Borja reclaims home title
To the delight of a packed
home crowd in Santiago, home favourite Borja Golan
recaptured the Trofeo Camimo de Santiago title, beating
defending champion Adrian Grant in a lengthy four
game battle in the Spanish number one's home town.
Having won the event in 2008 Golan made early exits in the
last two injury-troubled years, while Grant finished runner
up in 2009 before winning last year's event.
Coufal claims maiden title in
Santiago
Austria's
Birgit Coufal claimed her maiden WISPA title after
beating Lisa Aitken in the final of the Trofeo Camino
de Santiago in Spain.
Having taken out top seed Alexandra Norman in the
semi-finals Coufal, the fifth seeded world #88, scored a
second successive upset as she beat Scottish number one
Aitken, the third seed ranked #68 in three close games to
take the top prize.
The pair's only previous meeting had also been in Santiago,
Coufal winning their first round encounter in 2009, and both
were playing their first WISPA Final.

Semis:
Golan and Grant to contest
Santiago final
Top seed Adrian Grant will face local favourite
Borja Golan in the final of the Trofeo Camino de
Santiago in Spain, after both recovered from losing the
opening game to beat Greg Marche and Ollie Pett in four
games in the semi-finals.
The women's final will be between Scotland's Lisa Aitken,
who beat second seed Siyoli Waters for the first time in
three attempts, and Austrian Birgit Coufal, the fifth
seed who recorded an upset win over Canadian top seed
Alexandra Norman.
20-Oct,
Quarters:
Grant squeezes through but
Coppinger falls in Santiago
Top seed Adrian Grant had to come from 2-1 down to beat New
Zealand's Campbell Grayson in the quarter-finals of Trofeo
Camino De Santiago, but second seed Steve Coppinger was
unable to build on taking the first game against English
qualifier Ollie Pett as the South African fell 18/16 in the
fourth.
Grant will meet young Frenchman Greg Marche, who came from a
game down to beat Czech champion Jan Koukal, while Pett
meets local favourite Borja Golan, the third seed who won
his all-Spanish match against Carlos Cortes in straight
games.
All the seeded players triumphed in the women's
quarter-finals where Alexandra Norman meets Birgit Coufal
and Siyoli Waters faces Lisa Aitken for places in Saturday's
final.
19-Oct, Round One:
Golan and Cornes guarantee
home interest in Santiago semis
While the home fans fully expected third seed Borja Golan
to progress well into the tournament being hosted in his
home town, the prospect of seeing him play Carlos Cornes
for a place in the semi-finals will be an unexpected bonus.
Golan beat English qualifier Joe Lee in straight games while
Cornes, the world #174, pulled off a significant upset in
beating Hungary's Mark Krajcsak in five games.
Top seeds Adrian Grant and Steve Coppinger
progressed without undue worries, although Grant dropped a
game to Stephane Galifi while Coppinger raced past qualifier
Fabien Verseille in just 12 minutes!
The French have something to celebrate however in Greg
Marche's five-game defeat of fourth seed Chris Simpson.
Marche now meets Czech star Jan Koukal in the quarters.
Further unexpected success came the way of English qualifier
Olly Pett who beat compatriot Adrian Waller 3/1 to
set up a meeting with Coppinger. Grant faces New Zealand's
Campbell Grayson who recorded a fine win over Mathieu
Castagnet, ranked 11 places higher than the Kiwi at #50. |
