Roundup from Scottish Squash

The Scottish Junior Open concluded today with some fantastic final round matches finishing off the tournament.

The Boys U11 saw Youssef Abou-Seada (EGY) come top of the group, only dropping games to the eventual 3rd placed finisher R.A. Charaniyaselvan (IND). Aditya Raghavan (IND) managed to edge past his fellow countryman on 4 games to clinch 2nd spot.

In the Girls U11 the top seeded Egyptian’s were dominant; eventual winner Habiba Mohammed (EGY), and runner-up Perein Abou-Seada (EGY) proved too strong for all opposition; neither dropping a game on the way to their final, with Habiba defeating Perein in the final 11/4, 11/8, 11/4. Vedika Arun (IND) finished in 3rd place.

In the Boys U13 rising star Mohammed Alsaraj (JOR) showed some excellent promise, clinching 3rd spot defeating Carter Robertaille (CAN) in 4 thrilling games. Late withdrawals of the top 2 seeds in the Girls U13 meant that for the remaining competitors there was everything to play for. Carrie Hallam (SCO) fought well but lost out Julie Rossignol (FRA) in 3 games 11/7, 11/8, 11/7; Julie clinching second place. Zoe Foo Yuk Han proved too strong for the rest of the competition dropping very few points on her way to the title.

The Boys U15 saw the most hotly contested matches as the competitors played out for first second and third places. Unseeded Michael Thomson (CAN) squeezed past his opponent, seventh seed Tomokato Endo (JPN) to take third spot 9/11, 11/7, 11/7, 9/11, 11/6. In a thrilling final between the No 1 and No 2 seeds that went to 5 games Ahmad Alsaraj (JOR) (No 1 seed) came from behind to defeat the talented No 2 seed Dylan Murray (USA) 8/11, 11/5, 8/11, 11/5, 11/8.

The Girls U15 final guaranteed a Scottish Winner, with Kirsty Lobban (SCO), the No 1 seed, and Claire Gadsby (SCO), the No 3 seed making the final. In the end Kirsty proved too strong for Claire winning in straight games 11/4, 11/2, 11/3. Railynn Dane (CAN) defeated Elspeth Young (SCO) 3-1 to take 3rd place.

In the Boys U17 Fadi Tharwat (EGY) defeated Jan van den Herrewege to take 3rd place 11/7, 13/11, 11/7. The final between No 1 seed Tyler Osborne (CAN), and Abhishek Pradhan (IND) saw some excellent squash with superb rallies and brilliant from the start. The match went to 5 games with Abhishek sneaking through to victory by the narrowest of margins 11/7, 6/11, 11/6, 10/12, 11/8.

The Girls U17 saw the talented Tamika Saxby (AUS) ease to victory not dropping a game in the whol tournament – eventually defeating Michelle Gemmel (CAN) in the final 11/9, 11/6, 11/1. Anikita Sharma (IND) defeated Michelle’s fellow Canadian Nicole Bunyan (CAN) 3-0 to take 3rd place.

The Boys U19 3rd place play off saw Guilherme Farnezi De Melo (BRA) defeat Paul Coll (NZL) 7/11, 11/6, 14/12, 11/2. In the final Andrew Schnell (CAN) looked highly impressive. In an extremely high tempo match Schnell managed to keep the tempo high enough to put his opponent Julian Kirby (USA) under pressure to force errors – Schnell eventually winning 11/7, 11/3, 11/7.

In the Girls U19 Mhairi Charlton (SCO) battled hard but could only manage a 3rd place finish as both Laura Gemmell (CAN), and Samantha Cornett (CAN) proved too strong. The final match between Samantha and Laura saw Laura coming out on top defeating Samantha 15/13, 11/8, 11/5.
