Top seeds into Athens Finals
Tomorrow's finals day of the Greek
tomorrow will see the top seeds compete for both the men's and
women's titles after contrasting semi-final victories
Germany's top seeded Jens Schoor came through his match with
Alejandro Garbi in straight games, but in the all-Egyptian other
semi-final second seed Mazen Gamal only just squeezed home
against Basem Makram, 12/10 in the fifth!
In the ladies semis England's in-form Victoria Lust was too
strong for Olga Ertlova, while top seeded Italian Manuela Manetta
was taken to five by Sina Wall in a match that was a pleasure to
watch. |

Qualifying complete in Athens
Second day in Greek Open today with the last round of the
qualification draw.
Match
of the day was the match between the Egyptian Zahed Mohamed
against English Robert Downer. Downer is a very skilled
player with some great shots especially in his backhand.
Unfortunately they played each other for a place in the draw and
Zahed won 11/2 11/1 11/9.
In the other matches Alex Ingham with great touch was through
against Scottish Chris Ferguson 11/4 8/11 11/6 11/5 and also
Kevin Moran from Scotland gained a place in the draw.
Local Declan Christie lost to Swiss Lukas Burkhard but
were both through to the main draw just because Declan
was drawn for the lucky loser spot after Ahmed Hawas withdrew from
the main draw, as he was injured at his last tournament.
Tomorrow Sunday starting at 12.00 there are 8 men and 8 women
matches in two courts for the first round main draw. Favorites Jens
Schoor and Manuela Manetta start their Greek Open matches and also
locals Eliza Kargioti (plays Manetta), Zeta Tzamalouka (plays
Ertlova), Nicol Pozidi (plays Lust) and Declan Christie (plays
Jelinek).

Day One in Athens
First round qualification today in Athens squash club and some
interesting matches played. Star of the night was Egyptian Zahed
Mohamed who showed some of his unique skill and quickness by
demolishing Swiss Jonas Daehler 11/4 11/4 11/4. For sure we will see
much more from him.
The only local that was through to the second round was Declan
Christie who lives in Crete island, a paradise on earth. He passed
through Ali Muski from Lebanon 11/5 11/7 11/6. He faces Swiss Lukas
Burkhard for a place in the main
draw.
The rest of the locals didn't succeed as Greek champion Fabian
Kalaitzis lost to Austrian Stefan Bruneis at the most interesting
match of the day.
Local
hero Petros Tzamaloukas, playing at his home club, lost to Scottish
Chris Ferguson who didn't give anything away and applying pressure
until the last point.
Other locals, Moustroufis and Kargiotis were out 3/0.
Some interesting matches tomorrow for a place in the main
draw...British battle Ingham vs Ferguson...the hero of first day
Zahed...an Austrian (Brauneis) vs a Scottish (Moran) and local
Christie, the only local hope for a place at the main draw.
Also tomorrow two women's matches for two main draw places and all
four are locals, Zeta Tzamalouka vs Kontidi and Pozidi vs Mizan.
