Super Sobhy

World Juniors 2010

The World at her Feet
Glen Wilson talks to Amanda Sobhy ...

Still only 17, this young and gifted American has the world at her feet.

Amanda started playing the WISPA tour at 14 and has since risen to the world’s number 17th ranked player. Tearing up draws around the world and heading rapidly towards the world’s top 10, but it’s all about to come to a sudden halt.

In July of this year she will defend her World junior championship at Harvard University and try to help the USA dethrone the Egyptians from their dominance before starting a four year degree at Harvard University.

Asked how she’s enjoyed the past three years on the WISPA tour.

“I love it and I can’t wait to finish my degree and get back on it.”

Is she worried about her level dropping as she's been on this rapid rise to being an American superstar, especially with the world’s top 10 in her sights?

"I’m still going to play and train as much as I can. The college squash scene is pretty big and I have plenty of good players to train with so I’ll be busy.

"I still hope to play as many WISPA events as I can though I know I probably won’t be able to play as many as I have. The most important thing for me is to stay focused and to make sure my level doesn’t drop.

"I don’t care so much about my ranking but I have to keep improving all the time. There's some coaches in Boston who I will be working with so there’s plenty of people I know who can help me."

On the music front Amanda says she will be giving up the horn but still concentrating on singing while at Harvard.

"The first year I will take a bunch of different courses to see which direction I will go, but Maths is something I enjoy and will probably move towards."

When this young American finishes her Harvard degree she will still be only 22 years of age. With the players and coaching she has available to her in the Boston area I don’t think her levels going to drop but only improve.

There will be a lot of girls who will be glad to see the back of Amanda for a few years but when she starts her assault on the WISPA tour it’s going to be a new, stronger and improved Amanda Sobhy, with a Harvard Degree.

The World will be watching closely on the progress of Amanda Sobhy and what the future holds.

Best of luck Amanda ...
