hong Kong in August.
The biennial event, in its 12th edition since 1985, is being staged

favourites and defending champions Egypt in the final in Belgium.
The 18 nations will be led by hosts and title-holders Hong Kong, and
include five-times champions England, three-times champions
Australia, double champions Egypt, and New Zealand, Malaysia,
Netherlands, USA, Canada, South Africa, France, Germany,
Switzerland, India, Japan - plus championship newcomers China, South
Korea and Zimbabwe.
