31-Aug-06:
Al Ahram Draw ... made in Giza

After the completion of qualifying at the Cairo Stadium, it was off to Giza for the live TV draw for the Al Ahram World Open.

Only two places were known - defending champion Amr Shabana and 2002 champion David Palmer, at the top and the bottom of the draw. For the rest it was wait and see.

For once, many players will have been hoping to see their name come out against England's fourth-seeded James Willstrop - not because they thought they could beat him, but because they knew the former world junior champion had already withdrawn due to illness.

As it happened, the lucky recipient was Ramy Ashour - the current world junior champion ... what a match that might have been.

Another former junior champion, Karim Darwish, was drawn against compatriot Wael El Hindi, and they will do battle under the pyramids tomorrow. In fact the top half of the draw is stacked with many of the home favourites, and two all-Egyptian quarter-finals is a possibility.

Down at the bottom end, it's the Australians all together, with Palmer, Anthony Ricketts and Cameron Pilley in close proximity, with Stewart Boswell as a potential semi-final opponent for one of that trio.

After several early-round clashes last year, France's Thierry Lincou and Gregory Gaultier can't meet until what would be a repeat of the English Open final, both taking on qualifiers in the first round.

England's Peter Nicol, playing in his last event, starts his campaign against Graham Ryding, the Canadian who put Nicol out at the quarter-final stage of the 2004 World Open.

Had Willstrop been able to play, he could have been facing another second round clash with his Pontefract training partner Lee Beachill, but should Beachill overcome qualifier Borja Golan he will face Ramy Ashour.
