17-Feb-09: Jonah Makes PSA Comeback -
In TV Commentary Box
Jonah Barrington, one of the greatest players ever to grace a
squash court, has been lured out of retirement to provide the
commentary for the Professional Squash Association Super Series TV
programming.
Since
being the game’s dominant figure of the sixties and seventies, when
he won a then record six British Open titles, Barrington has become
a highly-rated coach. Chief Squash Coach at the prestigious
Millfield School for more than 20 years, the Englishman has nurtured
a number of Tour stars at his Jonah Barrington Squash Academy –
including his son Joey Barrington, who has reached 24 in the world.
"One of the areas of TV that we haven't looked at for some time is
the commentary,” explained PSA CEO Alex Gough. “We are looking to
try a few new people out, but in Jonah's case it is a case of
bringing him back after a long sabbatical.
“He is a legend of the game and has a fantastic and recognisable
voice that I am sure the viewers will enjoy."
Barrington’s distinctive and informed commentary will first be heard
in the PSA coverage of the first Super Series event of the year, the
JP Morgan Tournament of Champions which was staged at the
internationally-renowned Grand Central Terminal in New York.
Barrington is delighted to be back behind the microphone: "Having
been on the outside of the game for a period, I was still aware of
how the sport was progressing and have obviously been following Joey
and the top of the game.
“It's great to be involved again at a time when professional squash
is so competitive - with any number being capable of winning, and
the depth and contrast of styles being so great. These are very
exciting times for squash," added Barrington.
Eddie deals for Sixteen Grand & spanks the Banker
Nottingham's
Eddie Charlton (world #152) was a contestant on Channel 4's
Deal or No Deal from 21st Dec '08, playing his game on 13th Jan '09.
Although
he lost the top £250,000 box early, he built up a good board, and at
the five-box stage was offered, for the second time, £16,000 (a
figure chosen by the banker based on what guest Emma Beddoes said
was the prize money of a first-round loser at Wimbledon).
After a good think Eddie said "Deal", then proceeded to wipe out the
three highest-value boxes to score a spectacular win over the banker
- his next offer was a mere £160.
Eggheads Squash England Girls
England's top five squash players took$on the Eggheads on BBC2, but sadly proved no match for the UK's quiz maestros. With
the Eggheads on an unbeaten run of 55 shows, "Squash the Egg" stood
to win £56,000 had they won.
The head-to-head rounds didn't go well for the girls. Alison lost
2-0 to Daphne on food and drink and they went 2-0 down as Vicky lost
on an Entertainment category tie-break to Judith. Jenny was no match
for CJ on History, and when Laura took on Kevin [bad move, Kevin
never gets anything wrong] on Arts, it meant Tania was left to face
all five Eggheads in the deciding General Knowledge round.
She would surely have beaten them in a five-on-one squash challenge,
but was on a no-hoper in this format (which explains why when asked
what she would do with the money should she win, she said she'd keep
it all herself!).
So no £56,000 for the girls, but maybe host Dermot's pleas for
squash to be included in the Olympics will strike a chord somewhere
...
'These five people
are amongst the greatest quiz players in Britain. Together they make
up the Eggheads, arguably the most formidable quiz team in the
country.
The question is: can they be beaten?'
