Atwater Cup 2011:  [ HOME ] Kobayashi ] [ King ] Grinham ] Videos ] Reports ]

Focus on Joelle

Joelle King, the world number 15 from New Zealand, has been basing herself at The Atwater Club for the past few seasons, using Montreal as her overseas base.

She’s been in a training phase for the last six weeks like many of the WISPA girls getting ready for the Atwater, Cayman and Texas events.

Glen Wilson (Atwater’s Head Squash Professional) caught up with Joelle.

Q. Can we confirm your engagement and to whom?

A. Yes, Ryan Shutte from South Africa

Q. How did you meet?

A. He stalked me for weeks before we started going out ...............

While we are waiting on the answer to the next question a little argument breaks out about how they met and who asked who out first !

Q. When and where are you getting married?

A. Cambridge, New Zealand, December 2012

Q. How has your build up been to this next block of events?

A. Training's been going well. I am chomping at the bit now to get going.

Q. Do you feel any added pressure playing the first event at your overseas club in Montreal?

A. NO! I’m a home girl so I like the support of the home crowd behind me.

Q. What do you focus on when you have three big events in a row?

A. I mainly think about keeping my mind and body as fresh as possible and to stay as focused as I can.

Normally there are only two events in a row so three is a bit more challenging but I am well prepared both physically and mentally so I’m looking forward to the next three weeks.

Q. You are seeded 3 in Montreal, no 1 qualifier in Cayman and no 5 seed in Texas. What do you hope to achieve with your performances over the next three weeks?

A. I am hoping that the hard work over the past 6 weeks has paid off and with it some good performances and results moving me closer, if not into, the world's top 10.

Q. Where to after Texas?

A. Straight to Perth, Australia with Ryan to attend my brother's wedding and to spend some fun in the sun with my family.

Good luck from your Atwater support team ...  www.joelleking.com
