Men's World Junior Team Championships 2008
02-07 Aug, Zurich, Switzerland                         Individual

07-Aug:
Pakistan take team title...

It was the last day in Zurich, with all the teams playing for their final positions (except for China, who finish their first outing in 31st place).

In the final Aamir Atlas Khan got second seeds Pakistan off to the perfect start as he avenged his loss to Mohamed El Shorbagy in the individual final, and when Shoaib Hassan beat Karim Abdel Gawad in straight games the title was Pakistan's for the fourth time.

England justified their third seeding as the beat India 2-1, but the Indians will be delighted with their best-ever fourth finish. With just the final to go all the other positions are decided, and it was a tough final day with all the playoffs from 3rd down to 20th all going the full distance.

Seventh seeds Germany won the play-off for fifth place, beating sixth seeds Malaysia 2/1 to record their best finish since 1988. And in the seventh place play-off, tenth seeds Canada fought back from a match behind to upset fourth seeds France to end a four-event sequence of eighth-place finishes!

Local hero Nicolas Mueller claimed his sixth successive individual win in the team championship for Switzerland - this time beating South African Thoboki Mohohlo in straight games - but the hosts lost 2/1 to South Africa in the play-off for 13th place.

Czech Republic achieved the best finish of the four countries making their debut in the championships by beating Spain in the play-off for 19th place. Guatemala and Ecuador took 24th and 25th places, respectively, while fellow newcomers China - fielding a squad of 15 and 16-year-olds - ended in 31st place.

06-Aug:
Top seeds through to team final ...

It will be top seeds Egypt and Pakistan who contest tomorrow's World Junior Team final after contrasting semi-final victories in Zurich.

Second seeds Pakistan eased past surprise semi-finalists India, dropping just one game in the process, while top seeds and defending champions Egypt overcame England, seeded three, in a match that went to the decider.

Adrian Waller came from 2/1 down - and from 2-7 down in the fifth - to give England the lead, but individual champion Mohamed El Shorbagy levelled for Egypt, leaving it to Khaled Khalifa to clinch the tie in the decider against Alex Ingham.

"He had just that little bit extra of fitness and patience," said an observer. "Ingham played his heart out, but was beaten by a slightly better player."

Elsewhere Germany put themselves into the 5/6 playoff with a 2/1 win over fourth seeds France.

Vikram Malhotra gave the perfect start when he dispatched Australian Mathew Hopkin in straight games. Vikram was aggressive and hit perfect lengths throughout the match. pulled it back for the Australians defeating Aditya in a keenly fought 4 games.

In the second match, The Australia no. 2 Jacob Alexander started aggressively and did not give Aditya a chance to get into the match. Aditya being 2 -0 down gave the Indians a glimmer of hope when he clawed his way back from 3-7 in the 3rd game. However, he was unable to hold on in the 4th game and lost 3-1.

In the decider, Ravi Dixit played flawless squash to seal the fate of the Australians. Ravi was in an uncompromising mood and he steam rolled his opponent 3-0

Indian team at Rheinfall
Cyrus Poncha reports

The idea of having the matches at different venues was unique and well appreciated by all. India along with seven other teams played at Winterthur.

The organisation was perfect and Arno Singer (our host) ensured all was taken care of.

After the matches and dinner Arno took us for a 30min drive to Reinfall. It was truly spectacular - the pictures don't do it any justice.

India got off to a fine start in the team championships. India in Pool E has been seeded 5th along with USA, Netherlands and Venezuela. Our first match in the team championships was against Venezuela. For this match Vikram Malhotra our no. 1 player was rested for the coming matches. The 3 players fielded performed creditably against much weaker oppositions.

Results:
Aditya Jagtap bt Daniel Prato 9-0, 9-0, 9-0;
Ramit Tandon bt Wilfredo Arcia 9-2, 9-0, 9-0;
Ravi Dixit bt Alejandro Saurez 9-1, 9-0, 9-1

Tomorrow India plays Netherlands in the morning and USA in the evening.

India top the pool

India topped their pool at the 15th World Junior Men’s Squash Championship in Zurich after victories over Netherlands (3-0) and USA (2-1) yesterday.

In the morning session, India had their second comfortable victory defeating Netherlands 3-0. No player was ever under any threat and this was a good warm up match for the evening.

Results Vs Netherlands:
Ramit Tandon bt Michael Ernst 9-4, 9-0, 9-0
Vikram Malhotra bt Rick Penders 9-0, 9-0, 9-0
Aditya Jagtap bt Tim van der Pluijm 9-0, 9-0, 9-0

In the evening the final Pool match against USA was indeed a close encounter. Ravi Dixit gave the perfect start defeating Thomas Mattson in straight games. Ravi was in control of the game from the beginning and did not give a chance to his opponent to get into the match.

Vikram played an outstanding match against USA no. 1 Todd who has defeated Vikram on 2 prior occasions in junior events. Losing the 1st game tamely Vikram clawed his way back to level the match, the 3rd game was a cliff hanger with the both players working very hard and having chances at 8-8. Vikram clipped the top of the tin twice at that moment to give the momentum to USA. The 4th game was well fought but Todd held his nerve to win the match and level the tie 1-1.

In the deciding tie, Aditya started aggressively and raced to an 8-1 lead against one of the quickest players in this tournament. Unfortunately it was a short lived joy as Alex fought for every point and picked up every ball that was thrown at him to win the game 10-8. It was a splendid effort from Alex and he continued picking up some excellent shots the entire match. Aditya won the second but lost the third. Aditya know to be a determined fighter showed us his character once again. With the scores level at 4-4, Aditya controlled the T with splendid shots to the front and back with intense pressure thus forcing the errors out of Alex. Aditya took charge and won the game. His momentum continued in the fifth racing in one hand from 2-2 to 7-2. The lead was too huge and Aditya continue to play aggressively to win the match and the tie for India.

Results Vs USA:
Ravi Dixit bt Thomas Mattson 9-4 9-6 9-3
  Vikram Malhotra lost to Todd Harrity 1-9 9-6 8-10 6-9 68m
  Aditya Jagtap bt Alex Domenick 8-10 9-7 6-9 9-5 9-3 78m
