Magdelena Open 2010
21-25 Apr, Castellón, Spain, $4k
Top seed Gamal wins in Castellón

Egypt's Mazen Gamal maintained his 100% record in PSA finals by beating home hero David Vidal in the climax of the Magdalena Open at Club Squash Peri Esport in Castellon, Spain.

After title triumphs in the FAJR International and Norooz International in Iran last year, the 24-year-old from Cairo marked the third final appearance of his career when he beat eighth-seeded Austrian Jakob Dirnberger in the Castellon semi-finals.

By contrast, 31-year-old Vidal, from Majorca, got the better of fellow Spaniard Alejandro Garbi Caro in the other semi in straight games.

But Gamal, the top seed, was too strong for second seed Vidal, winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 to claim his third Tour title.

All-Spanish semi in Castellón

The day started at 17:30 with the match between seeded number one, Mazel Gamal, and the Italian Andrea Torrecini. The Egyptian won 3/0.

The second match was disputed until the fifth game. The Austrian Jakob Dirnberger started winning the first game but the Italian Andrea Bianchetti led both following ones. The Austrian won the match ball of Bianchetti in the fourth, and then the definitive game.

An effective Alex Garbí played in the Peri Esport this evening to finish as soon as possible against the English Philip Nightingale. Three games were enough in order to play semifinals on Saturday for the Spanish.

Diego López didn’t play his match against David Vidal because his leg was injured yesterday during the first round.

Jakob: “….OH MY GOD! What a match! I started ok, moving well and winning the first game. In the second and third I wasn’t focused on the game and thinking about other things like slippy court….The fourth game was open and I won the game. Also Andrea lost concentration and so I can manage to win the fifth! So, in the end I was very happy to win, without playing my best squash. It is my first semifinal in a PSA event and I am looking forward to playing Mazen tomorrow”.

Gamal: “I’m very happy today. I played better than yesterday, I feel I can getting in the mood every match I hope I can play good tomorrow as well. I need to thank Garbí & Vidal and the people here for the tournament we are really enjoying everything here and they are very helpful. Torricini is a very experienced player and he played very well. I really enjoyed the match”.

Under way in Castellón

In spite of the adjustments of schedules that had to be applied in the beginning of the PSA Magdalena, due to the air problems provoked by the Icelandic volcano, the first round of the main draw was completed today in the Peri Esport's courts.

After the qualifying round played in one day at the UJI’s courts, the main draw started at 13:30h with five Spanish playing in this round, three of them from Castellón.

Diego Lopez, after a tight match overcame Austrian Stefan Brauneis 3/2. Eduardo Gonzalez, from Tenerife, lost 1/3 against number one seed, the Egyptian Mazen Gamal. For his part, Alex Garbí, principal local player, won 3/0 against Javier Castillo, also from Castellón. And Andrea Bianchetti beat Loren Sánchez 3/0.
