Millicent Open 2010
Corren's home win as sweet as any
Andrew Dent reports

Mike Corren won his 30th professional squash title and one of his sweetest when he beat Nathan Stevenson to claim the Millicent Open in his home town of Millicent, South Australia on Sunday.

The 36-year-old Corren beat Stevenson in straight games 11-7, 11-4, 11-9 on the courts where he learned the game.

“It was really strange – everywhere I went I bumped into people that I hadn’t seen in 20 years,” Corren said.

“So when I should have been practising or warming up, I was chatting to people.”

Corren and fellow local Ben Werchon ran some coaching clinics while they were in Millicent and Corren said he tried to send out a positive message.

“I just want people to know that even though they may come from a small town, they can still get out and see the world playing a sport they love,” he said.

“I hope I inspired some of them.”

The Millicent Open was the first professional squash tournament to be held in the town and was the brainchild of Corren and Squash SA marketing manager Jane Intini.

Squash SA put up some of the prize money and local sponsors came on board, including the Kimberley Clark Millicent paper mill.

Such was the success that the organisers are confident of holding another Open next year.
